Win7 EOL Jan 2020!!! really??

I keep telling my customers that the decision to stay on Windows 7 is theirs and theirs alone to make. I mention it maybe 4 or 5 times and then stop mentioning it, it's useless at that point if they don't make up their minds or think about it. I will try not to pull a told-you-so down the line on them either. :D

they will still blame you anyway, when trouble comes

Or office. Or autodesk stuff like Maya or 3ds Max. Or many games.

Only fools run MS office. If that is what your talking about... regardless Office 365 runs fine on Linux as its cloud based and MS go to sales sku for office. Google docs doesn't much care what OS your on either... and Libre is every bit MS offices equal if you need offline.

Maya has full Linux support. When it comes to VFX work maya is the go to in terms of autodesk software. I hear some people use 3ds max but I don't see it around much. It seems at least anyone doing video and animation uses maya if they use autodesk anyway.

There are plenty of big projects that use maya and things like their arnold render sure... but all the bigs run them almost entirely on Linux. Moves like the latest blade runner and the like where done on Linux workstations and render farms.

I won't bother linking the Autodesk downloads for Maya and tools like arnold... but ya they fully support Linux, and its the go to OS for those tools in the big houses.

Maya has been around along time.. but ime houdine seems to be outpacing maya and might even be on par install wise with maya these days. Houdine likewise fully supports Linux and every VFX house I have seen is using Linux almost all the way through their pipes. You may see a few windows workstations on animators desks but all the heavy lifting rendering is done on Linux.

https://www.sidefx.com/Support/system-requirements/
Perhaps the game studios that use houdini are more inclined to be windows based setups... but anyway point is software runs on Linux, and runs better.

As for games... ya not much issue there these days. Very little that can't be run under Linux... the few major issue games at this point are the ones heavy with the worst of the worst DRM.

You can still switch your update branch to the current branch for business on pro version. It gives you 3 extra month until you get latest feature update. Still annoying cause you used to have an entire year with the defer option.

I guess on plus side Windows 10 does have more efficient spectre mitigation patches which could restore 10-20% performance. Maybe Microsoft is messing up Windows 7 on purpose but windows 10 has also been more reliable with group policy software installs

everyone just loves Windows 10 enhanced telemetry
Turn it to Basic Mode and it's fine, even the European Union and its GDPR (which is one of the strongest privacy laws on the books anywhere in the world) say it's fine. If the EU and the GDPR says it fine, who am I to argue?

In the past this wasn't an issue for the consumer. PCs became obsolete on the hardware level forcing an upgrade which upgraded the OS at the same time. I've been rocking my home brew rig for 9 years. It was my main gaming rig, with a graphics card update 5 years ago until the last year. It would struggle with latest games @ high quality but I've a backlog of games that are older that look judy as good that run fine. Long story short Microsoft is asking for upgrades outside the hardware cycle. The public is just not use to that. Whether it was 'free' or not.

Lol. No the EU and GDPR don't say "basic mode is fine" -- where are you coming up with this?

MS collects THOUSANDS of datapoints in that mode.

Well, my IT department has been trying to do an in-place upgrade of my machine for the last month, and it keeps hanging on the same error. It's a recent Skylake system, so it should have zero compatibility issues.

Don't these idiots have feedback on their side detailing failed upgrades? It's astounding to me that they just keep trying the same thing every night, and somehow think it will change.

And I got tired of this and decided to record the error code starting Monday...it's taking forever to time-out and showing me no error code, so I haven't been able to record it and send it in manually every night I've tried this week.

This is the reason why we will still be stuck on Windows 7 in 2020. I guess I need to stay until like 8:30 tonight so I can actually catch the error code, as the app only displays it for five fucking minutes before it auto-closes. Thanks IT.
No they fired them all

That's a really good point which I'd never considered before. I too have a really old gaming rig. Since building it about 7 years ago I have installed a new ssd, gpu, and doubled the ram, but my old ass athlon x4 keeps handling everything I want it to do. Not the fastest or best graphics settings, but it works!
W
my old ocz agility 2 died was when I took the opportunity to go from 7 to 10. Had that ssd not died I would certainly be annoyed with a forced os update.

Sure goes to show how stagnant hardware development has come. Such marginal gains anymore

OS should not be collecting any telementry unless you can turn on and off at will

I do not mind sending diagnostic information to MS but seeing ads in my start menu or them handing over things to other entities no thank you.

