Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Getting higher than 60FPS

I actually found the thread on WSGF kind of annoying to follow, so here's a summary of instructions:

  1. Back-up your original sekiro.exe
  2. Replace it with the one inside sekiro_v4.7z
  3. Inside Sekiro_FPS_v2.7z extract either the appropriate FPS-capped version, or the uncapped one
  4. (I used the uncapped one + RTSS to lock down the FPS to 90)
  5. Run the uncapper "patcher" on the sekiro.exe you extracted in step 2
  6. Enjoy
I was going to attach the files here but I hit a file limit.

The exe in step 2 can also be hex-edited for FOV, or there's another patcher but it fires off a hit in my antivirus for a cheat engine. I'll try increasing the FOV later, haven't had a real problem with it since I play with a controller and lean back away from the monitor.

(I should probably edit the PCGWiki page on Sekiro with these instructions too, maybe later.)

Updated for the patch: http://www.wsgf.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=176084#p176084

Does uncapping the FPS cause any issues or have any effect on gameplay? I know sometimes on games that were capped at 60FPS were capped for a reason, either physics, damage, durability etc.

Not that I've noticed. I was initially worried about durability (i.e. Dark Souls 2) but I haven't found anything yet. Personally it looks nicer / plays smoother.

the Owl Father boss fight was more challenging then Shinobi Owl...the only real negative about this game is the re-use of bosses and having to backtrack through previously cleared areas...

I struggled with Owl Father a lot, I died more to him than Isshin The Sword Saint. But found both pretty good fights. Isshin was definitely more intimidating though with the amount of phases, but I found him easier to learn his moveset also Father Owl gives you little room to breath.

Owl (Father) was easier for me because by that time I had already completed the game once and was at the end of my 2nd playthrough so I pretty much had all the deflection timings and mechanics down...if I had done the Purification ending during my 1st playthrough he would have probably been much tougher...I'm looking forward to doing a Shura ending playthrough where you get to fight 2 unique bosses

Yea I'm going for Shura ending right now, because I want to fight the other 2 bosses. I got the Purification ending first playthrough just by following Emma's questline. People say the Dragon ending is the "true" ending so I'll probably do that next after Shura.

I didn't use any walkthroughs or guides during my first playthrough so I ended up with the Immortal Severance ending...the Purification and Return (Dragon's Homecoming) endings require a lot of eavesdropping and specific triggers which are hard to do unless you are specifically looking for it

Killed off Genichiro Ashina last night. Those first two forms are pretty easy (I barely got hit after 2-3 tries), but they can take a while. That third form is rough, though. The timing for the lightning counter is weird and with the effects onscreen it's even tougher to execute. It's a borderline instakill if you screw it up. I think I got him on the 5th or 6th try, though.

I want to build up some additional skills. Is there a good area to farm XP? Right now about the best I can find is the central portion of the Hirata Estate. It's an easy run through about 25 enemies that I can take out quickly. Still, each run takes 5-10 minutes and only builds about 1/2 a bar. The area with the monks seems similar, but they're a little tougher and don't seem any more fruitful offhand.

I didn't follow guides either, I learned not to do that after I spoiled Dark Souls 1 for myself following a guide. I was stuck on the Purification questline for 6 hours trying to figure parts of it out. All day Saturday pretty much, I was about to give up on it and go with Kuro's ending.

go to gun fort, you encounter snake eyes but can ignore them, have to dodge bullets and get to the sculptors idol... then you can farm. the enemies are very rewarding.

I've been there. Do you mean the area just before you fight the miniboss with the shotgun or the main fort area where you fight the Giraffe mini-boss? Some of those guys in there are pretty rugged.

Yeah, right where the giraffe boss is. you can backstab one gunner, go back to deaggro the others, or alternately use the attachment you get in that area to make the second guy turn around for a backstab, the other enemies are then pretty easy. it currently takes me about 6 runs per point which is much better than elsewhere. Pretty good money if you need that.

