Warning = Bitcoin in coming ..

It hasn't made sense to mine BTC (or most mainstream "alt-coins") for a while on video cards. Sure, you might get some fringe alts that are caught up in crypto-mania that can be profitable to mine on video cards, but I don't think you'd see a serious run on video cards until BTC is $15k and ETH is $900+.

If you're looking to get into Crypto, better to drop your $800 and buy it vs buying a Radeon VII to mine with (for example).

A couple of my friends are starting to whisper about bit coins and some other coins. I'm a little worried because this is now the THIRD time I'm hearing the same things, and once again it's falling into my planned upgrade period (within the next year). Everybody says the coin is dead but then suddenly everybody is mortgaging their cat and buying GPUs.

In early 2014 I had to spend like $600 to get my 290. In early 2018 I was lucky to have a friend sell me a vega 64 for $500 (was never happy with that card though). I'm waiting for Navi or possibly up to a year if nvidia has something in the pipeline.. I REALLY hope GPU prices don't go nuts on me AGAIN

I feel your pain. I had to build a rig with 1070 during the craze. $430 for the card. RAM was really expensive too. I knew a lot of people who jumped onto the coin craze, and every single one of them lost money. I guess you really have to be dedicated to turn a good profit doing it, and even then it's a risk.

Just like the Old West Goldrush, it's not the miners that got rich. It was the people who sold them their equipment.

You dont really have to worry about bitcoin since using a GPU isn't worth it. You have to worry about the explosion of shitcoin that people come up with that leverage GPU. The kind of coin that you hear people saying "I get 235599 shitcoins a day with my 4 rx480's, they are only worth 0.000007 cents each but with the way things are going they will be worth 0.0003 cents each by end of the year. I'll cash out and retire early". I don't know how many of these popped up 2 winters ago when Bitcoin reached its max and GPU prices and availability were garbage.

heh good idea. I don't know about bitcoin markets and don't really have the time to invest in any more ...speculative investments... GPUs are being dumped by the truckload on ebay, picking those up to dump back on their heads when prices go up could be serious profit though.

I have a feeling that may end up being navi GPUs though.. just what my gut says since I'm waiting for navi.

Cards to horde, 1660Ti and the 470's. AMD upcoming cards should fair well but too early to tell. Depending upon what prices do in the longer run, the older cards such as the 1070's, 1080Ti's may still be worthwhile. I am currently making a profit with two 1080Ti's, not the kinda of profit where it would be worth it to buy a used card or new but those with cards can make some small amounts of profit. Even if you had free electricity and 6 1080Ti's your still talking less than $10/day presently but that is going up.

AMD card has been sound investment if one wanted to resell and most of the time with profit as my ref 290 = Hot = was sold for mining at enough profit I bought a R 280 for free with a game and I still have the card and game and box .

I'll hop on the roller coaster again to the tune of $20. I tripled my money last time. If I loose whatever, a 20 bet and a little skin in the game to make these stories actually interesting.

im currently at 2x with matic. stop trailing just in case

Would people really want to roast a 1080Ti for an extra $25 a month though? it would take almost 2 years to cover the cost of a used 1080 Ti. I wouldn't count on the card lasting much longer than that folding@home if I already picked it up used..

I do understand they would invest that $25/month into something that may pay out, but I guess it just makes more sense to me to just invest $25 a month. I wouldn't know though, the real stock market stresses me out enough.

Right now I still see GPU prices in free fall. I have a Titan X maxwell coming to tide me over still would like a major upgrade within the next year.

I guess since it's under warranty I don't really mind, plus it's not roasting, stays at about 60 deg with fan at about 60% :)

wow.. Vega 64 I bought which is much slower sounds like a jet taking off to keep it under 80C.. but it was like 1/3 the cost of a 1080Ti at the time (got a super good used deal from a friend during the last bitcoin GPU boom). I do folding@home with it undervolted and it hasn't died yet, so I guess you should be fine.

Thanks! New case incoming...

Glad to be of service!

Anything the RTX cards excel at using its hardware?
Putting those specialty cores to work. They aren't doing much with RT at the moment ;)

We're back.

Edit:

So which GPUs should we horde right now to sell to the uninformed noob miners at highly inflated prices? -- asking for a friend...

I'm seeing RX580 8GB cards on ebay for like 125. Prev crush had those cards for ~400+.

Fleabay 1070s for ~225. Those cards will be 500+ soon enough.

Keep in mind , mine is in an open air case and is a Strix card, so massive 3 fan setup

I have not used nicehash ever ,been mining for years to get free video cards which works great.

Digital Viper-X- I read your post here ,so I thought I try out nicehash on RTX2080 and I am getting some crazy stupid numbers .Of course it varies but I am seeing upto $2.50 USD a day seems kinda high but I will take it.Avg seems to say around $1.65 USD-$1.75 USD for the last couple hours.
I have not seen any numbers that high since about 1 1/2 years on GTX 1080TI's doing zec coin. Now I feel stupid I have not tried nicehash in the past.

Good stuff, I might need to upgrade now :)

I still have not run a full 24 hrs on nicehash yet to get a a better idea if those numbers are even close to correct.
It is looking like it going to be around $1.50 USD after power cost for 24Hrs.
I am happy with that ,depending on which algorithm running ranges from $1.30 USD-$2.50USD .

those of us renting with power included? (motels) could i make money with a couple of cards? (AMD)

Depends what bitcoin does. If it drops you’ll have issues.

Right now it’s $2.10 for a Radeon VII and $2.15 for a 2080ti on Nicehash, per day. That’s a long ROI...

Everything scales as the bottom feeders are the real winners as people are still running very old hardware and going from a HD6950 to an RX 570 8Gb makes them a little more modern .

Nice hash is typically higher returns than anywhere else from what I’ve found. I’ve done direct mining and several different managed miners. Nicehash beats all I’ve tried.

It is looking good running nicehash and getting some good numbers..

What do those of you who are active into coin mining think about GPU prices in the near future though? I hear prices of all the coins are going up still. Starting to wonder if I should panic buy a 2080 before I get shut out for another 16 months again.

I am wondering the same thing. The alt coins will rise again if Bitcoin goes bananas, but not as high as last time. Still a card like the Radeon VII is going for $700 now. Expect it to go for north of $1000 used if mining takes off again.
