1080ti to a rx580? Am I crazy?

Doesn't it look bad when not gaming at native resolution?

Actually besides the RX 580s great price to performance, the other crazy thing is how far ahead nvidia is with power consumption. These are two cards that are miles apart in performance yet the power consumption is similar--the 1080 Ti is basically the same as AIB RX 580s!

Just snagged the Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 for my new rig since it was $199 (w/ two free games that I may offload to make it a better deal)
( most likely not popular among the Nvidia fans since I didn't opt for the higher priced GTX 1660 :D )

Its reason i bought Radeon VII, 3 free games, and ive never bought new gpu same day they come out, Its amazing how freesync works on these amd cards. And tweakable they are

You sure he's kidding? Lol.

My GTX 1070 plays... idle desktop? I haven't played a game in months. I don't suspect I'll change this GPU until it either dies, or I find a game I really love that I just cannot play with good frames with this card. It'll do me for a while I think!

I stand corrected. Apparently there are many with more $$ then brains. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ive always known that you don't have to pay a lot for a graphics card to get decent performance.

Since 1997, I have never paid more than $330 for a graphics card, because I've never been nuts about chasing super higher resolutions (1280x960 CRT, then 1080p LCD), and I've never cared much for insane frame rates (45fps s is acceptable in most offline shooters, and I can''t tell the difference of anything above 75fps online).

Honestly the FPS games at 1080p at 144 hz don’t look bad to me.

But I’m also not looking to crank all the eye candy.

Now when I’m playing non FPS single player games, I play 1440p with as much eye candy on as I can.

If I was trying to get 144hz out of the 580 at 1440p, I’d have a problem.

Honestly I sold my 1070 a few months ago. I was perfectly happy with it though. It played everything fine for me.

I was just feeling the upgrade itch so I sold it for the 1080ti.

My 2 cents. Still gaming on a 1080ti. I normally upgrade video cards every year but the 20 series was way overpriced. Pretty happy with my 1080ti for gaming at 1440p.

I know you are kidding, but many do. That is why the OP comments have merit.

I'm actually not. I thought I was going to play all sorts of games on my new rig but I couldn't get into anything. I would play the game for like 15 minutes and end up back on DOTA. I've bought Forza 7, PUBG, Wolfenstein, GTAV, Monster Hunter, ARK, Civ 6 (played a good 500 hours on Civ 5) and those free games that came with my RTX2080 Ti which died so I returned it but I still got to keep the games. It could be that all my friends only play DOTA. But building the system and tinkering it is probably where I have the most fun. Expensive lesson but now I know lol. I'll probably just buy entry-level or mid-grade stuff next round and overclock the crap out of it. Maybe I'm just getting old who knows.

Yea I popped the 1080ti back in for now.

Obv has much higher frame rates. Honestly I think the 20 series prices are making people like me consider these crazy things lol.

If AMD became competitive this year on the higher end...

It’s kind of like getting back to my roots of overclocking. Do you remember when the overclocking forums were actually about overclocking?

When I bought the 1070 I was gaming quite exclusively on the PC. As of the last 6 months I've not had a whole lot of time to do that, wasn't aware buying a card what 2 years ago, using it well, then having it sit idle for a while meant I had no brains?

Depending on type of insurance you have, call your doctor and say you are going crazy in your head and ask to see them in person.
Bring the graphic cards to the appointment. I'd recommend printing out a benchmark chart and then discuss your doctor the problem and if your doctor doesn't help that much then ask for a specialist and MRI scan of your brain. Post back your results and we will try to help.

system specs:
2700x
Gigabyte x470
Samsung 970 Pro nvme ssd
Prison E12 controlled 1Tb nvme (game drive)
32gb (4x8) ddr4 3200 CL15 ram
144hz 1440p 27” monitor

So I sold my 1070. Bought a 1080ti. Started back gaming playing Apex, Overwatch and a few other FPS titles.

I was impressed. And then I bought a rx580 from a forum member here to put in my sons build. He plays Apex on it and is very happy with it.

Then I decide hmm... I’m going to throw it in my system and see how big of a noticeable difference this is compared to my 1080ti...

Now I game with FPS titles at 1080p max refresh. Even if that means turning things down like shadows etc that do not matter when I’m in a high paced match.

