Amazon plans to launch a constellation of 3,236 satellites into low Earth orbit in order to provide internet to “unserved and underserved communities around the world.”...Amazon is the latest in a string of companies with plans to use a network of thousands of satellites to offer broadband around the world...Unlike traditional satellite internet, these plans involve the use of satellites in low Earth orbit, which can be operated cheaply and with lower latencies...

This is a great step. Satellite isn't exactly ideal, but it is sorely needed.

HughesNet is using one giant satellite for my connection. EchoStar XIX is used for North American high speed.

The life span for these satellites are kinda short. Most of the dead ones were successfully deorbited.

Will be fine i guess, but if you are a gamer you better stick to landlines made of glass.
One of the cell providers here push really hard at the moment for wireless internet for the whole family, and i am thinking well the kid better not be a fortnite or whatever player.

Glad to live in a little country spammed in fiber cables and dosis 3.1 copper cables, if Danes bothered with faster internet connections we would leap huge up the rankings cuz most places you can get speeds much faster than what surveys indicate as the average here.
Our average are shy of 50 mbit, i haven't had that slow a connection in 10 years and i am currently on gigabit docis 3.1 cable.
It is rare i MAX out my DL speed of 121 megabytes / second.

Rural Americans are probably only going to get something this way.

As a rural American, Satellite is a supplement to DSL. 1mbps down (128 kb/s) and 96kbps (12 kb/s) is as good as I can get which is OK for some games...

Satellite can be used for RTS games at least. The other issue of Satellite is data limits. I pay for a 10GB data cap. As you can imagine, 10gb is used in about 1 day. So I usually have severely degraded speeds, but still faster than my DSL.

Might be time to move to Denmark!

Well we need skilled people, from doctors to simple trade skills.
Sadly our immigration rules are fracked up so many probably not going to bother with the hassle.

The "unlimited" 4G data connections here have a 1TB data cap, thats wayyyy past what i ever would need, i think i hover around 30 - 40 GB / mo on my cable.
5 G networks ( yes several of those ) will be going up soon.
I have 20 GB and 20 H talk on my phone plan, and i use about 2 H and 2 GB / mo

Here in SA where I live, the gubment and its dogs have their paws deep in the pockets of the telecomms companies. They were made honorary shareholders when democracy rolled around.

The end result is that its an artificially closed market, there are only four licenced telecomms companies, with further licencing controlled by the gubment. Collusion and price fixing is the order of the day.

This is turn has made our broadband rates to be the highest in the world; this has the knock on effect of reducing consumer appetite and thus the demand for broadband penetration lags.

Rural areas, if they're lucky, can get 3G and thats that. No DSL, no complimentary blow job, no fuck all.

Technically, there would be no reason why anyone here could not enjoy the fruits of this satlink internet, but just watch the government put the kibosh on it by banning it somehow.

I schmell luftw... err, a business opportunity...

Sud Africa sure have a unique set of circumstances, too bad its not better now.

We have our problem too in the old public but now long time privatized telecom, it is a colossus that have a negative effect on the market here for sure, but there are others of course, also more than 3.

Denmark is way behind when it comes to internet speeds compared to it's neighbors and size of the country.
TDC(Tele Danmark Communications)
Should never have been fully privatized in 1998 and sold to an American investment company. Worst part was the infrastructure, centrals and cobber lines were sold with it which made TDC a monopoly that stagnated development and internet speed for many years as no company could compete when they would not allow anyone accessing their centrals or lines till the government decided a new law against TDC was needed so they could not keep other companies from connecting to the centrals.
In the early 2000's there was already fiber lines in the ground and lots of it, but TDC decided it would cost too much money to upgrade the centrals to fiber and that the Danes did not need faster internet.. That decision kept their investors very happy.
I could tell you all the problems TDC and the investment companies that owned it has caused and still cost Denmark, but that would get incredible long and this is not the thread for it.
"In terms of rural next generation access Denmark performs poorly compared to the US or the rest of the EU." - This is kinda funny as Denmark is a tiny country and you really can't call anything "rural" there, besides the underground is soft so easy to lay down fiber.
Boasting about internet in Denmark is like boasting about how great Russia is at making cars.. Not that great.

I'm in Ireland...I have a 1gb connection at home.
Never thought I'd see the day

Now the router they provide is a massive bucket of horseshit

I'm anxious to see the results. I currently have 300/20 from Spectrum. Their 1 Gb plan is available to me, but upload is only like 35 up so it isn't worth the upgrade IMO. My other option is AT&T and last I checked, they maxed at 24 mbps or 40 mbps DOWN in my particular area at ridiculous prices, so it's a no go.

