Julian Assange Arrested

This^^^. If its important enough to leak its important enough to go to jail for. Or be sued for breaching whatever contract or NDA you signed. Although not murdered. Quit blaming Assuage because you don't want leakers punished because you don't want your pet leaker punished.

I actually don't understand this concept at all.

See, I do blame the leakers, and if Assange had anything to do with the thefts of Secrets, I blame him as well.

But this idea that someone doesn't want their favorite leaker punished so they want to put the blame on Assange? That's irrational to me, it's not something I could mentally do.

Of course, many people do things I that I find completely irrational, so there's that :D

Assange hasn't violated any law. According the US Supreme Court, which ruled against the US government regarding the Pentagon Papers, a media organization is allowed to publish classified US military documents for the purpose of informing the public:

You saved me 20 minutes by writing this up yourself. Well done brother...

Sold out to the highest bidder , Oz should be just as ashamed as the UK for letting this happen.

He did need to get out of the embassy as obviously his health was deteriorating , but this was not the way.

Sad day for whistle blowers.
Whistler blower? SMH. The guy was anything but. Surgically timing and coordinating info dumps to suit his own agenda and biases - being able to pull puppet strings in his own way - goes far beyond whistle blowing.

Snowden was a whistleblower. Assange is a wannabe power broker. Some of the things he's done I actually agreed with, but when you see him interviewed he's just a complete ornery and arrogant shithead - there is no humility or decency or actually believing he was doing something for a greater good. He got off on the idea that he could change outcomes.

Looks like it's a conspiracy charge. Probably not that hard to prove depending on what info they still have left over from the Manning investigation. It sounds like they are alleging that Assange gave Manning the tool specifically to crack the passwords to get the data that Manning stole. If they can prove that, he's probably toast regardless of your opinion of him. It's also significantly different than just posting info on a web site like some here are alleging.

Yeah hes screwed.

Whats kind of funny is, had he faced up to the music 7 years ago, his prison sentence would be over already. Which makes me think he ran because they are going to hit him with multiple counts.

Not to mention, Manning is getting him/herself into hot water again by refusing to testify.

I'm reading it was more for violations of "Daily Life Protocols"

Meaning the dude didn't shower enough or drop a courtesy flush...

I wonder if they put that on Wikileaks...

I had a hunch there was something "fishy" about this dude.

This whole thing keeps getting stranger and stranger...

I can't wait for the Netflix "real crime" documentary on this. Its going to be amazing. Hacking, Government cover-ups, transgenders, court room drama, hunger strikes... about the only thing that's missing is a love affair between Manning and Assange. Im gonna need an extra large bowl of popcorn for this one:woot:

He got his hands on US DOD passwords that aided the leak, so if that's the case, then he's in big big trouble.

Yea, the "conspiracy to commit computer intrusion" charge will work to get him extradited and into US Custody. The charges from the "other shoe", they are going to really hurt. Espionage is no joke when it comes to potential sentencing and can result in capitol punishment. Espionage can be committed by a company, and there is more to it you can read on the wiki for yourself.

Realistically, he's looking at a 5 to 10 year hit at Club Fed. Manning was the real "criminal."

Realistically, unless you and I and others are lacking key information.

So he not only encourage Manning, he is accused of conspiring and aiding him. Again, espionage is a serious charge, a charge that can carry the death penalty. The US has only charged him with computer intrusion so far, but that doesn't mean more charges won't follow. Let's see, what are the charges in the wikileaks case, the one Manning refuses to testify on, and is in jail on a contempt charge for? Oh yes, it's espionage. The Grand Jury is investigation weather or not it is reasonable to charge Wikileaks, and potentially Julian Assange with Espionage.

This isn't about a media outlet publishing leaked US Secrets. This is about a media outlet conspiring with, assisting, and possibly even inciting a member of the military to commit the crime.

Time will tell.

I don't understand the same people that call Edward Snoden or Chelsea Manning Stunning and Brave and turn around and dump on Assuage. There ARE a ton of those. Or Seth Rich from the other side. Because you hold them both in disregard doesn't mean others do too. I'd say it's around 50-50, give or take, that have the double standard vs those that don't.

A lot of people that enjoyed Bush II taking the heat over Iraq related leaks turned on Assuage the minute he hurt a Democrat., like pivoting on a dime.

The key thing is without them, the will to go after Assuage probably goes away.

