In the market for a cheaper used cards. I usually prefer nvidia when it comes to GPU's. Recently sold my 2060 to get some cash for something else but need a cheap GPU to hold me over. I have looked at some reviews but never know how current the results are for the older cards.

It seems like AMD cards age better. The 580 has the vram and price advantage.

I basically only play BF and COD @ 1440p. Looking at youtube videos they seem to trade blows.

Any thoughts?

They are very close performance wise. You wil find 580’s for less.

If value is your concern, the 580 is your choice.

I had a 1060 6GB in my PC before I just rebuilt it and my son has a 570 8GB in his and although I was running it in my old X58/i7 920 system and my son has a B450/2600 in his, his 570 seemed to get as good or better performance in the few games I compared it with. I definitely noted more consistent performance in the RE2 remake, but otherwise you can't really go wrong with either card in terms of performance per dollar, but I'd say today the 580 is a better value and performer for the money overall.

Funny enough, I had the impression that 580s were bad for VR, but I managed to snag one for a deal (ex mining) and gave it to a friend for his Vive. Ran some Gorn, Accounting, Beat Saber: It actually runs awesome, either AMD has improved drivers or OG VR reviewers are stuck-up.

i like nvidia because i can alt + f10 and record the last 3 minutes of what ive been playing. completely invaluable. i know there are other things that can do it but not as conveniently integrated as that. for that i say 1060.

I know, its always the little things with nvidia, which I will usually take a small drop in performance to gain.

I’ve not once recorded anything with those bloatware “features”. Honestly I’ve had nvidia primarily since the GeForce 2 days. Maybe I’m a rare duck?

This would never be a metric for deciding between these cards. At least for me. Plus other software is also capable of the same function.

I have not and will not.

I ended up going with the 1060. Main reason being I will use it down the road in my HTPC for madvr and potentially for transcoding in my Emby server.

i am telling you, as i said other software including obs can do nothing like this.

Just looking at current benchmarks dose not paint the whole picture as I find very good support for older games and many support CX for AMD

I think lightscout already had has mind made up. No point in showing any further evidence if the 580 outperforming the 1060.

Well, there's always buyers remorse to look forward to.
I jest.

I'd go with the 580, simply because you have a Freesync monitor & the extra 2GB of VRAM.

I purchased my XFX 580 8GB for just $180.00 a short while ago, and came with three free games. I thought it as the deal of the century, I've never hit the purchase button so fast.

I agree that the 580 is the best bang for your buck right now.

580 is a great deal, had an offer for one as low as $115. I don't think for the little gaming I'll do the 2gb of vram thing is that big of a deal.

But at $130 I am very happy with the 1060. And I know down the road I would have regretted the 580 when the card goes to transcode server or HTPC usage. Thanks for the feedback, I am just too loyal to Nvidia I suppose.

I had a "too good to believe" deal locally here last week for a Radeon RX 580 4GB for a mere $50! Granted, it's only 4GB, but so what. I think it was a steal. Had I found a 1060 6GB for roughly the same price, I would've picked the 1060, but oh well, I'm still very happy with the RX 580.

Yeah man that is a no brainer for sure. I would have bought that just for a backup.

Nvidia wins out in the recording/ streaming front with NVENC. Much better performance and quality compared to AMD's offering. So if that is a concern, go with the 1060

Could someone post a good link on why Nvidia cards are better at transcode server or HTPC usage than AMD cards? I ask because back in the day when I had an HTPC it ran an AMD card and seemed to be just fine (this was a pretty long time ago).

For me I use Emby (plex alternative). And nvidia has more options for transcoding as far as support and number of codecs it can transcode.

Might be tough to find out for sure. [H] was one of the only sites giving solid VR break downs :(

I'm not really sure why it would have any issues as a HTPC, but as for transcoding, I'd assume it has something to do with the NVENC encoder being miles better performing than AMD's encoder chip... Will look for an article regardless. Nvidia puts tons of development effort into making nvenc as good as possible for streamers and content creators. I don't know of anyone who will recommend you use an AMD card for hardware encoding live gameplay footage for streams or recording. The quality just isn't there.

You're referring to nv specific encoding outside of shadowplay, right? Effects and editing acceleration? Will agree there, but just straight SP vs RL has been a wash for a couple years now. Neither is better than the other.

I was referring to streaming or recording live video with obs, shadowplay, xsplit and such programs. Not sure what you mean by sp vs RL?

Shadowplay vs Relive. Neither is demonstrably better than the other in image quality or efficiency. That argument has been dead for a while now. They're both comparable and both inferior to a dedicated encoding rig.

If you might try Linux, the 580 gets you "open source" drivers (a plus!). However, the 1060 gets you better performance there and HW acceleration in Plex.

(pros and cons)

Thank you. This dead horse always seems too be dredged up. It's like me saying nvidia is shit because fx series.

Everything is better on RX 580 8GB, the price is lower. GTX 1060 6GB at best will have CUDA, but you don't want to use CUDA on a 6GB card with so low performance (like less than half of the RX 580 in ISO compute) and GTX 1060 supports Raytracing in games, but is just unplayable with this GPU. Expect for the RX 590 8GB to drop on its price much much more. One can already find Vega 56 with blower at the same price, and close to the GTX 1060 6GB. The Vega 56 is so much better.
