IGAVANIA Kickstarter! Bloodstained: Ritual of the night

Hand drawn high def 2d would have been epic. Sadly my interest is dying for this game which is a bummer. At this point I am expecting highest quality best made vania game yet, just not seeing it.
If the game were rendered in the 2D style originally presented in the concept art on the Kickstarter then I agree it would have been amazing. I don't know why they felt like they needed to go the 3D route with this one. I'm still optimistic about the game, though.

Hi-Res handdrawn 2d is vastly more expensive than 3d. If this does well though that may be possible in the future.

Blasphemous has so far managed to do it. Well, maybe, not high res. However, I think anyone looking at that style wouldn't consider it poor. I do think Bloodstained would have been better served by a similar approach to Blasphemous.

I agree, it's easier to manage the style they went with. I think it's vastly easier to find artist within a 3D field than 2D this day and age. Also, at the time of announcement the genre wasn't in the shape it is in now. I do think Bloodstained shouldn't have had as many "unlocks" as it did. As, I think they should have budgeted more for the game they wanted instead of a game they dreamed of. Just from a realistic standpoint. It would have come out sooner if they did it right...and they could have incorporated the lessons learned into a sequel.

Still, I'm excited for it...even if it only turns out ok. I don't think it'll be terrible. I just think it's going to be "too much" and not focused.

I don't know any 3D artist who isn't competent as a 2D artist.

The 2d games like blasphemous and others that do it are hardly high res. Creating a high res 2d game is hell of expensive which is why there are only a few, usually japanese, companies that tend to get the bulk of the work. You'd be hoping that someone like Arc Systems (guilty gear, blazblue, dragonball fighter z) picked up the game if you wanted high quality 2d sprites.

Thunder Lotus Games would be my pick for modern style 2D. Sometimes I like pixel-art though, so Yacht Club might be my pick there. I agree though, Arc is good.

I like the 8bit style bloodstained and am happy with that, but Arc doing a SoTN style game would be great. Hell, add gradius to that as well, their Contra was amazing.

Blood Stained reminds me of Blackthorne game from the DOS era. (good thing by the way) I still haven't picked it up yet, but I hear the current version is quite good now.

Bloodstained 8bit is sort of a cross between CV3, SOTN, and Bloodlines. You can tackle it by swapping between the players the normal way or you can only use the guy with the sword and power him up with all sorts of crazy moves and other items. It's a multiple pathing multiple play through type of game.

Actually, I knew that. When I replied for some reason I was thinking of Slain, and not the 8-bit Bloodstained. I’ve played through the 8-bitish Bloodstained and enjoyed it.

I guess I'm stuck in the past, Castlevania 1 - 4 sure weren't. Symphony was borderline, but still maintained its roots.

Some of the art was animed up for them and some not, it wasn't clearly not though on any level. There were also chibi version there. ChiNoRondo and Dracula X were hardcore anime, SOTN was pretty hardcore anime.

The only really "not anime" are the two 3d ones for ps3/360 and those are part of the reason the series went kaput

Pseudo-16 bit. I want more and bigger sprites, parallax like crazy, true-color palette, but let's stick with FM music, because it sounds nice and arcadey. Enhanced YM2612-ish.

Fun thing is that SoTN reused a TON of sprites from Rondo and Dracula X, all that crap is really 16 bit.

True. So, add more layers of scrolling (including foreground objects that fly between player character and camera on occasion) revert to FM music (though I do really enjoy SotN's music) or at least add it as an option. (I really like the Bloodlines music for example.) Maybe add a zoom for larger than full-screen bosses in some cases (ala Sundered), and hire about 100 pixel-artists. That will just about do it. ;)

I would love to see newer 16 bit stuff as well. Really want to see a brand new Sci fi game with the atmophere of metroid and bosses.
I can't wait to see whats been done with the new battle toads hopefully they didn't go 3d with it. I'm not sure what it is but take for example metroid samus returns vs Am2r. I enjoyed Am2r visuals way more and wish side scrollers would stick to this. Also hope once the cuphead guys are done with the new dlc we see a brand new game from them using the cuphead engine bc those graphics were amazing!