I'm on Vista 32 with 1GB of RAM, not be choice.......

I'd slap a linux install on that rig. It will make your disk, RAM and CPU go much farther (if you choose the right one, Lubuntu is a good choice for a leightweight window manager) and wind up with a patched nearly impenetrable secur3e machine, compared to an EOL Windows install with wide open holes.

not if the PC is used just as a gaming machine - or no?
Considering the blaster worm would infect you computer before you were even done installing windowsXP it kinda proves that its not a matter of what you are running on your OS if the OS has a severe enough vulnerability.

Or if you need/want to use Windows, then Windows 10. Seriously, it is faster on low end hardware like that than Vista. Vista runs like hot garbage with 1GB of RAM while 10 runs ok. Not blazing, but ok. We have a few old ass systems at work for things like equipment control and all of them that have been upgraded to 10 run better than they did on Vista or even 7.

Still run XP machines with full internet access, never a virus. its more about personal habits than anything.

At work,

I have 5 servers to get off of Windows Server 2008 and onto Server 2016. These are mission critical middleware servers... in addition, we are migrating domains as well. Just completed a round of server migrations for our data virtualization servers to Server 2016 while migrating domains as well.. That took a ton of coordination with rolling out 100's of connection, and driver changes for numerous apps, and took many months of planning and creating a new server architecture. In the mean time, there are 100's of other servers that have to migrate domains and move off of server 2008 and onto new 2016 servers as well.. We have all kinds of hooks into those servers, and they have hooks into ours.. It takes a ton of coordination, testing, and issue handling with network (firewall, dns, etc).. Lots of fun to say the least!

For now, the new middleware servers are in place, aliases created, and software is being installed, but we will come down to wire executing the integration migration / rolling it out in time as coordination and overlap with existing efforts is going on...

So after all that is complete, we are good until 2027 on server 2016, but will probably be in the cloud by then... so that will be a whole nother round of integration migration... probably in another few years.

Personally, I am still using Windows 7 on my main rig with a dual boot option for windows 10. By the end of the year, I will begrudgingly make the switch over to Windows 10, but I mayP2V my windows 7 install as well to run inside windows 10 as my windows 7 install is over 10 years old (migrated across several builds), and there are lots of things I still use that work best on 7.

That is not how it works
You habits have no impact if your system are having a buffer over flow vulnerability

again during the times of blaster worms it could infect you system as soon as you typed in your network settings even before your first login,
so no habits alone does not protect you.

-- edit --
Today though buffer overflow might be more difficult to use as an attack vector since the NX/XD bits
but still anyone knowing how these things works know that there are many attacks possibilities that has nothing to do with the user habits or usage of the computer

"MS telemetry bad, WINDOWS 7 FOR LIFE!!"
"HEY GUYS WHAT ANTIVIRUS SHOULD I INSTALL AND GIVE SYSTEM PRIVILEGES TO? KASPERSKY?"
I use Kaspersky Free and paid malwarebytes, the only issue I had to take care was adding exceptions to both for each program.
After that it was smoothing sailing.

I wonder if Windows 7 will have a simple registry hack to get POS (point of sale) updates like XP does? POS (cash registers) have a long service life kind of like embedded PCs used in industrial machines and whatnot.

Windows 7 POSready extended support ends on October 12, 2021. So at best you gain 1 year and 10 months.

Which is fine, but any AV program will have the ability to look at everything you do, and upload any data to it's provider cloud for malware analysis. Or any analysis they want. Most of these companies are spread around the globe.

Meanwhile people get upset at MS for "telemetry".

Have you actually looked at the data in the Diagnostic Data View app that Microsoft themselves provide? I have, I have looked at the data it collects and sends to Microsoft and I see absolutely nothing in it that is nefarious, bad, evil, or whatever other kind of scary sounding word you can come up with. Full Mode? Yeah, that's bad; I looked at that mode and I was floored by what it collected. Basic Mode? Fine, absolutely fine; nothing to see here folks.

As for the GDPR and Windows 10's telemetry...

Microsoft announced they are granting GDPR protections to users worldwide instead of just the EU. If the European Union says it's fine, it's good enough for me. Who am I to argue with the strongest privacy law on the books anywhere in the world?

