for my birthday my wife is wants to give me a new laptop since my old one is dying.
she is buddgetting around 500 bucks

- Im pretty brand agnostics (amd/intel - nvidia/amd))
- I dont need super long battery time its mostly just to carry around for weekend outings or when i got back to denmark to visit family
- Ethernet port is a pretty hi requirments( 1gb preffred)
- Wifif N or above should surfice
- NO DUAL grapphiccs possible (It fucks up FFXI)
- 1080P monitor or above owuld be prefferbable
- Around 15" size
- hdmi out would be nice for connecting to tv's
- 256GB storage space wil lbe fine ( Alternstive i have 256GB Sata SSD i could put in it)
- OS is not needed i will most likely install Windows 7 on it

What I currently have used my laptop for is
- handbrake encoding
- master of orion(dos)
- civilization 2
- FFXI ( 3+6 accounts at a time- my current laptop struggles hard here)

So even thoug its for games its not for triple AA super high ress games

I aprreciate any feedback on what to look for

Does it have to be new? You're not going to get much of a gaming laptop for $500.

Now refurb OTOH, is a different story. May require a little hunting but you get a whole lot more bang for the buck.

I'm with Burticus - you can get a decent laptop for $500 but it's way more difficult to find a "gaming" laptop in that price range.

I'd wager that's a 1050ti gpu at best, in a relatively chunky form factor if you want new. If possible, I'd definitely try to get a manufacturer's refurb since that will likely get you the most bang for the buck + warranty.

Here's one from Dell Outlet / Refurb

Currently im using a laptop with a 1st genration "i7 which jas i belvie 2 physsical cores with SMT
and its using built in GPU.

so even a 10650ti would be an awesome upgrade

Does not have to be new. certified refurbished would be fine

Edit: It seems I am wrong cheapest 1050ti laptop I can find is $699. Cheapest GTX 1050 is $599.

You may like this one: It is a refurbished unit with a quad core 8th gen Intel CPU with MX150 graphics (a bit better than AMD's 2500U APU grapphics I believe)

Intel 8250U Quad Core (8 thread?)
MX150 GPU
256gb SSD
8gb DDR4 (single or dual channel?)
15.6 inch 1080p screen (ips??)

Link

I'm pretty sure I have seen some sales for Intel based laptops paired with 1050ti GPUs for that $500-$600 range.

I will take a look and see if I can find any. Newegg usually has good deals on them

So I also bought an Acer Nitro 5, same cpu maybe but had a 1050ti and 256ssd, $550. Acer refurbished outlet on ebay. I did not see any of the exact same model in stock, you may have to check back from time to time. The 1050 isn't bad but for $50 more to get a 1050ti 4gb and a 256gb SSD boot drive, totally worth extra $50. The ram and HDD are very easy to access if you want more ram or put in another ssd. I put in an addition 500gb SSD ($50, microcenter) just for games. 8gb of ram is ok since the GPU has it's own 4gb. 16gb ddr4 2666 kits go for around $80-100.

Laptop has a great IPS 1080p screen and is a good gaming laptop. HDMI and real ethernet port are nice. It is big and chunky and heavy though, not a good travel laptop. In other words, it's fine when you get where you're going... but busting it out on a plane is going to be tricky. Thing is huge. It just BARELY fits into my laptop backpack that holds a Dell 15" work laptop with room to spare.

edit - almost forgot, the trackpad is lousy. You'll want to use a mouse... but then again if you're gaming, you're using a mouse anyway.

Looking into bencmhar the upgrade form 1050 to 1050ti seem rather big.
But where did you see that its only 50 bucks extra ?

man im tying to go thorugh all the laptops from acer and this one just seems to be a real gem..
If only i could squeeze in the 1050ti ( and maybe no storage unit) that would really set out as a clear winner

Yeah I bought one. It was $550 and I've seen them on the Acer refurb store since then. Also... ebay coupons come and go... The 1050 to 1050ti gap is real. 1050ti is a great 1080p gamer. I've only had to lower some settings here or there. I played BF1 on last trip 1080p smooth as silk. And I hook it up to TVs when I travel (or want to screw with something in my living room).

And mine has a internal (m.2 I assume) 256gb SSD and then the bay for another 2.5 drive which I added another SSD to.

Only downsides are girth and the touchpad.

Just keep checking the Acer store every now and then. I think people return them because they are so huge. Mine looked brand new.

Cool man, glad you scored one. You got a better deal than I did. Now go buy a SSD for your game drive.

I'm a big proponent of buying used when you're looking for best-bang-for-buck in a gaming laptop. They tend to have huge depreciation if the new gen of GPUs have come out and you can often find them still under warranty (laptop gamers are often a fickle bunch, myself included, and replace their kit often). If I had a $500 budget, I'd be looking at something lightly-used with similar specs to these:

i5 7300HQ or 8300H
GTX 1050
8GB RAM
128GB SSD + HDD
1080p IPS screen

If you want to go back further, you could shoot for something with a GTX 960 which will be 5-10% faster than a GTX 1050 (about inline with a 1050 ti), but unlikely that will still be under warranty.

The above will run those applications you listed easily.

wow it is very cheap

Some great contributions to the forum so far. Pray tell, what is "it"? Keep working your way up to that For Sale/For Trade post limit - you can do it!

now im getting susepcis that i hit a scam sale.

The seller has no reveiws what so ever. I think he stole the layout for his posting.
Delivery is also 21-41 days which seems weird

Oh wait, when I clicked on your link it brought up one from the Acer store. Clicking a little further, is this the one you bought from? If so I'd try to cancel immediately. NEVER EVER buy from a zero feedback seller. Also the location says China, this is never good.

Did you already pay with Paypal? Request a refund immediately.

Does the laptop have to be new?

Last week I just bought on the bay for $500 + $25 shipping a Dell 7567.

It's like a year old and only had one owner.

Specs:

15.6 IPS 1080P Screen

256GB NVME SSD

Another empty HDD bay which I plan on adding a 1TB SSD in the future

2 slots of RAM, one which is taken by a 8GB stick (plan on adding another 8GB later)

i5-7300HQ 4 quad processor, 2.5GHz - 3.5 Ghz

1050ti 4 GB

This laptop is like a deal of the century, I've been looking on ebay for weeks trying to find the best bang for buck, it doesn't get any better than the 7567. Even a POS laptop used is at least $300.
