Not so fine wine: Radeon VII vs RTX 2080

R VII is not going to be discontinued. My son used a 7970 to play Fortnite and BF 1. It performed surprisingly well. He moved onto a Fury X which is about 10 % faster with the memory tweak. V64 and now a Radeon VII.
The 50th anniversary edition is going to match my black red rig really well.... :D :and no, it does not have to outperform 2080 Ti

memory tweak? something i don't know? (fury-x/ oc'ed 290x 8gb is about 2x 7970)

it has around 1 year life left before next high end GPU takes its place in amd portfolio. + its part of enterprise hardware so updates are likely for couple years at least on pro drivers. It seems it will also be the last true GCN high-end gpu, so its unlikely we'll get any updates after that - unless its something that the linux team finds and fixes.

If their next consumer part is as fast for games, they might as well just use the dies as Instinct cards instead and get better margins on them.

Tha makes no sense. Navi could be 50%+ faster in games but slower in everything in the professional market...You know, kind of like what Nvidia did?


Maxwell gave then the performance jump it did because they completely cut FP64 (while AMD'S 2013 era 290 still does quite well especially considering their cost) and nerfed FP32 as well as Kepler. They did it so they chould charge a ton money for Quattro and even more for Tesla. It was a great business move but the consumer got less for their money, considering the entire GPU use field (gaming, rendering etc)..

and that's the big problem with AMD, they need a market segmentation, most gamers simply doesn't care a crap about compute performance or the profesional market, they just want great performance in games, with quiet, eficient, cool runing GPUs.... and that's how things should be... if we imagine NAVI being compute performance crippled but with more gaming performance it would be a way more succesful GPU and better for AMD financials which is exactly what most of us want..

Yeah I'd like to know what you're talking about on the memory Tweak. And Fury X is WAY faster than 7970. It's actually almost equal to Vega 64 when Vega is is clocked at Fury X speeds.
 
I would personally love to own a Radeon VII. :) That said, I already have an RX570, RX580 and Vega 56. AMD is seriously coming back but, it is going to take some time. Heck, is is barely over 2 years since the release of Ryzen but Intel fans still think AMD is dead, dying or think that AMD needs to do something immediately. :D

Have enough market speak there? Gamers do not pick up a GPU and wonder in their mind if it is quiet, efficient and cool, they just want something that works well and that they can afford.

So why do reviews, including the reviews this very website did, have sections on noise, thermals and power consumption if no one cares?

Price and performance are the primary factors for me, but I still pay attention to the others. If price/performance are comparable, why wouldn't I want a card thats quieter? Why wouldn't I want a card thats cooler and therefore less likely to throttle? Why wouldn't I want a card that uses less power and therefore dumps less heat into my case, impacting the temp of my CPU, etc?

Just because you don't care about them doesn't mean that another, more sensible person, shouldn't care about them either. Even if they not be as important as price/performance for most people.

In general, reviews are cool and all but, most do not go online to Newegg or Microcenter and dwell on that market speak, they just want to spend as little as possible and get as much as possible out of the card.

Noise is measurable, temperatures are measurable, power efficiency is measurable. It's not just "marketing speak", they are all things that people can and do pay attention to and use as factors in their purchasing decision. Hence why you'll struggle to find a GPU review that doesn't look at all or some of those factors. These aren't ephemeral factors like a car advert talking about how stylish, dynamic or inspiring it is. These are quantifiable features that can (in the case of temps and power) directly affect a card's performance. Some people might only look at price/performance. A sensible person will look at more than just that, as they realise those factors affect how much they can get out of the card.

It boggles my mind that someone is posting on a tech forum about how power, temps and noise are marketing speak. The next time I go to a car dealership and a sales person starts talking about a vehicle's fuel efficiency or horsepower I'll make sure to tell them it's just marketing speak and that those things aren't important to anyone.