And guess what? By only turning a few settings down on the games, I am getting well over 100 FPS at 1080p on the 580 with my setup. Holy crap.

I have been so afraid of touching “lower end” or mid tier cards. I’ve bought mostly 1070ti -1080ti variants of the last 5 or 6 nvidia generations! Mostly because AMD wasn’t very competitive.

And when I do want to play a 1440p single player title, I can crank the eye candy it’s with freesync it’s still very very playable.

I think I was a performance and number whore from reading benches on review sites....

In short, sometimes it’s ok to try something different. I am happy with this setup for now. I may sell the 1080ti, put that money in savings and see what happens next with AMD.

It wasn’t about raw performance. It was about value and what my eye sees. Money isn’t really an issue, I could spend until my e-peen exploded. But I want value for my $.

Am I nuts?

It doesn't make sense to make such a big downgrade in your case.

The rest of your system is top end when it comes to processor, ram and storage. Putting a 100 dollar videocard in that type of system seems like a shame.

The RX 580 is so underpriced at the moment because the market is flooded with post mining cards.

At 500 dollars for a GTX 1080 ti, you have a very strong card for the dollar with that level of performance. Don't forget the GTX 1080 ti can use freesync as well.

As far as something competitive and 500 dollars coming from AMD or Nvidia, that won't be for a while in AMD case.

AMD GPU's are so reliant on memory bandwidth that something with high enough bandwidth to compete with Nvidia needs HBM2 and 4 stacks of it. This means something around gtx 1080 ti at the moment even with 7nm won't be possible without a high price as Radeon VII shows.

AMD is probably targeting gtx 1080 level or Vega level for Navi, maybe a touch slower because they will be limited to a 256bit bus and DDR6 and 440gb/s of bandwidth.

As we have seen lately, AMD doesn't outright value price their GPU's when they have a strong product, heck even disappointing ones as of late. Look at any of their recent releases and they have launched cards with worse price to performance than the competition recently(radeon VII and RX 590, Vega). The rx 590 was particularly baffling since a rebadge or refresh coming it at a higher MSRP that the original product which came out 32 months earlier is greedy to say the least.

In short, AMD track record as of late has been disappointing so don't bet on your GTX 1080 ti seriously depreciating based on some overly optimistic Navi rumors which have been largely been proven false. Considering how much they have rung out of GCN already, I don't expect anything revolutionary to come from Navi since most of the potential has been extracted from it. The last card to improve price to performance for consumers at launch from AMD was the 290x/290. Polaris price/performance arose from the price/performance of the gtx 1070.

I don't expect the GTX 1080 ti to seriously drop in price until Nvidia releases their 7nm product which has been the case lately. This is because when Nvidia launches their cards, prices actually fall. Look at the impact of maxwell, pascal and to a lesser extent, turing.

AMD releases card, they price their cards the same as Nvidia for the price/performance.

I like the premise of this thread. I have a 1050Ti at the moment and though I hardly game (I finally upgraded this week from an i5 2500 to Ryzen 5 1600) - I am considering buying a used 580 and selling the 1050ti. I reckon the upgrade will cost me less than $50 and might be well worth the price. Thoughts?

I think that's a drastic improvement and for $50 I would say it's worth it.

Exactly, I ended up switching back to a lower res display as the price to drive a 4K TV as a computer monitor has gotten silly. I would probably argue that the experience I had playing through AC: Odyssey is smoother on my 1080p 144Hz monitor with a RX580 vs. my 4K TV with my 1080Ti. This is coming from someone who would have upgraded from to a 2080Ti if it was $800 vs. $1200. At the $800 price point, I didn't see an upgrade from my 1080Ti.

The other way to look at it is the 1080Ti price will drop more than the RX580. Even when Navi launches, a RX580 will be a $75 card. The 1080Ti will be a $350 card within a year I'd think depending on Navi and 7nm Nvidia. I've upgraded many family members to used RX580's and nobody has been disappointed.

The only reason I have the Radeon VII in my sig is because I got a good deal on it at $150 under retail otherwise I'd still be screwing around with an 8GB RX580. A good halfway point between what you have now and the 1080Ti is the Vega 56. I picked one up for $200 on ebay. Pretty good bang for the buck at $200.