Good to know. I actually don't need money, oddly enough. I've bought-out the entire inventory from every vendor except the guy who sells upgrade materials. The joys of stockpiling money bags until I need to buy something.
I'm mainly trying to get some additional XP to unlock skills like Shadowrush or one of the latent abilities that makes your gourd heal more.

my go to spot for farming is the Ashina Castle- Upper Tower Antechamber...best to farm here after the ninjas invade this way you get the ninja enemies here...easy to kill a bunch of enemies (or let them fight each other) and it's a quick run back to the Idol ...for late game I like Outskirts Wall- Stairway (again very late game)

Sekiro: Got Patched Twice

It's now 1.04.

saw that, don't know what the hell was changed, even in some last patch. people have been reading off the notes, some exploits don't work other things do, but nobody has gone and actually stated how things have changed in the game. I guess once you have "git gud" it is no longer possible to tell how the game plays differently

While probably the least fun thing ever, it seems like backstabbing the first enemy in the Gun Fort over and over is a damn quick farming technique at my current level. Just take him out, run back to the idol and repeat.

The only spot I actually farmed was at end game where you go from Old Grave to Ashina Outskirts before fighting Demon of Hatred. I farmed the spot across the bridge a few times with the red swordsmen, there's also pretty good money as well. I think it also dropped the posture+ candy, might be wrong on that though. I think the enemies were 2-3 that were 1300xp, and 5 or so that were 600xp.

Now that I finally have Shadowrush I probably won't need to farm again. Everything else seems like a pretty reasonable 1-3 levels. The fact that it required 6 assumes that you're either stockpiling for a while or farming.

I'm finally starting to adjust to parrying and blocking rather than dodging everything. I've also discovered that jumping during combat is rather helpful. I can't tell if it's supposed to be used like this, but you can use jump-in moves almost like a fighting game combo starter. You can also jump to get the hell out of dodge when things aren't working out.

once you beat all the Headless you get upgraded Sugarfall versions of all the sugars so it makes the regular sugars pointless...

finished my 2nd run this time with the Purification ending...I still have one more run to do with the Shura ending...all I really want is to face every boss...to get all the achievements it requires a NG+ run which is not as important to me but since I'm close I'll probably do it...

genichiro has been throwing an ass whipping on me the past 2 days. ya, git gud and all that, but the reflexes are way past my prime, and this game, you can't exactly cheese it like the DS series. so I left to find unexplored areas. found some mist monster, easiest boss ever.

Don't blame age, slowing reflexes or anything. Just keep fighting him you will destroy him eventually once you have his moves ingrained in your head and how to react to them.

the enemies that seemed tough or impossible during your first run will be much easier during your next run...I pretty much rolled through my 2nd run...with NG+ you get an item called Kuro's Charm right at the beginning...you can choose to return it to Kuro or keep it...if you return it the difficulty goes up...you can also use the Demon's Bell and the returned Charm to stack for an even more difficult playthrough

holy shit, did the second phase of guardian ape on the first attempt. only got off one centipede pull also before running out of emblems. must be all the youtube videos I watched lol

I'm at demon of hatred, got all the beads ! Loving it. Probably get my assed kicked for a couple days !

This weekend I managed to polish off the ape and do all of the side stuff for the Mortal Blade. I'm on to the Ashina depths now.
I like that the game doesn't brick wall you with bosses as often as Dark Souls does. Once you get to the Ashina Castle, you can set off in 7-8 different directions without having to fight bosses. At least if you don't want to.
I still don't really like the focus on long battles and whittling enemies down, but I appreciate the game. I'd love a DLC that gives you a slow powerhouse weapon instead.

I'm continuing to make pretty decent progress. Much like Dark Souls, I'm able to plow through most new areas on the first try. I really only struggle when I hit a boss or mini-boss. The 2nd go-round with the headless ape was a bit of a surprise.
I'm now in the misty areas, where I just took out my 3rd headless enemy. It feels like those battles involve a little bit of luck since they can start spamming attacks and waste your confetti.

Just curious - what special attacks and prosthetics are people typically using?
I still find myself rarely using prosthetics. I think I just don't like the fact that they're limited. It's a lot like the guns in Bloodborne, which I also almost never used. When I do, it's usually just using the Axe on enemies that defend a lot.
For special attacks, shadowstep seems pretty good for at least allowing you to get a hit and then get out of dodge (or land some air hits). The overhead chop attack is another one I like. I only have a couple monk abilities, but they aren't super impressive thus far.

