Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

Chris is crazier than I thought. Sounds like his wife is nuts too. No way this game will ever hit an actual 1.0.

This is his MO. He's the type of guy you need upper management to keep an eye on and approve everything he does, because he's constantly trying to add or perfect more stuff at the expense of the actual project.

Simply put: Chris Roberts should never be the final authority on anything.

This. Chris needs to be supervised, not the other way around.

And that's why people like me "knew" SC was going to be late by years. And its becoming clear that their financials are mess, and they are dependent on backers purchasing premium content to stay afloat.

Which brings us to the major problem: SC has become so incredibly backer focused, it's created a barrier of entry. Even if the game ever launches, I doubt it can get enough of a player base to be financially viable. SC is now and forever dependent on selling premium items in order to stay afloat, which is not a long term financial model that will work.

I'm not a backer but i still hope they release the game in some form. We all read how freelancer was a far cry from its intiial design. Even so, people loved it and are "hungry" for a similar game.

However this is not the way to produce a game like this.

This we all called it years and years when they started selling ships. This thing is years late and so far form done it's sad

3.5 was just released, you should check it out!

If you don't already have the game, definitely grab it and check out 3.5, here's a link:

Enjoy!

$45 is the price of a finished AAA game if you shop smart. Considering how far this game has to go I wouldn't be willing to drop even a dollar on it. Unless you enjoy alphas and want to wait 2-3 years (per their recent roadmap, beta is sometime 2020) I wouldn't consider putting money down this early. And we all know there is a huge chance this will see another delay.

Original release date was 2014. I am still waiting for Squadron 42...

This is still so far from an alpha as a clay mockup of a car from an actual driveable vehicle.

We realize this, but while you wait for the game let me introduce you to this new Concept ship, starting at $450. If you buy the EFR variant it will come with an exclusive gun and in game baseball cap for $25 extra that you can show off to all your in game friends.

I played the PTU about a month ago which is supposed to be the absolutely bleeding edge experimental build, and there was remarkably little difference from the public build I played a year ago. The "game" still has almost no content at all, no narrative, no clear mission structure, no tutorial. It feels like playing unreal SDK. Or cryengine SDK for that matter, except without the actual developer tools.

You want to see how screwed they are, just have a peek over at Stretch Goals, and laugh at how little is implemented, and how little is likely to ever be implemented.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/funding-goals

This is my favorite stretch goal of them all:

A new star system will be added to the game for every $100,000 pledged, with descriptions posted to the Comm-Link.
  • $3.1M: Odin System
  • $3.2M: Tyrol System
  • $3.3M: Kellog System
  • $3.4M: Goss System
  • $3.5M: Orion System
  • $3.6M: Ellis System
  • $3.7M: Cathcart System
  • $3.8M: Tal System
  • $3.9M: Geddon System
  • $4.0M: Chronos System
This is proof in the pudding that Chris has no business sense, and shouldn't be in charge of ANYTHING. They still have one star system, and most accounts put them at $200 million spent. Obviously, they should be at 2,000 star systems, by his estimates.

This project was doomed from the start, and will continue ti be doomed until Chris Roberts is removed. Unfortunately, he like his religion with fervent followers, so that's never going to happen.

That means you will never get a game even approaching the quality or depth of Freelancer, a project that had to be take n away from Chris, and then still took two years for it to be fixed and released.

Chris Roberts is the Sleazy Used Car Salesman of Software Development. He swears he sold you a classic Porsche, but it's actually a Yugo with a conversion kit. Oh, and "Engine not included" is buried in the fine print there somewhere.

And I don't doubt you one bit. Best of luck to CIG but this project still hasn't shaped up into a fun game worth playing yet and clearly has many years left of work to do.

I mean the article above about the game crashing during a demonstration and having Roberts fill in the time with an advertisement is just mind boggling. We all hope for the day the game is more than little modules and systems loosely strung together and becomes a cohesive experience, but I'm really wondering if it will ever materialize at this point.

I spotted this brand-new video, and had to share the terror!

Watch in horror as a gigantic Hammerhead crashes into a Constellation...and nothing happens. Yay Elastic Collision physics fidelity!

My favorite analysis:

It's a cool concept and the kind of thing you do in sandbox games. Big, dangerous NPC ship! Disable it, shoot out the airlocks, board and kill the NPC crew, and you'll be able to steal and fly it!

And it works exactly like I said in that sentence. But the ship will jitter. Shooting out the airlock has no feedback and it just pops open when it's ready. Boarding will cause you to clip through the floor and shake and bounce. The NPC crew will be stuck to the chairs. You can fly it, but none of the HUDs will work for you. It's like... none of the bones are intact. They just keep layering stuff in on top. It's this monumental house of cards and you can see it teetering with every action by the player.

They are doing JPEGs like no other game has done before. Once the JPEG pipelines are in place, the game will self-develop.

Then get the fuck out of this thread and take all your circle-jerk buddies with you.

Someone is butthurt. I was just pointing out the game is far from done using their own recently advertised release schedule. If you get that upset over what the developers themselves are saying maybe you should re-evaluate your priorities.

Oh, I'm sorry, we're interrupting the Sermon from Preacher Chris about which of these ship packages will take you closer to godliness.

Remember to tithe often. These JPGs don't draw themselves.

