HP has announced its latest virtual reality headset which is based on Window Mixed Reality (WMR.) The HP Reverb Virtual Reality Headset -- Professional Edition features a 2160 x 2160 panel per eye and 114-degree field of view. It has full Steam VR support and WMR's inside out tracking. The HP Reverb Virtual Reality Headset -- Pro Edition will be available for purchase in late-April for $649 and comes with a 1-year commercial warranty. The HP Reverb Virtual Reality Headset -- Consumer Edition costs $599 and will have a 1-year limited consumer warranty. Pro Edition price includes: HP VR Headset, 3.5m headset cable for desktop and mobile PCs, .6m headset cable for HP Z VR Backpack wearable VR PC (sold separately), 2 motion controllers, cleanable face cushion, 1 DisplayPort to mini-DisplayPort adapter. The consumer edition doesn't include the .6m headset cable or washable fabric face cushion.

"As the commercial VR segment is expected to grow to $34 billion by 2022, customers are seeking lifelike VR viewing to help open doors to new business opportunities in product design, training, and engineering," said Spike Huang, vice president and global lead of VR, HP Inc. "The time for commercial VR is now and adding HP Reverb to our broader virtual reality portfolio is an important step in addressing this growing market."

"With more than 2,500 VR experiences available and counting, Windows Mixed Reality continues to serve as the home for cutting-edge innovations that are fundamentally changing the way we work and play," said Alex Kipman, Technical Fellow, Microsoft. "The HP Reverb headset is an amazing example of the type of innovation we are seeing take place as we push forward and bring the next era of computing -- the era of mixed reality - to the masses."

2160x2160 x 2 panels @90FPS is a bananas amount of pixels to push, and will require a monster GPU for the more intensive games.

That pricing isn’t as insane as I expected.... I figured it would be $1100 at least.

new and stronger GPUs just are not being pushed fast enough , VR still needs to grow before it can satisfy the needs for all types of games and even now high GPUs barely handle it

honestly after so long since Oculus CV1 and Vive were released i expected we will be further ahead in both GPUs and VR

But, with only 2 cameras, this headset isn't going to be great for gaming anyway.

So 6 months and it will be half price in the Microsoft store like its failed predecessor? Microsoft just cant encourage them to burn $$$ fast enough on mixed (but not really) reality.

I have an original Vive. The controllers for this seem to connect through bluetooth to the headset, is the tracking nearly as good? I haven't been doing much research on newer HMD's.

I have the Rift. The generally held position is that using only two cameras mounted in the HMD is going to be terrible for tracking the controllers. It's already questionable when using 4 cameras as compared to having 3 lighthouses.

I can understand the cost save of putting the tracker in the HMD as 2 cameras but you would think Microsoft could have bothered to make their standard extensible by adding external camera bases or light houses to augment. But hey they called it mixed reality when it doesn't even do that so.....

Tracking may not be terrible. I thought 2cam on my Odyssey+ would be worse than it is. No match for Lighthouse or 3cam Rift, but you can play most things.

Now, the ugly WMR controllers on the other hand. Always knocking those big rings into things. Can't "pick things up" off ground. Really waiting for Valve's knuckle controllers here.

Well, the Oculus Rift S looks promising. Was hoping for some [H] coverage and treatment on this new release, but with Kyle heading to Intel and killing off the site, I don't know where I'm going to get the real deets on what graphics card will be necessary to run it. Hope your next chapter is good at Intel, Kyle. Been reading this site ever since I got my Celeron 300A with Abit BE6 motherboard. Going off topic but I'm still a bit in shock...

Honestly, more manufacturers of VR gear means we get more competition. I welcome our new HP vendor! This actually looks like a rather good VR kit.

I just wish it didn't use WMR controllers. If they had simply released an optional version of this HMD that was compatible wiith existing Vive lighthouse tracking and included a set of knuckle controllers, this would have been awesome.

I'm hoping that Gabe and Valve announce soon - similar HMD specs with true lighthouse tracking and knuckle controllers would be a clean sweep as to the enthusiast market.

Well Valve's turn at GDC is tomorrow. Hopefully they throw us a bone.

Agreed - even if no real announcements, it would be great if they at least talked about it and provided a ball park window for a release like this Summer or Fall. A demo as to their latest prototype would be huge, but I'm not holding my breath. :)

Know a single GPU that will push 4K at 90+ FPS consistently?

In some but not all titles, yes. Plus, as with the Oculus etc. better GPUs will be released during its lifespan. The person I was responding to though was I think under the impression, based on language they used, that it was somehow way more than 4k.
