Diablo Is Now Available for Purchase on GOG

Better left to nostalgia. Fantastic game for its time and the very first action RPG, but it’s been usurped by better action RPGs several dozen times by now.

Path of Exile perfected the genre and it’s free.
Titan Quest, Diablo 2, even Dungeon Siege.

LOL $10? They should be giving it away for free by now. Who is going to pay for a 20 year old game?

You've never bought a game from GoG or checked the site out? Just a tip, but GoG stands for Good Old Games.

They have loads of great games that are even more than 20 years old. Examples:

I've bought lots of games from them.

People who want support? They just didn't throw the old code up unmodified. Bandwidth and infrastructure have costs too. Blizzard could afford to release it for free but they didn't want to invest in it, so this is a good compromise. I'm happy it's at least an option for those who want a quick, easy way to run it.

I can't even remember why/when I threw my disks out :( At least I scored a copy of the D2 BattleChest when it was last out years ago and have it handy.

Awwwwwahhh Yeah. I'll be installing this on the ole laptop.
I always give my old games away to friends after I finished them and that is where games like X-wing, Wing Commander, Duke Nukem and Diablo went.
Man, If I would have horded them I would have a killer collection of classic games.

Here's a crazy concept, sometimes people beat good games and get tired of them and want to play something else.

As for it being usurped, not in theme. Diablo had a gothic horror them going on, out of the ones you mentioned, I'd say only Path of Exile is competitive on that front. D2 and D3 sure as hell weren't as dark.

Okay

Go ahead and try it. See if you play it more than an hour

Gaming has come too far for this to amount to more than a fond memory.

If this was ported to Linux then I might give a damn.

This "born again christian"/"reformed non smoker" atittude form linux users, that hey have to spread their gospel in any thread that has nothing to do with linux. is EXACTLY the reason I will never try it.
I will simply not risc turning in to these kind of people.

Why no battle net? :( If only we could run a community battle net server... Oh wait, Blizzard already sued those into the ground...

At least it has LAN! Too bad Blizzard won't add that to newer titles of theirs... -.-

I've read it can connect to battlenet. There is some confusing info out there.

"The original 1996 Diablo is now available for the first time digitally on GOG.com. Fans of Blizzard's classic RPG can choose between two modes; an old-school version with 20 FPS, SVGA graphics and Battle.net multiplayer support, or a more modern version with out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, bug fixes and high-resolution support. Windows users can go to GOG.com and download the re-release for $9.99; there's no need to download the Blizzard app. Unfortunately, Mac users are left in the dust: The company told Engadget that this release is Windows-only and didn't say if it would create a Mac-friendly version of Diablo in the future."

Well I’ve played older games for longer so...yeah I could probably play Diablo as well. Being old doesn’t automatically mean people are being blinded by nostalgia and that the game is actually unplayable.

I know exactly what gog is, and I Know they're failing since they just fired a bunch of emlpoyees. And this is the reason. Their prices are ridiculous for what they're selling. I wanted to get a few games from there too, but not at the prices they're asking. And they don't offer much support either. It's not like they're updating all games to run properly on modern systems.

They also just hired nearly twice as many as they let go, and have a long list of job positions open: https://www.gog.com/work

$10 for a solid game is ridiculous? Not in my view. You can pay more for many worse newer games. I don't think GoG will be more profitable by charging less.

Actually, that's precisely what they do.

So Diablo one didn’t have a highlight loot on the ground button and the representation of the item on the ground you had to mouse over to pick up is representative of the physical size of an item. Good luck finding that ring you heard drop.

Auto pickup? Nope. Auto Sorting inventory space? Nope. Mass sell or buy of potions? Nope. Gold? Takes up room in your small stash,
Frustrating PVP elements in coop, can shoot warrior on accident with arrow or damage with spell but warrior can’t hurt archer or mage without purposely turning on PVP -- IE if playing co-op don't pick warrior.

Pathfinding awful, level design completely flat and linear compared to modern games, all box grid like levels, with four tile sets.

This is the equivalent of the original prince of Persia platformer in games compared to something like the newest tomb raider, or picking up the 1980's 500 game arcade pack on PC, installing it, playing a couple rounds of your favorite Atari game - realizing how much things have changed, and never touching it again.
It’s just not going to hold anyone’s attention these days unless they’ve lived in a technological desert the last 20 years. I LOVED diablo when it came out. Played it through with all three characters, some characters multiple times - but in the last couple years we picked it up again to try at a LAN party coop. I couldn’t stand it for more than 5 minutes - neither could my two friends. You try it - tell me I'm wrong.