It's for sale on Steam June release date if this has Castlevania vibes I would get it. I don't think any game comes close to the original as far as bosses.

Which "original"? The original CV? Yeah those were nice and hard. Rondo where the full move to complete anime, cut scene, plot driven Castlevania started? Yeah pretty nice all in all. SoTN? You mean the one where the bosses became mind numbling easy for the first time ever in CV and a lot of them were straight swipe rips from Rondo, but you got a couple really cool looking ones before you slaughtered them with little effort?

The series has rebooted itself several times.

Yet all of them are good games in their own ways. Personally I prefer the eased up action, more exploring, and more plot (though not too heavy) aspects of the newer ones. I get more satisfaction out of finding new paths, new weapons, etc. than just pure difficulty. Not to say that I don't like a good challenge. That's why I play things like Dead Cells and Sundered, but I really like every CV (except the 3D ones). The N64 ones while they had some potential were just too clunky for me. The newer Lords ones on PC didn't really feel quite like CVs to me either, though they weren't clunky like the N64 ones at least.

A lot of things got much easier after the 8/16bit era. It was just more extreme with CV. The 8bit games were sociopathic at times, the 16bit ones were grander and more engrossing but they were much more reasonable in terms of difficulty. SoTN just sort of fell off the cliff here and even if you could ever beat CV1 or CV3 without cheating you could probably go in blind and get through SoTN without losing a life. Nakedly running SoTN is still easier than beating CV1. Part of the fact that SoTN is objectively an very easy game with no skill curve, and part of it is the sheer amount of utterly broken stuff you can pick up that just shreds things.

I'm not overly a fan of games that are mean for the sake of being mean and then NES games do dance in that area at times. But bosses should at least be a threat, and as awesome as exploring in SoTN is there really aren't any bosses that are threats, unless you richter mode it!

I want this game but I wonder if it will be the god of all platforming side scrollers?

I think it will be great, but definitely not the god of all side scrollers. Besides that category is too broad.

I picked it up I think the younger generation has a hard time trying to justify the price because it doesn't look cutting edge or new.
I think when streamers start playing it on release it's going to catch on like wildfire.

Gonna wait on sum reviews never buy a game before that! Plus j3rk made my backlog even worse lol waiting on an re2 remake sale and the messanger before I get this one..hopefully it feels like cv but i don't care for the graphics...

I'm hoping for the best, I really am, and hope it will be among the top tier of "Metroidvanias"...despite my serious reservations caused by dropping Mac/Linux support.. Oh by the way, anyone who didn't Kickstarter "Special Edition" the game have no fear - there won't be any "exclusive" in game content ! There is some game content that was promised originally to be specifically for Kickstarter backers, notably the Swordwhip weapon and a couple special bosses including one of Iga himself having multiple drac-like forms. There was a poll to backers asking what should be done about this content - should it stay exclusive to backers, or varying ways for making it available to others. Apparently enough of us voted as I did to grant the content to everyone, and they decided that in deference to this content only being for KS backers who chose a "special edition", it will be a modestly priced DLC released a little bit after the game's official release - KS backers of sufficient tier will be granted it gratis.

They also noted that some elements of the gameplay, including elements like various extra modes, additional playable characters, and perhaps most notably both online and local co-op, will be added post launch. They claim to not be cutting any stretch goals which is good and I'd rather they take the time to get it right, but it does make me grit my teeth a bit considering they already cut Mac and especially Linux support, which were part of the original campaign no less! More info on this up above, but one of the reasons they gave was something very brief about middleware and online play, so I can only hope if they're taking more time to bring these features, maybe they can revisit supporting Mac and Linux - delays can be understandable, but cutting the OSes themselves much less how they did so remains extremely frustrating. Thus, a chance to reverse course is welcome.

perhaps kojima can do a kickstarter to buy majority stake in konami or buy his IP back I mean now that they decided to concentrate their focus on pachinko machines and mobile....

Honestly who cares about the ip...just make a game with a new name, characters etc and it could end up being amazing. Owning the ip won't make the game great...I'd rather see new ips emerge anyways I'm sick of the movie industry/gaming just remaking shit and it usually ends up much worse than the original. Give us a new world we've never seen, a new experience, new characters etc.
