Rift S

It's not a side grade, but not really a moderate one. It's good for new people, but not worth it if you have a HMD already. Unless you just want it because it's new.

That's not true all the way.

One reviewer said the lcd with true sub pixels unlike oled, eliminates sde almost nearly, and text is crisp and readable now.

If anything that's worth an upgrade. Also God beams were totally nearly gone.

Also tracking was stellar with no dropouts when controllers were below and above the player.

I'm not arguing. Just reporting what reviewers are saying.

I can read text just fine with the Rift. I have answered stuff in the forums using it, though it's slow with the VR keyboard.

Oh well I have a visual impairment so its probably going to help me. Return polices are great if not. So lets agree its not an upgrade for everyone but for some it has potential.

But yeah I dont know how you can be browsing hf on your oculus/vive. I can barely read words in Rift unless the font is large.

The text on the current Rift looks like garbage so just because you can accept it doesn't mean it doesn't need a massive improvement. The god rays were probably the most annoying thing on the current Rift to me though and it's nearly eliminated on the Rift s.

It looks good to me? Easily readable. Maybe you have really bad eyes? I do as well, but looks great.
I also have SS set to 1.5. I will switch when the res is at a 2.0 revision and not in between. Why I wish they would just release a good HMD with a high end GPU minimum.

I have absolutely perfect vision. I really think something is wrong with your standards if you think the text looks perfect at that horrible resolution up close. Like I said just because you're used to it and you accept it does not mean that there is not room for massive improvement. Pretty much any person that's ever properly reviewed the Rift lately has talked about how poor the text is especially compared to all these newer headsets and that's one of the reasons they want a much higher resolution. Of course we have people on here that even say the God Rays don't bother them or they don't notice them so that goes to show that some people are just completely oblivious to some things.

Yes, the new ones look better, but not enough to change over. Like I said. I want VR 2.0, not an in between one.

I just updated to the public test of Oculus software.

There is all kinds of provisions for the S in the software now alongside the RIft.

Also there is a feature that lets you add a deivice. Assuming you can add an S to your current room scale setup, it would seem hopeful that the S can be used with your 3 or 4 room scale cameras you already have set up for even better tracking. That would be awesome .

I haven't even seen Rift promotions stating this. If they have eliminated SDE I would have thought they would be announcing that given the price point and resolution of the unit.

Not eliminated, at least they are not going to advertise this. It was independent reports by those that had hands on time that it was significantly reduced.

Maybe I shouldnt have started a new thread, mods delete it if you like, but the Rift S is now out for Pre-Order.

I might pre-order it locally from Bestbuy or Microcenter (if available) because I can easily return it if it doesn't pan out. I do not necessarily need to wait on reviews from pros when I can just try the damn thing out my self.

As far as my original oculus, I will be able to do a side by side comparison in real time. I am really excited at the ability use the S anywhere I like without having cameras all over the room. This might be worth the trade over for me.

This tech is moving along slower than LCDs themselves! All these new ones (since what 2012?) are just so.. who gives af, in comparison. Still too niche I guess.

Preorders on the rift S are selling out.

I was able to get one on bestbuy with a ship date of may 21. If it sucks I'll return it. If it's great, I'll sell.my rift cv1 and recoup some of the money.

I pre ordered Rift S as well - will be my first entry into VR. Tired of waiting for true VR 2.0 experience as it may be a while until we get something radically better. Valve specs looks amazing but not worth nearly 3x premium (to me).

Can't decide if I want to buy one of these or a PS VR (since it'll also be compatible with the PS5).

Anyone own a PS VR and an Oculus Rift care to chime in? Seems like the PS VR has better support/development, but the Oculus Rift would be overall better in quality/performance.

If you have the computer for it the PC VR solutions are much better due to the far superior tracking. That's not to say the psvr is bad, it's actually very very good considering what it is and that is run off a PS4. The game library for the psvr is awesome and the headset is great but it will never fully compare to pcvr untill they develop new controllers and better tracking.

You can also use the PSVR on PC. However, even the old Rift is much better overall as a headset, the only reason to get it would be if you're interested in specific software on PS.

Same here. I preordered the 10th but it's still showing a ship date of the 21st. I went with BB for exactly the same reason. I sold my Vive last week to cover it. It was a great headset but I needed to have it in a different room as my PC and that made for some frustrating complications that led to me not using it much. The Rift S's inside out tracking is a huge draw to me. I can use it away from my PC when I need the space, but I can bring it into my game room for seating games, which I tend to enjoy more. The better display (i'll take reduced SDE over OLED blacks any day) and better controllers only add to my anticipation. If it turns out to have too many compromises over what I come to like with the Vive, I'll return it and get an Index instead. But if the S does what I want it to, for $600 less, I'm happy.

What's VR 2.0? You might be waiting another 10 years for whatever that is...
Where the res, fov ,etc is at a point where you need a 1080ti at MINIMUM. I dont care about the low end gpu's compatibility.

Nobody here got the Rift S? Thought there would be some reports here today.
im sure a large majority that can afford to buy these on launch are probably working atm. Id expect more posts/impressions by end of today/tomorrow

I picked mine up from Best Buy this morning, managed to play for an hour before work. Thus far, coming from a Vive, I'm happy. It's exactly what I wanted it to be. The tracking is not as good as Vive, but it's good enough, and the ability to draw a place space anywhere is really helpful for my setup. The lack of SDE is well worth losing the OLED. It's comfortable, the controllers are great, and it's all around a very good setup.

How do you manage that? I can't for the life of me read text. I spend forever adjusting the damn thing and still can't readable text on my Rift (which i've only had less than a week now).

Your setup may be off. Mine is easily readable. I sometimes browse when I cool off from a game.
