Ultra high end camera manufacturer RED recently launched an Android smartphone with an ultra high end price (which Apple and Samsung nearly matched with recent releases), but the phone's reception was mixed. Users summed up the integrated 3D display as "neat," but note that most Android apps can't take advantage of it, and the built-in camera is conspicuously mediocre for a product that comes from one of the world's premiere camera designers. Many reviewers insisted that the promised modular expansions would justify $1300+ price tag, but Reddit user /u/ReipasTietokonePoju just noticed that RED has removed all references to the addons from their website. Project lead Jim Jannard already responded to the controversy on the Hydrogen One's user forums, claiming that the RED team is now responsible for the "professional image capture program," and that "you can expect one of the most significant 4V updates in the next two weeks." My corporate speak is a little rusty, but I don't see any references to the promised storage expansion and battery modules. Fortunately, it would appear that the camera module is alive in at least some form, and we'll presumably learn more about it in the coming weeks. Thanks to T4rd for the tip.

Some have noticed that we have taken down the images of the 2D module from our website. The reason for that is because we are currently in the middle of radically changing the HYDROGEN program. As I have said before, everything can and will change. A series of obstacles and then new discoveries have given us the opportunity to significantly improve the entire program, not only for HYDROGEN but also for RED. The changes create new opportunities to better satisfy the professional image capture customers as well as the casual consumer for the HYDROGEN program. The RED team, led by Jarred Land, as of now will now be fully in charge of the professional image capture program for HYDROGEN and the HYDROGEN team is fully engaged on the new in-device image capture system. Both are major advancements to what was previously posted. We are excited to share details as soon as we file the patents and lock down the changes and are all pretty excited about what is coming... As a side note... all HYDROGEN customers will be "obsolescence obsolete" when buying into the new professional image capture program.

What the fruck does this mean? I guess their existing customers are now "wallet-escence wallet-lite".

One more clarification… “obsolescence obsolete” for HYDROGEN owners means that your H1 is NOT obsolete when the Pro camera version comes out. Not sure how this got twisted up…

Yeah, I don't know either. Like I said, my corporate speak is rusty.

All the fluff and advertisement and end result being a major fail seemingly in all departments. Not that it was unexpected though. Big ballsy ego from RED as usual but it shows that sometimes it's best to just stick to what you're good at.

Well that's the issue. RED is good at cameras, yet the Hydrogen One's stock camera isn't that great, and their pro camera plans are clear as mud.

Maybe it's early in the morning for me so I am not processing on all three vacuum tubes, but this all boils down to "company X removes unrealized product listings from website and outrage ensues"? Don't companies do this all the time? You know.. change product line up, go into different directions, cancel some projects that don't work, etc?

I mean sure.. if I was a sucker with enough money to part for a Red-Anything I would be angry, but this seems like an outrage-mountain out of a mediocre-mole hill.

Why didn't make they something to compete with Blackmagic, a pocket video cam. Why does it need to be a phone as well?
It just needs to be the best mobile cam on the market for working pros. A lightweight gimbal solution at can adapt mirrorless lenses.

Thats the thing, for the price and all the claims made and they didn't even use one of their own sensors for the camera. And all the HW was 2 generations old, yet the reasoning was the modules, however if those are needed to make the phone "good" the phone should be CHEAP. They copied Amazons failed "3D" screen by calling it "4V", which is a gimmick and not useful. The camera is beat by the ORIGINAL Pixel phone, and they copied Moto Mods. Nothing about this phone made it worth the price, and in most cases is beat by phones in the $300 range.

Top is the RED camera and bottom is the Pixel at 100% crop:

Project lead Jim Jannard

Wait, did he refer to himself in that way?

He's the founder of Oakley and founder/CEO of RED Digital.

A few years ago I got the opportunity to tour RED's facilities near LA and meet their former CTO / current staff (I'll say, they're very dog friendly in the cubicles). From what I was told, RED Digital came about because Jannard was filming an Oakley commercial and wasn't pleased with what Sony/Canon/Panasonic were bringing to the table quality wise, so he went and assembled a team to build the first RED camera (forming RED Digital).

That and apparently the phone hardware is pretty crappy. I also find the phone to be really ugly. Screen seems to be a fail as well and name is misleading. It may feel good in the hand but not seeing the appeal even if the hardware did deliver.
