Which generation of gamer are you?

Core Gen X started with grandpa's Atari 2600, my buddy's Colecovision and my first console, Vectrex!

I don't understand the picture. I was born in the late 80's, but I started gaming pretty early. My first gaming experiences were on a Commodore 64 and a DOS/Windows 3.1 PC. The first video game console my parents bought was a NES, but really I only played Mario on it, even back then I preferred PC games. SNES and Game Boy opened me up a little bit more to console game, and PS1 was the first system where I would save up to buy my own video games and had what I would consider a collection. I don't understand the "peak" part though... I don't think I have peaked. So... you tell me what that means...

From your explanation sounds like you peaked at the PS1 even if it is more of a moleheap iso a mountein.

Early millennial here. 1982

nes with the duck hunt gun > snes > psx (late to the party here) > pc

Have not had a new console since I went to pc in the mid 90s

Core gen x to start but late gen x is probably the most nostalgic pieces of gaming gear for me. I still remember walking down to my uncles apartment (I lived just above) and seeing Kung Fu being played on the original NES.

Born in 81, grew up on the NES. Never had SNES, PS, Dreamcast, etc... but I did play a lot of SNES, PS and Dreamcast when visiting friends.

I really got back into gaming when PS2 came out... So there was a big gap between NES and PS2 where I didn't have any console.

Got into PC Gaming when the original Far Cry came out and my friend gave me his old 4400ti which I played on a Pentium 4 (That was like 1 year).

Bought a PS3 a year after it came out and got my first of gaming PC in 2009 (which my parents still use) and been gaming since.

In short, I don't really identify with any particular generation as I've been in and out of it but last 10 years have been steady :)

Late Gen-X here. Born in 83 I played alot of the NES and gameboy. Played a ton of DOS games on my parents PC before that. I actually had to push my parents to buy our new computers (didn't have alot of money back then). My peak gaming was in the mid-late 90s with online gaming. Still play Xobx one once and a while with my son. I game on my PC all the time when the kids are all in bed.

Core Gen X here. Atari and Intellivison growing up and moved on to a TRS 80 in College. from there it was straight to the PC Master Race. My kids on the other hand are Early Zoomers.

I lived right behind an arcade, any time I can get up a pinball arcade or classic arcade I will do so. Quarter stacking, so good, taking a whole new turn in the neighborhood when Mortal Kombat was released.

Blew a lot of quarters on Street Figher 2 and 3... loved challenging strangers in the arcade having people watch and wait their turn...

X-men dual screen was pretty cool too and After Burner

Heck yea! I used to ride my bike to the bowling alley just to play Street Fighter, It was a long ride but oh so worth it.

Hate to derail, but seriously, since when were millennials born before the new millennium?
I sense this chart is broken.
Also I must have been born to a poor family, because I grew up on NES and was born mid 80's. I reject the label "millennial" however.

Late X. NES was my first, but that was because it was in my house before I was born!

Early to Core-X ('77)

The first system I played (or remember playing at least) was the Bally Astrocade with the pistol-grip controllers. That was actually a really cool system. I was only about 3ish at the time, but my parents had one, and my dad's friend had one, and I played the hell out of Wizard of Wor, Star Castle, and a few other space games. Then we owned most major consoles off an on over the years. I was usually a little late on each console generation, because my parents leaned heavily toward computers. So they got us a C64, Amiga, various PCs (well my dad and I built the PCs). Usually built the PCs from scraps, though occasionally we'd get something cool like a Soundblaster, or an Orchid Fahrenheit 1280 or something. I would eventually get the consoles after a couple of years. (2600, SMS, NES, GB, Lynx, Genesis, SNES, TurboGrafx 16, but usually had to save my own money for those). When the PS1, Saturn, and N64 each came out, I had a job at that point, and bought each one as it became available. I've owned everything since then in one form or another including the Wii-U which is one of my favorites (or my kids do in the case of the XBOne and PS4, as I have no interest in those...) My latest toy is the Switch. Supplementary to my sizable PC collection of course :D )

There are only a small handful of systems I haven't owned at some point, including the 3DO, Odyssey, Jaguar, and many of those weird paddle based multi-game systems that came out late 70s early 80s.

I was born in '84 and I'm early millennial. Started gaming when my parents bought me a Sega console.

Early millennial here. Had an NES, but the SNES released a few months after I got one. First PC was a 486DX2 running Windows 3.1.

Late Gen X. Atari 2600 (~age 4-5?) > C64/128 > NES, SMS > SNES, Genesis > Amiga > 386DX...

