do it, in my opinion it's the best one of the series. there's a lot that carried over to BL2 but there's also a lot of other dumb things that were added to BL2 that you'll realize made no sense being in the game after playing the first one.

also thanks OP'er. i lost my discs years ago for BL1 and wanted to replay it again.

Originally had it on Xbox 360 and only bought BL2 for PC. Always passed up the sales on it because I hated the Xbox version and didn't want to replay on PC. After playing this remaster I'm glad I bought again!

The stuff that was added to BL2... guess I need to play through this again and do BL2 after because I don't even realize.

There was a reddit thread about some upgrade. If you had BL GOTY in your steam library, there was some some of new texture thing that got pushed on April2. Not sure if this gets you free graphics upgrade or not but it may be worth looking into.

my biggest gripe is that they centralized the missions at the beginning in that town, having to go back there constantly and even in the middle of story line missions due to leveling up multiple times where your weapons become completely useless by the time you get to the end of the mission. in BL 1 your reward weapons in the crates as you go through and finish mission bosses progressively get better and better with your levels so you can go off and do what ever missions you want in what ever order you want.

yeah BL1, 2 and pre-qual got the 4k/HD texture pack upgrade which makes a world of difference especially BL1 and 2. can't comment on the pre-qual because i won't play through that one again, didn't like the game compared to the other two. you just need to select it in the store/DLC section and download it. BL2's was 7.9GB, not sure on the size for BL1.

Has anyone done benchmarks of the HD texture pack? The GTX 760 was fine with BL1 and even BL2 but recent games laugh at 2 gb of vram and generally require turning textures down a bunch.

First we have to establish how to run this test. As I understand, the 4K textures replace the "high" textures so I am not sure we can run one and then switch to the default "high" textures without uninstalling the texture pack.

On a side note, BL2 runs slower for me than I remember it did years ago so I think maybe the new textures are causing it to slowdown. On high, I've seen the FPS dip lower than my 1080p/75hz monitor can dish out. (using 3770/16GB/RX480)

I'd be interested too. This game does not have a built in benchmark that I know. (and built in benchmarks are the only benchmarks I know how to run).

Do these games have an adjustable FoV? What about that vomit inducing head Bob like HL2 did?

There are several things I like better about BL1 than BL2. Assault rifles, for example, were pretty awesome in BL1 and in general suck (with a handful of exceptions) in BL2. SMGs and rocket launchers seem to be overpowered in BL2. The scaling in BL2 is pretty out of control, too. If you got a really good weapon in BL1 you could use if for a while, like 10 or maybe 20 levels. Sometimes even more. In BL2 the stats scale much more radically, so any old average level 40 white weapon is going to be WAY superior to the best level 30 weapon in the game. You can't really keep any equipment for long until you reach the end game.

Other things I like more in BL1 include the looting - there were more gun cases and most contained actual guns. In BL2 there are way fewer cases and too many have grenade mods, shields or class mods in them. The loot I use in BL2 comes from either drops from kills, quest rewards or the gold chest in Sanctuary. I rarely to never get anything good out of a chest. It is lame and takes all the joy out of opening chests.

I also dislike the smaller backpack size in BL2.

It is not all bad, though. BL2 has a way better travel system. There is a fast travel in every map, so repeat visits are much faster than getting there the first time. Slogging around Dr. Ned's Island was a chore and made that DLC drag a little, and farming Ajax or Crawmerax requires a lot of time wasted driving. So that's a definite improvement. Having a cross-character transfer system is nice, too. I think all four characters are better balanced in BL2 as well. When someone plays as Lilith in BL1 it is pretty lame to constantly play catch-up to her and find that much of the work is done by the time you get to where you need to be. Finally, I like being about to move a little while in fight for your life. You can go to a co-op partner that is in cover if you're close enough.

To your first paragraph, that is largely because BL2 has a fast travel system that is linked to every map. This makes bouncing to Sanctuary and then back to other locations far easier than backtracking was in BL1. Without a fast travel to every map, BL1 had to be designed in a more linear way, and when you do backtrack it is a royal pain (general Knox and Dr. Ned DLCs suffer badly from this issue). I much prefer the BL2 method. However, that is a valid point about the loot. I'm hoping BL3 fixes this problem. It is so disappointing to open a chest after a mini-boss or boss battle only to find loot that's way worse than what I currently have. Not to mention the scarcity of chests while getting to those points. The worst is opening a chest to find not-guns inside. I use four guns at a time, and only one grenade.

For that matter, the gun vending machines in BL2 are utterly useless. I used to find good guns in the BL1 machines every now and then. In BL2 it basically can't happen.

I bought a copy of BL2 (newegg) for a friend. Last night was the first time I've played coop in many many years. I bought him GOTY but I only have the regular version. There were no compatibility issues.