How about Assange and Pamela Anderson? His frequent visitor? Lol

The Jury is out on weather or not he is a legitimate media organization & also to which means did he obtain the information.

If CNN and Fox can be called legitimate, anyone can. I doubt they will be able to successfully challenge the "legitimacy" of the title "journalist" or whether wiki leaks counts as a legitimate news organization. Like how Assange and Wiki Leaks do things or not, (and I don't), at least so far, their reporting has all been true.

If they really want to destroy Assange, they should ignore him.

I think the craziest thing about this story is that Julian Asssange is only 43.... Dude looks like he's. 70...

View attachment 154180
He's 47, but if you compare that picture to just 2 or 3 years ago, it seems like he's had some mental health issues (likely depression) and that definitely fits in with the complaints the embassy had been making about him. He screwed up. If he'd turned himself in 4 or 5 years ago, I'm not sure that he would have been convicted, but he'd likely be out of jail by now. Instead, he spent 7 years under (self imposed) house arrest and now will likely get 5 more years. It'd be more if there's a case to be made from 2016, but unless he broke another law like he did with Manning, that'd become a first amendment issue and much as I dislike what that organization did, gotta tread lightly where the first amendment is concerned.

I can't say, I must admit, although I may take issue with what I see as uninformed opinions, I don't actually track their opinions on multiple issues and perform a pew study on them.

I don't doubt that there are people that fit the picture you are painting. And I don't mind telling you how I see these three individuals.

I see Chelsea Manning as a troubled person, that's her problem, I don't care. But Pvt. Manning did violate the trust put in him, a trust that I myself must keep. So I have an issue with that and think that his trial, conviction, and sentence were all earned and proper. I also think that others are more deserving of Presidential Pardon and that that pardon came way too quickly. But once her sentence was commuted, the decision is made, I don't hold a grudge. That being said, the opportunity to do what is right is again before this person and again I think this person has poor judgement and will again earn harsh treatment.

I see Edward Snowden as a fake and a liar. A person who has always needed to be "special", cheated his way into something he was unfit for, was given trust and spit on it for his own benefit. It's why I believe he will never return to the USA unless he thinks he has a sympathetic ear to cry too. We don't hear him talking about returning now because he knows he can't pull one over on Trump, and of course because he knows he's actually guilty of the crimes he committed. Besides, the Russians won't let him anyway. I think he will die in Russia.

And Julian Assange, I don't know if he is guilty or not. I do know that he is wanted on charges in more than one country. How does a man claim to stand for freedom and justice, and then do everything possible to avoid facing his accusers in an open court?

You know, Snowden in Russia, Assange hiding in an embassy, and people claiming that they won't be given a fair trial, that they will be railroaded or even killed. But Chelsea Manning is tried, sentenced to 35 years, and within 4 years her sentence commuted, and while in prison the government helps pay for elective surgeries. Doesn't this stand in stark counterpoint to their fears of unjust treatment? Chelsea Manning didn't get a bullet behind the ear, a one-way trip to a Gulag, or anything of the sort and she was found guilty of crimes of espionage, serious freaking capitol punishment sentences, death was a possibility.

You might think I have high standards. But if you know where I'm coming from then you understand why. I have held a Top Secret security clearance since 1981. I think that's public knowledge now, since the OPM Leak. But it's not a secret anyway, hell it's on my resume. The interesting thing about all those secrets is, they are really pretty boring. Keeping that clearance is a major pain in the ass. Ask anyone that has one, they'll tell you the same. But it is also a commitment and after living up to my end of that commitment for so long I think you can understand why I might hold some disdain for any who would easily discard it.

So Chelsea Manning did wrong, but that person had issues, her leaders failed to properly deal with them, the result was going to be bad in whatever form it took. That soldier was going to break in some way, the only question was how, to what effect.

Snowden should never have been granted a clearance. He never should have been trusted to begin with. The greed of USIS, the company that failed at doing a proper security background investigation, failed to identify that this man had problems and should not have been granted access to classified materials. We know the result of this just like we know the result of USIS failing to identify that the Naval Yard shooter had mental issues. USIS doesn't have that contract anymore, some people have lost their lives. It doesn't seem very equal does it?