Low altitude satellites such as this will offer gigabitish connection at similar latency to landline. Elon Musk's Starlink prototypes that are in use now are obtaining 25ms, can't recall if he's released speed data, but I believe the proposal is over 500mb/s up/down.

Yeah it will be nice for rural areas, but more relavant to a lot of people I think this is the only way to break the land line monopolies a lot of areas have.

LTE has to an extent but typically has too low data of caps for most people. Hopefully the new satallite services do not.

This isn't for what some seem to think it's for.
If you have a reliable internet connection....this probably isn't aimed at you.
If you already purchase from Amazon frequently.....this probably isn't aimed at you.
If you can currently stream fake titties at 1080.....this probably isn't aimed at you.

They're trying to expand their customer base imo. Nothing more.

But here we got Freedom and Democracy flowing trough the wires and not communist governmental controlled bits...

Have they stated that's their intention? It makes sense, but I could easily see their intentions expanding.

Yes and no. They gave a bit of marketing nothing-speak.
I have no doubt you're right about their intentions expanding.

Could you please share some more data on how much you pay for these services. I'd like to know just how fucked are we here in the warmer but shitty parts of the continent.

I mean, I can get a gigabit for like a like 25 euro a month but Swedes had that a decade ago, and they probably make ~10 times as much money as I do writing the same code :(

My internet are 45 USD / mo and the phone plan are 15 USD
Gigabit on fiber are still silly expensive here 2 - 3 X of what the same cost in Sweden, for the 45 USD / mo i think i can get a 300 / 300 on fiber, but sadly no fiber to be had in this town.
Yeah salaries are high here, but it are usually offset by the high taxes we pay.
30 USD / h was i got in my last job as a skilled painter / machine worker, thats before taxes.

I can get, IIRC, 2Gbit & I don't bother, you know why?

It's consumer grade crap with data caps. I'd rather pay ~ 50% more and have static IPV4, Static IPV6, no service blockage, support that pops out next day if I have an issue, and NO DATA CAPS.

Don't care about download speed. Give me statics & no cap instead.

Blowing up a satellite is dangerous and irresponsible (if you're not US) but deploying tens of thousands (remember Musk's plan) is totally ok. What could possibly go wrong

This is like comparing a room with a bunch of glass bottles on the floor to a room with a smashed glass bottle on the floor; which would you rather navigate barefoot?

I agree but sadly the other 99.9% of the consumer base does not know or care about such things :(

They will when they get overage chargers and or it's "slow" ever friday night when they are trying to watch netflix.....

IMHO there are pretty much 3 tiers of internet:
Consumer (crap)
Consumer grade business (eg: comcast business, at&t business)
and "Tier 1" which is 10x the price but you get DIA & symmetric speeds.

I figure the consumer grade business is a good compromise.

The non symmetric speeds are just a limitation of cable and dsl technology. Most consumer fiber connections are symmetrical and offer gigabit up and down with no bandwidth limit.

I pay $90 a month for gigabit. I've had it for 3 years and there has been one outage.

There are some better fiber ISPs out there that only charge $65 a month for gigabit. And there is one in the city near me that has 10 gigabit but it's $300 a month.

I use Xfinity and say what you will about them, I pay under $60/month for 1TB @ 20MB/s takes 20+ minutes to download 40+ GB and I live in semi-rural America. Almost went with CenturyLink slow-mo internet but the tech couldn't find the live end of the cable from the street box to my property and said I needed to cut a 24" deep trench and then he would come back and lay the cable. As he was writing up the paperwork he looked up at the power pole on the fence line and said, "I think you have cable!" Sure enough, I did. Xfinity came out, direct buried a cable for me and all is well

I don't know why but reading the title of this thread immediately made me think of of the homefront trailer at this part.

Mesh net to have better control of their drone delivery system and probably to directly contact their iot devices to place orders when you run outta stuff

Are you saying all of this is not about control of the nearby cosmos and communications?

Well, Comcast injected code into customer's internet traffic. I look forward to seeing how Amazon takes that idea and runs with it.

yea, I would not want all my internet traffic going through Amazons satellites. If they dont already know too much about me, my traffic going through their satellites would surely get them there (Yes I know about VPNs, but I still dont trust amazon one bit)
