Octopath Traveler

While I own a Switch copy (and it has been getting more playable on the awesome Yuzu emulator), I have long sought to see Octopath Traveler come to PC. In fact, I can't really imagine why it didn't, given Square Enix's seeming interest in the platform and the fact it was built on a very PC friendly engine. Thus, this is great news.

However, I can only hope that A) there are technical/graphical improvements suitable for PC play and B) They do not make the previous SE mistake of porting things to iOS/Android mobile first and then making a halfass port to PC. Now granted I'd rather have that compared to nothing at all, but if you compare some of the "retro" Square Enix RPGs (ie Final Fantasy III, IV, V, VI, Romancing SaGA etc..) that came to PC, they had a lot of issues thanks to being discount-level Mobile ports first of all.

Octopath Traveler is a great homage to the truly old school JRPG and has some neat mechanics too. While I've not made it to the end of the game, many reviewers seem to agree that the main thing that keeps it from being a true masterpiece is the lack of changing interactions depending on who you have in your party. That is to say, the game is designed so you can go through picking up each of the characters in any order from first to last, and engaging in their stories. Thus, the "other characters" you've already picked up as part of the party typically have nothing to do, say, or input on the current goings on, outside of battle. I know its probably too much to ask, but I'd love to see a Octopath Traveler Masterpiece Edition or whatever patched in to add additional content and balance (to consoles as well as PC), something like the International Zodiac Job Edition of Final Fantasy XII , Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions, or the 3D Remake (available on PC!) of Final Fantasy IV!

In any event, bringing Octopath Traveler to PC will be a big success if they can do so properly and price it reasonably.

i have a switch and i really want this on pc just so i can pay less than 79.99$ CAN for a 2d rpg.

This is the closest thing to Final Fantasy 3 as your going to get I don't own a switch but this game looks really interesting. I was was in my early 20s when I had copy of final fantasy 3 and played it drunk.

I will be paying VERY close attention to this. It's like a Zelda game and Nintendo consoles.. No way I'm buying a new console every time a new Zelda comes out. The same thing rings true for cool Jrpg's and your xbox/ps consoles. we don't get to see alot of this stuff on pc, unless by other.. unscrupulous means. This coming to pc is a dream come true. Wish more devs could do this. Hopefully it's not a shit-ass iPhone port.

I'm gonna sound off again. I honestly wasn't impressed with the game play. I played the demo on Switch, expecting Chrono Trigger 2.0, and it just didn't do it for me. It seemed very monotonous and boring, and I guess I never "fell" for any of the characters. The graphics engine and such are superb though, I did love the look, feel, and sound of it. It looks prime for a Chrono Trigger re-master/sequel.

Easily the most over-rated game in recent memory.

Yeah, it was pretty solid, but not only was the gameplay itself a throwback to the 16 bit days, the writing was, too. Just JRPG trope after JRPG trope. Totally boring.

$60 is a bit steep (currently $50 for Switch at Best Buy). I'd wait for a sale in the coming months. it's a fantastic game, but it's hardly one of the best if you're looking for a very in-depth story. Each character sort of has their own goals and purpose, but they all seem to really just jump all over the place and scratch the surface.

I'm honestly surprised that the recommended calls for the specs. that it does. The game looks great, but really, barring the impressive background, it's a SNES-style game at best. I'm not sure I'd even notice the 60 FPS over the standard 30 FPS on the Switch.

I loved this game it's probably one of my favorite games I've played the last few years. My only gripe is the lack of interaction/story between characters but other than that the combat and graphics were great. I guess this also could be considered a gripe but as much as I love the game I don't think it's worth $60.

The recommended lists a 4-year old low-range Intel processor, a 2-year old low-range AMD processor, and two 3-year old mid-range video cards. Hardly demanding by an metric.

Definitely not demanding but looking at what the game looks like, a 1060, or even 6GB of VRAM seems a bit much at first glance. Then again, I'm not sure how it was optimized to begin with. I mean hell, the game is 5GB! Just sayin'.

Windows doesn't stop using memory when a game is running, and I don't think there is any modern video card that fit their performance profile for recommended that has less than 4GB of VRAM.

I guess we'll see how it runs on the worst of the worst systems, I'm betting it'll be difficult to notice overall. If you're planning on buying, I'd be curious to know what 4K looks and what it's utilizing for resources (consequently, lower end settings).

that's typical for the era it's trying to emulate

Yes. This is definitely a major design decision for those who remember NES/SNES era JRPGs. I can remember how in Final Fantasy IV (aka FF2 US) there is a character who, when he is a boss has a large, imposing sprite standing armored 15 feet tall with his arms crossed. However, much later in the game when he's acting as a "good guy" (though it is an auto battle out of the players' control), his character on the "player" side of the screen is a little tiny chibi-style sprite, facing off against a massive boss creature.

Also, as of today May 16 Octopath Traveler is available to purchase via Steam!