Not sure what my "peak" was, but there were certainly blocks of time where I wasn't gaming at all due to school, sports commitments, being a poor grad student e.g. I totally missed the PS1, PS2 console and PC Gaming era (basically '96-'03)

Started atari 2600 and dos in the XT days.

Pretty much console until the mid 90s.

My family didn’t have a lot of money, but I guess I was pretty lucky growing up. A lot of friends and family were pretty tech/game/music/computer heavy. There was a lot of trading of hardware, software, musical instruments, etc. going on. I knew a ton of people with C64s, Amigas, and later PCs, so there was a lot of trading, copy parties, etc. My dad’s friend always had the latest PC gear, so we’d get stuff from him when he upgraded, or I’d trade games to his son for say a video card or something. We built everything a piece at a time in those days (XT-286-386-486). I had my first job when the Pentium 90 came out, and that’s when the [H] Syndrome set in. I’ve been wallowing in hardware ever since.

My dad traded one of his guitars for our 1541 drive for the C64. (as another example) I had a C64 until 1990. (And then more later...) That’s when I got my Amiga though when they dropped in price, and I believe we were at 286-16MHz with VGA and a Soundblaster on the PC side. The luck aspect was just knowing all these different people that were into similar things I guess. Kind of a tech trade network I suppose.

We got our first console (NES) in 1988 when I was 6, and it was all down hill from there. Then a gameboy for my brother and I to share, got a 386 in 1990 and my PC gaming life began. SNES and Genesis around the same time frame as well. I've had every generation of console or handheld since, except for the Saturn, the 32x or the sega cd.

I'm a core gen-ex'er. I had an IBM XT as well as an Atari 2600. Also...Zoomer is new to me.

I'd call my son a late zoomer, but our current consoles are Xbox 360, Wii U, and 2ds/New 3ds xl

My friend had a Magnavox system and we’d play a lot of pong. But my first was a apple ][+. Timex Sinclair anyone? The vectrex was pretty cool.

I still have the apple and a box full of disks. Captain Goodnight was a good one. :)

late gen x and to date :p i did own me a nes, and played all other consoles after. and got a pc when i was prety young. but sticking to the self-built pc as it's just far superior in everything. and where is the micro-transaction generation, that is probs the zoomer generation. only reason i got a ps4 for is the last of us, horizon zero dawn and red dead 2 prety much.

Late Gen X. We had an Atari 2600 but at the time arcades spoiled it for me and I didn't really play it. The first console I got into was the NES. We didn't have a computer at the time buy my best friend's dad had a pc. He never really let us play with it but we used to watch him play Pharaoh's Tomb and Dig Dug. It was the spark that lit the pc gaming fire in me.

Atari.
Then the Genesis then SNES... it wasn't until middle school did I get my first 500 Mhz celeron.

I'm am the original "OG" "original gamer"..... Atari 400 programmer for magazines in machine code in the late 80s, C64 and Amiga hardware expert from the 90s. Ran a multi line BBS on C64, Amiga and PC. You cant get much OG than that. Still build my ultimate PCs now and still game and Race online.

Early Gen X. First console was:

I remember instead of getting "highlights" for one year, i could wait a little and get this new magazine called nintendo power...

mid 90's I had this little egg shaped keychain toy Tamagotchi. It was like this little animal of some sort that hatched and you had to take care of it, so you carry it on you all day long and it would go off randomly when it's hungry or whatever the thing needed. At same time nintendo and onto win98, xp, win7 for life.

Late gen x, first system was an NES but we were a couple years late on that, then genesis, super nes, ps1 etc.

But we had a hand me down atari before that with a box of games. Tank was my game.

This is pretty cool, never saw it broke down into generations before. Never even thought about my own gaming evolution.

Atari 2600: 1981
Commodore 64: 1983
Commodore 128: 1987
Sega Genesis: ~1991
Sony PS1: 1995
Xbox: 2002
PC: 2008 and never looked back

I still like Combat (the Tank/Plane game). For some reason it still holds up (at least some of its modes do).

About 20 years ago or so (fuck, if I didn't feel the same as I did when I was 20, I would think I was getting old... :D ) a friend and I bought a huge box at a swap meet. A 2600, about six joysticks, a few paddle-sets, and about 30-40 games or so. We brought it to my parents' house, hooked it up to the big screen, and played four player Warlords for hours.

Well, at the time I believe it was a rear-projection type. It probably had antenna connections. These days I would just emulate. :D

Core Gen X here also. Grew up on Atari, and then the NES.
