I saw it on Toms here:
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/g.skill-overclocking-record-computex-2019,39595.html

Am I the only one that has rolled my eyes at these types of overclocking records basically since the existence of overclocking? I remember sitting on my computer browsing some tech sites when I was around 15 years old and I read something similar... at first I was like "Damn! Cant believe they got that high!"... and then you open it up and see this gigantic apparatus filled with liquid nitrogen and then the article talks about how bad ass these professional overclockers are. So... you are telling me no normal person with cherry picked componenets and an unlimited budget to cool their processor (liquid nitrogen) couldnt achieve something very very similar (if not the same/better)?

I expect to open up articles like that sometimes and read stuff like, "Kyle Bennet, the professional overclocker, has reverse engineered the bios to basically give unlimited tinkering options to himself. Using his custom coded bios settings, he was able to achieve an additonal 1ghz over the previous overclocking record while using nothing but off the shelf watercooling components. When asked about his accomplishment, Kyle was quoted as saying, "I'm the best there is, plain and simple. I mean, I wake up in the morning and I piss excellence."

Yes the records are neat, but meh.

I see it the same as going to the drag strip and watching the jet powered dragsters. Neat to watch, but know there's zero practical attainability and use.

Those "competitions" have always been pointless and irrelevant to real-world overclocking.

"BonerCorpseFart was able to boot into Windows for 3 picoseconds with only a single core enabled at 6.8ghz and 4.5v. He wins because he...altered the exact the same settings as everyone else but his silicon was slightly better?
" It's like a circle-jerk with commentary.

it takes some skill i figure lol. if u were noob and went head 2 head /w kingpin with same silicon and setup u probably would loose??

Why is everyone hating? It's all in good fun. I got into the pc enthusiast circle on extreme overclocking forums, before getting permabanned for making a thread calling out the site admin and owner as a tool. That's when I joined hardforum. Probably not a coincidence eocf went to shit since I left either. But! I didn't even know what overclocking was before that, and it took me down the path of wasting many hours figuring it out, killing some hardware, but overall I look back and love that time! Stop hating just because we don't need 6ghz dimms.

I wonder what sort of timings these are running at to score that sort of oc. Either way massive result ,
I think when I first got into pcs the speed was about 133mhz ah good times (y)

my "first" was way back with the single digits of Mhz and 10mb HDD and such (yes very early on, and did not "own" them specifically, but used and abused in some cases nonetheless ^.^

AM386DX2 (used till the system up and "dead"
Cyrix 2.3Mhz something or other
Intel many variants (of course)
a few Via as well as a few Nvidia based mobo (offered what others did not at the time, allowed me to play Oblivion maxed out on just the 6150LE built into the one AM2 board I had..

great times, lots of dust and zapped components...I wonder what happened to all them hard drives o_O

SMH. The inmates have taken over the asylum.

It's time, folks. Time to rename the place to (S)oftforum officially. I'll start the paperwork.

My old 8088 XT had the illustrious Turbo botton...took it from 4.77 MHz to a smokin' fast 8 MHz! Karateka and Prince of Persia ran great - good times!

You got that backwards. The turbo button actually slowed your 8mhz CPU down to 4.77Mhz for compatibility with poorly programmed software :p... That button fooled a generation!

And yeah. Extreme overclocking is awesome. It takes a lot of patience, know how, and hard work along with silicon lotto to stand up with guys like kingpin. Anybody who has actually done a few OC sessions beyond water (dry ice or ln2) gains a respect for the hobby.

I do however like seeing the OC have to at least be stable enough to last a few minutes -- as in GPU extreme OC having to make it through firestrike. That turns it into an extremely difficult dance of heating and freezing the CPU and GPU based on the load. Too cold at idle and byebye, too hot at load and byebye..

Default was 4.77 MHz with turbo off, so "legacy" programs would run just like they did on the previous gen CPUs.
The turbo was there to take advantage of higher speeds with programs that could utilize it.

Not trying to derail the thread with argument, people did build computers with "turbo off" to drop the CPU, but the point of the button was to limit the CPU. You were hitting a button to drop your default 8mhz CPU down to 4.77. The turbo didn't OC the chip.

I still play with and program these machines all the time, hence my user name.

edit: though it seems we're saying the same thing in reverse. Either way it's an 8mhz chip being slowed down, whether turbo was on or off is irrelevant, that varied.

Just like people saying serious drag racing is easy, it's not easy though, it takes lot of real world testing, researching and experience to do it. I held an air cooled 24hr torture test stable WR for a while with the Opteron 165 (that's more like the realistic OC people are talking about), it took two weeks of hard work to get there. I nearly cried a little when that BIOS version corrupted itself due to a bug in that particular version. Damn DFI.

Only 'advantage' I had over your average Joe overclocker was a hand picked CPU stepping, due to a friendly local computer store who was still quite new, got to know them well and it was a known 2nd best stepping. That paid off. But again, stuff like that takes time. There were no silliconlottery folks back then, just places like this. Forums/bulletin boards have changed quite a bit since those times.

For me air/water long term OC records are like NA long term endurance engine building - more relevant and possible for the normal overclocker. Forced induction equivalent is the short term OC record and TEC/LN2/chilled water cooling realm. Both take time and have different goals. Personally I like long term OCs and got as high as possible with reliability and left it there, which was a beginner mistake as it did degrade slightly over time so was a bit too hot for a truly long term OC - maybe IMC, who knows. Backing off 50-100MHz would have been best.

End of the day, different strokes for different folks.

edit to add, that's why I'm super stoked for Zen2 and can't wait to play that game all over again - new design to play with and optimise, reminds me of the A64/Oppy of old as it changes the layout of CPU design again. Which means people will have much more unknowns and much more learning while tweaking to eek out every last bit of performance.