I find the annoyance factor of this game building up to where I almost don't want to play it anymore. sigh. Trying to get through the first ending, I can do emma but after....

For special attacks, generally the whirlwind slash is great as is ichimongi double. the first can be used to cheese some enemies and the second is great for posture destruction.
Firecrackers are really good on some enemies, + whirlwind you can nuke health to get rid of infinite stamina. oil+fire is good for some enemies. the lilac umbrella for the ethereal attacks.

My first playthrough I ended up using the Mist Raven Feathers, Spear, and Axe as my main prosthetic, did use Firecrackers in a few fights as well. For Special attacks I used Ichimonji Double and High Monk for the most part. Early game I used Ichimonji and Whirlwind.

I actually forgot about the fireworks. I've found them particularly effective vs. mini-bosses or at least any enemy you defeat via damage rather than stamina. If nothing else, they at least give you some breathing room to get away and heal.

Yea I would always forget about them as well because I mainly focused on the prosthetic that I upgraded, but I remember using them in the Gyoubu fight and the Blazing Bull fight maybe another one with an animal involved.

Mortal Blade, Ichimonji: Double and Firecrackers are probably the best prosthetics...the Malcontent whistle upgrade is very useful against Demon of Hatred during his 3rd phase...although in my 2nd run I barely needed to use any of them...it's more satisfying beating the bosses with deflections and straight attacks vs cheesing them...

I think I'm mainly just trying to spice things up. With only 1 weapon and parry/dodge, you're basically doing the same things over and over. It's getting a little stale even when you're in a flow and playing well. I really miss weapon variety.

I think the most OP combo is Ichimonji Double with Mist Raven since you can start right into Ichimonji right out of the teleport. Also using Mist Raven+High Monk from behind on some mini bosses with one health bar could break their posture completely, not sure how it works post patch though.
I felt the spear was the most versatile prosthetic though, I used it so much.

I think my next playthrough I'll focus on the lower half of the prosthetic tree, I also want to get some latent skills in 2nd playthrough since I skipped out on a lot of the bonuses because I wanted to try different attacks out on the first playthrough. I'll probably start on it in 2-3 weeks after this MHW event is over.

I'm only like 3 hours into Sekiro still, but that's been my main complaint/con so far. The variety of gear and ways to create a build in the Soulsborne games is SO fun and is a major part of the enjoyment for me, and Sekiro pretty much strips that out entirely.

Not sure how many hours I've put in, but I'm making my return Ashina castle right now. I like the game. A lot even. I just think it has way less depth than the previous games. It allows them to make things a little more directed I suppose, but it comes at the expense of variety. In watching some strategic videos online, it feels like the main difference in approaches comes down to exploiting specific situations. It's not like DS where a guy with two giant swords and no clothes fights a totally different way from a sorcerer in platemail.
On the other side of the coin, there's something to be said for a more directed experience and approach, too. It allows them to dial things in as intended much easier. Plus, this game might be unfairly saddled by the Soulsborne games. While it kinda is one, it also kinda isn't. It's tough to judge it without thinking of them, but that probably isn't fair.

EDIT:
One thing I will say is that I don’t feel it’s significantly better than Nioh. It might be a better game (I’m not sure), but part of that has to do with Nioh’s over-use of assets. If they had dialed back on re-using the same stages/enemies and simply shortened the game a hair, Nioh was a pretty fantastic game. I prefer Nioh’s combat to Sekiro’s. The lack of weapon variety felt sparse compared to Dark Souls, but compared to Sekiro it’s like the possibilities are endless. I think the plot is more up my alley, too. From’s esoteric storylines are fine for what they are, but in this case I think something more straightforward works better. Thing is, by the end of Nioh you’d fought the same enemies hundreds of times. You’d also played the same levels repeatedly and fought the same bosses in varying environments again and again. For every great new map there were 2-3 repeated ones. Team Ninja phoned some things in that could have made Nioh a classic. Maybe these next couple areas will make me feel differently about Sekiro, too. I feel like I’m on the back end of things and nothing has changed for a while, though.

I felt the same when I started, but it will probably grow on you, definitely give it time. Sekiro ended up being my favorite From Software game since the original Dark Souls (I think, but time will tell).