You know, I think the people who shit all over this game are expecting too much from it in its current state. I knew what to expect when I got into it (A friend gifted me a starter pack, and I melted the ship down and upgraded to an Avenger Titan). It has massively improved since I got it in the middle of last year, and I look forward to the future - but I know its going to be slow progress. ANYONE should know that at this point in time, and for the past many years, that the game is clearly not capable of delivering everything it envisions to be yet. If you expected otherwise, its your own damn fault for ignoring the facts that are easily available.

I dont use the game for ship combat, nor FPS. I treat it like Flight Simulator in space, with a cargo shipping/trading function - thats what I enjoy, and it generally works wonderfully. I take missions to deliver stuff from one location to another, or I go make my own trade routes running from mining outposts to the most profitable hubs for selling. I also enjoy flying around the planets and moons just for the sake of flying around them.

That said, I have spent a grand total of $25 of my own money in the game, and see little reason to change that at this point in time. Im not making bank by trading 8 SCU at a time, but I make 15% profit on average. Once they stop resetting in-game purchases, Ill save up slowly but surely for a larger ship to do larger trades with - but I dont see a reason to do it now, as its just a waste of time with them resetting every month or two.

All said and done, I've gotten more than $25 worth of enjoyment out of it, so its been worth the money. I've gotten more than the $40 my friend paid to get the starter pack for me worth of enjoyment out of it. In the end, if you feel you get your moneys worth, then fuck what other people say about how you spend your money - even if its several thousand dollars.

Bold statement blaming upset users who paid for years of feature creep

Right, this is why I've called it a Religion at this point. The True Believers never question their faith, even though other gaming companies would have gone under in the same situation, with thsir burn rate

You believe what Preacher Chris tells you to be the Word of God, ,and you back him out of feat of being one-upped by your loaded fellow parishioners.

The inability to question WHY, is the very foundation on which modern cults are built. Did you Drink the Kool Aid, yet?

This fear and uncertainty is created by each Press Release for a new pay-for ship, with language like "It's Going To Be a Game Changer, but limited quantities are available!" So basically , "Reserve yours NOW before anyone else does, and you can buy your space in Heaven buy your space in Star Citizen. You have t be FIRST IN LINE!

The belief fostered by Chris Roberts that there WILL BE A GAME in the near future is the biggest Video Game scam ever committed. Because it is self-perpetuating, assuming nobody ever questions him.

FighterAce124, even if you don't pay, you are just as much to blame as your friend for perpetuating the farce.
I know you folks are allergic to using the Five Whys, but they are your best tool against shysters.

I understand the criticisms of this game, and I share many of them.

That said, it really doesn't need to be reiterated 600,000 times in the exact same way. I feel like if you took out all of the repetitive bullshit anti-SC trolling in this thread, it'd only be about 30% the size.

We get it. Chris Roberts sucks and the game will never be finished. There are no new developments other than the game still not being released, so I'd love to not have to read the same nonsense over and over for the next several years or however long that takes.

This level of trolling would have resulted in deleted posts and bans in virtually any other thread. Not sure why it is being allowed here.

Eh, I'm not seeing anything especially bad here. I just pointed out that according to their own schedule the game won't be ready for another 3 years at minimum. Then some others and I poked fun at the recent event which was fairly underwhelming especially when Roberts tried to peddle more things for sale when the game wasn't working properly. Even if you support the project in its current state, it is fairly humorous.

You were the wrong person to quote, there are others tho more deserving of his response.. like they wake up each morning to get their daily SC troll on :ROFLMAO:

Wasn't really aimed at you, but you can go back through the thread and virtually every page has someone trolling about the game's state...and this thread is 440+ pages long. It just gets old, especially when there are no updates to the situation so there's no reason to repeat the same talking points ad nauseum.

You mean just as pointless as Lorien's constant "great" additions and "super" updates for a game that is obviously a scam?

To be fair it is kinda in the thread title:
Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

So it make sense the JPG's, event news and updates would continue to get posted with other media :)

The thread was reported multiple times and I think a few of the heaver trolls got temp ban's a year or two ago and this was almost closed.
Most of the main posters don't address the standard negativity as those folks are just as religious in their hatred as they claim the supporters are on the opposite side.
There was another thread elsewhere that was created for people to complain but no one liked using that one for some reason :p

Lose lose so most just don't join in which is the only reason this thread is alive.

.

There are two different "truths" being posted to this thread.

Loriien gives you the more positive take on what it's like to the a Star Citizen.

And folks like me keep this thread grounded i the other half of the truth, since perpetual optimists will tend to never mention all the bugs or poor design decision they encountered.

There are two sides to the truth here. Every statement I've made can be backed-up with in-game evidence (even my clearly-marked opinion posts). And I havn't made any personal attacks at anyone.

It's not "trolling" when you're telling the truth. But I'll agree that ScYcS needs to calm down, and cut the personals.

Looking at your previous post I don't really see any mention of "bugs or poor design decisions", I just see a rant about "religions and cults".

So yeah, I would call that trolling.

Lorien provides news about the goings-on of the community. Whether or not you feel that information is useful, is debatable, sure. But constantly going on about how the game is never going to be finished and Chris Roberts/people who follow him are dumb, is not productive discussion at this point.

If you have some actual criticism of the actual game, let's hear it and discuss it. I don't think anyone is going to argue against the game being buggy and nowhere near finished, though.

FWIW, I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone put money into this game at this point. However, I am still interested in any real updates about the progress, and having to sift through a dozen shitposts every time I check the thread to get there is obnoxious.