Unfortunately.. it is for $60. I really wish they would not have made such a decision due to the time since original release. I'd be happy to buy the game for PC, but $60 at launch after this delay? Unless there are significant improvements I can't see it getting as many sales as they hope. If they priced it at $30ish they'd have a ton of sales! Let keep in mind that a great many titles that were first on consoles from the Yakuza series (0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2), to Disgaea 5, Valkyria Chroicles, and many others were discounted on PC in deference to the wait and also included all DLC and upgrades.

I wonder how much of this is Nintendo throwing their weight around trying to keep prices high. From what some say they have some control over the title so that's disappointing indeed. Maybe if I can find it on GMG for 25% off I'll buy at release. Right now I see at least a 15% discount so that's something but still...

That situation is replicated in ALL the FFs of the NES/SNES era, in a few of them more than once! Characters on the map, and your characters in combat, have chibi sprites but the enemies are well drawn sprites. The most extreme example is Kefka in FF3 US (FFVI Japan) who is a chibi clown with a goofy laugh on the map, cut scenes (which were done with map sprites back then), and more than a few fights. Only to be turned into this massive detailed three stage boss with multiple details culminating in a fallen angel (Satan IIRC in some versions) at the end.

As for the $60 is Square Enix, they don't release cheap and they take a while before they cut prices on stuff like this. They can also demand the price. Also while SOME of those games you listed were discounted the release came years, or even a GENERATION after their release. This isn't that far out, full price or bust for a long time is pretty normal for this level of thing from this level of a dev.

This game should run on the same AthlonXP/4Gb/2Gb system I threw in the dumpster 10 years ago. Because I played plenty of games like it on a SNES emulator on the same system. It ain't THAT pretty.

The system requirements are probably overkill for more of the hidden things, not just CPU power. Like a minimum directx spec, they don't have to worry about legacy drivers, etc. It's modern. Who wants to help support hardware older than that ya know?

This looked ok, and I want to play it, really, I do. But this won't run on my older laptop and definately not for $60. Meh.

I don't know about that. There are tons of SE published titles (including those like Shadow of the Tomb Raider) that were heavily discounted shortly after launch and sometimes even before/at. However, the closest parallel I can think of of is Dragon Quest XI which, came out after Octopath Traveler originally and released on PC concurrently with XBOne/PS4 consoles. Pre-launch I can recall there being 20%ish discounts and in the year since it has been available for 50%+ discount during various sales and on reputable keysites. There are other titles too like the Final Fantasy XV PC client and the XII and XIII series, which had HD remasters come to PC but admittedly those were older games. Dragon Quest is the "prime" title of the "Enix" half of Square Enix however, so I think it stands. This is not to say that many of these titles don't "normally" keep the price high for awhile, but pre/at launch and shortly after there are significant discounts and sales. Not to mention of course that games like DQ11 didn't "lag" a year before coming to the PC, either (though I am wondering if the S version improvements will make it to PC considering they are hefty - if they don't it will be very disappointing as its basically an Enhanced Edition).

Between the delayed release of a year , the 2D retro gameplay (which may or may not be fair but in the minds of many it is an issue), lack of any changes to the game itself (as opposed to if they added content) and other factors I think they'd be better off with a lower price of $30-40 for maximum sales. I really want to support the title and I'm glad its coming to PC, but I worry that at this price they won't get as many sales as they'd like and then look unkindly on PC. Hopefully there will be enough sites that can give the game a major discount pre/at launch and certainly more post launch/on sale, but I think they'd overall get far more profit marketing it at $30-40., especially soon after release.

I don't really see the problem with it being $60 for an initial release, it's still $50 for the switch. Hell Skyrim is $50 for the switch.

I won't buy it at $60 myself but I'm sure it'll eventually go on sale and i've got tons of other games to play in the meantime.

I do, however, wish it was mac-able.

I mean, it's a Japanese centric game on the PC, anything is good really. And we can always wait.

Reminds me of Final Fantasy Tactics....I'd give it a go if the price were right.

Just reminding everyone that anyone who wants to buy it on/near release tomorrow, June 7th, GreenManGaming is offering it for around $45 , which I consider a more acceptable price given the delay.

While I've considered waiting until there's a really significant deal (ie $25 ish), but I'm split because this is probably one of the titles we want to be sure that SE knows there's a market for PC gaming. The game was Switch exclusive and hopefully we get a good port, so if we do its important to show we're interested in buying lest they (and potentially other Japanese companies) think that PC gaming isn't worthwhile for ALL their titles, leaving some of them on console etc.

Waiting to hear about the port quality, then I'm in. It's just really expensive IMO.

I see the reviews are doing pretty well thus far, anyone on [H] pick it up yet?

I really enjoyed the game on the Switch. But I played it to death, thus don't really see any reason to double dip here.

So I played for the last couple hours straight - I gotta say, I feel stupid for ignoring this game until now but I didn't have a Switch and didn't feel like investing in the console up until this point. The game looks and runs great for what it is, and I'm playing on a TV in 4k - very happy with it thus far, being a huge old school JRPG fan.