OS should not be collecting any telementry unless you can turn on and off at will
I can agree with that, users should be able to turn it completely off. However, this is how bugs get fixed, crashes get analyzed, etc. Look at Mozilla Bugzilla, you see crash dumps and stack traces all over the place when it comes to reporting crash bugs. This is stuff that is absolutely vital to fixing issues and like Mozilla, Microsoft needs this data too. How else are bugs supposed to be fixed if there's no data to determine why it crashes?

I've often found this funny. People are fine with installing AV software that sends data about what programs you're using to protect them from malware. Antivirus vendor... Good. Microsoft? Evil. Evil. Evil. EVIL!!!

Oh and while I have you here... Google good, Microsoft Evil. Evil. Evil. EVIL!!!

Anti-virus needs access to do its job. And knowing I'm using Mail is one thing. Having my specific mail activity phoned home for no good reason than to monetize it is another.

And the recent dunking on AV's intrusiveness seems to come from the Big Corp's and their advocates who want exclusivity on collecting data on you.

Having my specific mail activity phoned home for no good reason than to monetize it is another.
And yet Google and their GMail product does it all the time and nobody bats an eye. But again... Google good, Microsoft EEEEEEEVIL.

And besides, I've looked at the data through the data viewer app and that kind of data isn't being sent at all. OK sure, an inventory of software that's installed on your system is sent to Microsoft but I can understand why it's sent. If an update comes along and it breaks something and you have enough people with a specific piece of software installed (an an AV product) Microsoft can narrow things down to figure out caused the update to fail. This is part of the software development cycle. But of course instead of trying to understand why data like this would be required to solve issues everyone just jumps to "OMG! They're spying on us!".

But again... like I said previously, Basic Mode is fine; there's nothing nefarious, bad, evil, or whatever other kind of scary sounding word you can come up with. Full Mode? Yeah... I can understand why people would be freaked out about that, even I was freaked out. But again, Basic Mode is fine; just fine. Nothing bad. Move along, nothing to see here folks.

But MS is evil. :)

Another company doing questionable things doesn't make what they do ok.

Yes officer I killed my wife.... but so did the guy next door go arrest him.

Having said all that... MS is MORE EVIL. Yes they both practice the very shady practice of mining email for their ad engines. Still there is a reason why troll farms and the scum of the internet advertiser barrel buy Bing ads over Google ads. Bing can be hyper targeted compared to google ads. You want to target men age 55-56 married to women with 2-3 adult children n a specific small town in middle america with closet Gay porn issues and a penchant for buying hair dye and boner pills online .... MS ads has you covered for that demographic or any other creepily specific ad targeting. lol

It's the world we live in, it's the price we pay for a "free" Internet where there's no paywall everywhere you go.

Ya I know, my 1st laptop was a Vista 32 w/ 1GB more than a decade ago, bumped it to 2GB and was night and day.
Might throw Win10 on this, got to make sure I backup DownThemAll for Firefox since it's off the addons.
Not going to throw money on this POS system, CPU is a Core Duo 1.6mhz stuck at 1ghz, I think there's a damaged VR on the board when I had to clean the fan.

Bro you have been stuck with that POS broken laptop for years now. I've seen you mention it various times over the last few years...

You can not afford to sock $20 away for even a year? That wouor buy you a modern i3 based system aroubd the holidays easily.

Up it to $30 a month and you can afford a nice Ryzen APU based system that has 4 real cores and a decent GPU.

I mean get your priorities right. That is such a small amount of money.

Please show me evidence where he said he owns only that machine? Not everyone throws out something just because. Besides, fact is, the 64 Bit Version of Windows Vista with 4GB of ram was the best Windows OS, far better than Windows 7, in many ways.

No it wasn't actually. Windows 2000 was way better.

I do not agree with Windows 2000 being way better. It was good but, Vista was the best, with SP2, anyways. (The OS just flew along, even with a HDD.) You do not have to agree and that is fine but then again..........

Best may be a stretch in my opinion, but it certainly does not deserve the bad reputation Vista got from the rocky launch.

It was certainly the first modern Windows OS.

The first to have both protected mode RAM (introduced in XP) AND UAC introduced with Vista.

These are the two most important windows improvements this side of the Windows 95 launch.