The reaction to Snowden was a little bad, but the reaction to people that idolize him, and to groups and businesses that have fed off of him has been far worse. The government, in fear or "new Snowdens", has reacted not by just tightening up on background investigations, but by adoption an Orwellian posture towards their "trusted workforce". In other words, they are not so trusting any more. That means the workforce doesn't feel trusted and the entire integrity thing is dissolving. People are sneaking classified documents out of their workplace in their panties for fucks sake. It's an erosion of the glue that has held it all together for decades.

As they say "Mistakes were made"

Sorry for the book, I hope it was worth your time to read.

Lol this is the most ignorant comment ever, if they wanted to sell out they could have done that a long time ago, the reality is that julian ultimately met his demise because he is a neck beard. I love this story because it goes to show you that social interactions are more important than anything else.

This is HardForums TECH NEWS, not BBC.

It is not exclusively tech news, it crosses over into politics and freedom of speech. However, it is most certainly tech news. The topics include surveillance, hacking, a website, encryption, and even Bitcoin - since crypto is the only way Wikileaks could accept donations. Your claim is like saying the Snowden revelations weren't tech news, when that's what the story truly is at its core.

Assange hasn't violated any law. According the US Supreme Court...

I don't think Assange can hide behind 'journalism' protections for two main reasons:
- After the timed document dumps Assange/WIkileaks continued to advance a particular agenda by bluffing and claiming there were more documents coming and advancing conspiracy theories. Real journalistic organizations don't behave like that. I think it crosses the line from free speech to public disorder, and the Supreme Court has previously ruled that speech which creates danger by encouraging criminal actions (like, say, storming a pizza parlour to find supposed secret hostages) is not constitutionally protected speech.

- There's evidence that Assange actively assisted with cracking passwords to steal US data, rather than simply passing information along.

Assange is a hero. He's a voice for free speech and truth in a world full of corruption and destruction.

Would you still feel that way if instead of helping the gop/trump campaign by selectively releasing damaging material for the democrats, he helped the dems by only releasing damaging material about the gop?..... Because a real 'voice of free speech and truth in a world full of corruption and destruction' wouldn't be selectively releasing material to only hurt one party. That makes him a partisan hack, not a hero or whistleblower/journalist, and yes I would still say that if he was targeting the GOP instead. If you want to expose corruption, expose it all, not just the party you dislike.

So guys, I want to say something here about the politics thing and you could call this "exploratory side discussion". But since the discussion is going in this direction, I think I'll post it and hopefully it'll be a good thing and not be seen as a problem.

The [H] frequently posts news that is pretty much equal parts tech and politics. The prohibition on posting political comments is not really well defined and I have tried to understand exactly what is and isn't the problem. I think it comes down like this;

I think there is a line. I think if you start naming parties, or alignments like left and right, then I think you are probably crossing that line. In short, naming names, pointing fingers, being decisive, that's not where the [H] wants us to go.

Like I said, just saying the word politics, that's a huge broad brush. But if I am right, then the real issue is not politics or things political. It decisiveness and if you start playing with the whole polarizing part of things, then I believe this is were trouble starts and I think, if I understand correctly, is where we are supposed to back off.

Now please do not mistaken my intent. I'm just a guest like any other and I want to behave myself as a guest. I am not challenging [H] policy. All I am trying to do is put forth my best interpretation of what the [H] does not want happening.

I could be wrong. But in the end, I try and remember that I am a guest and as such, if I wish to remain a welcome guest, I must be willing to extend deference to my hosts no matter how right I believe that I am.

Now, since I am guilty of potentially sidetracking this, I'll ask that anyone who wishes to talk about my comment, please just PM me so we can return this thread to it's regularly scheduled purpose.

The "Pentagon Papers" Lawyers think he has a strong case as a journalist.

The "Pentagon Papers" Lawyers think he has a strong case as a journalist.

Again, this is immaterial. The 1st Amendment is not a defense against espionage charges. They are saying that he gained access to passwords and provided material assistance to Manning aiding him, and possibly even inciting him to access Secret Information that the soldier was not authorized to access. This is not a free speech or freedom of the press issue. This is a breaking and entering thing.

Do you see the difference?

You sir are 200% correct. no way trump even thinks about running if this guy dosen't exist.

Sad day. Julian did nothing wrong, imo,he helped elect Trump,in large part.
ikr? how could he help this repabate? throw him in jail and throw away the key.

I hope he's released with no charges, just to stop Hillary from doing that annoying pants-suit happy dance