Farewell old game. My advice -- don’t sour the fond memories of your favorite titles from two decades ago.

Another old favorite we also tried that just can’t hold up whatsoever?
Die By the Sword

We LOVED that game at LAN parties back in the 90s. We played it for hours. I resurfaced it off good old games at a LAN party a couple years ago. Nobody would try it for more than a round or two. Even I was like -- yep - this aged absolutely horribly.

Look up The Hell 2 mod. It allows you to adjust the resolution (including widescreen), adds bigger inventory, a stash you can share among your characters, increased walking speed in town and out of battle, pressing alt to highlight all loot on the ground etc..
And it adds lan through tcp/ip. It also adds a bunch of new content but the quality of life enhancements alone make it worth it.

Remember how rampant cheating and hacking was on the Battle.net games. I remember an app called Bobafet. One of its abilities was to create a hotkey which would instantly kill all other players on the dungeon level you were on. You could then steal their gear. The flaw of it was that each player's characters were saved locally instead of on Battle.net. Even if they have not fixed any of that, the fact that this is LAN only will significantly limit the number of suspected cheaters

This is pretty appealing, especially with the lack of battle net and inclusion of lan. I believe this is an easy purchase decision. $40 for 4 copies that my wife and kids can all play with me on lan? Yes thank you.

Pure nostalgia for me, i think i played this on my sisters old B/F's MAC on dial up for hours on end!
D2 i think is where i really spent more time though as i got older and got more into gaming.

.............Path of Exile perfected the genre and it’s free....................

God I hope not, if so, the genre is dead for me.

I played POE, it held my interest for all of a month or so. But D2, that I played for years and years and went back too anytime I had to go somewhere with horrible, or no internet service.

POE was OK, but to me, it wasn't a D2 killer.

All depends on the game. I played enough D2 that I am kind of permanently burned out on the genre. D3 was the nail in the coffin. HoMM3 though... still enjoy playing it and definately worth $10 a few years ago.

My friends and I have spent more time going back and playing old games than playing newer games. AoW2, HoMM3, D2, WC2, SC1, Jets and Guns, Planescape Torment, Baldurs Gate, etc... and so many more old great games I'd choose any day over the news ones today.

I have. It's a clunky game for sure, but it still feels a hell of a lot more dangerous and intense than most aRPGS out there. Again, it still leads in gothic horror atmosphere over the sequels and the majority of aRPGs made. Path of Exile is competitive, still need to play Wolcen and Grim Dawn.

I get it, you don't have the patience for old games. The thing is, some things about Diablo are outdated and have been surpassed, other things are timeless and haven't been topped. I don't consider the cons of the original too detrimental to the whole experience.

I've probably played about 5 hours Diablo 1 this week. Would have been a lot more if not for work/family etc... Granted I'm playing a modded version with a bunch of quality of life improvements but the core game is the same.

I've probably put more hours into Diablo 2 than Diablo 3 even only counting the time after Diablo 3's release.

Grim Dawn is a fantastic game, but don't waste your time with Wolcen. That game has been in alpha for the last 5 years and it shows no signs of ever leaving alpha. They have remade the alpha several times, it's pretty much the Star Citizen of action RPGS.

Yep. The whining is deafening.

THAT SAYS THAT WARCRAFT AND WARCRAFT 2 ARE SOON TO FOLLOW. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Happiness... is that you?

I was hoping for a full remaster like SC received, but I can understand why they may not do it for this game unfortunately. I would definitely buy it, but lots of people that didn't play it back then will just see all the pain points these days. SC still plays like a very good strategy game, Diablo however spawned lots of improved increments over the years.

Still need to grab the SC remaster. Sure, I still have my original disks that I got on a midnight release but it's just... good ol nostalgia :) And yeah - WC2 being released? I'd get that in a heart beat too lol. MAN I played the heck out of that game when we got a modem connection working properly. Good times :)

I think this may have simply been gog reaching out to them enough that it was worth the minimal effort to do it. a remaster could still be in the pipeline but I would lean more toward a D2 remaster since that seems to be the bar that people hold D3 to. And they probably would squeeze more than $10 out of people on that one i bet.

Ok, so I bought it and took a run at it this weekend, and I made about an hour on the dot. It hasn't aged especially well.

However, I took Majinhoju's suggestion and installed the Hell 2 mod, and that really fixed most of my gripes. You can highlight fallen objects, everyone moved to the center of town so you don't need to wander for ages to find Wirt, walking speed increased, and a ton more.

So maybe I'll just stay awhile, and listen.
