AMD announces new Threadripper

If as predicted, we can get 16 core 32 threads on Ryzen 2's, I can't even imagine what to do with all the cores they can throw on the new Threadripper 2's. Jeebus!

I'm thinking 32 on the 3950x and 64 or 72 on the 3990wx ... you know if those were the equivalent names.

Since we are kind of hitting the wall on process shrinking. Maybe horizontal is the answer instead of vertical development. Hit 7nm and then just start packing the chiplets in. Intel is going to start making sandwiches where cache will be level higher like a slice of meat on the bread which is the cores.

Imagine if you stacked a 512gb level 2 or 3 cache the whole width of the die but sandwiched on top of the cores and had vertical access lines to the cache. Think how nand is layered. It would a absolutely destroy anything out. That is what Intel is wanting to do. A 3d topography of sorts.

Oh the urge to have 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen Threadripper. Have two out of the three so far.

You know instead of tons of cores they could just up the speeds you get instead, I have my doubts about seeing massive core counts being available. Guess it all will depend on how well this shrink is going for them.

Cant really it seems 5ghz is the hard limit of Si based chips. At least for now it seems.

Anyways credible rumors suggest the 7nm cores are going to run up to 5ghz out of the box.

I think the rumoured Ryzen 3000 12c/24t at 4.2/5.0ghz would be enough for me, but I'm curious to see what kind of speeds they can get out of higher core count TR golden samples.

The thing you are going to hear is ... why do I need a Threadripper if I can get a 16 core regular Ryzen.

The differences are going to be rather big actually. Threadripper has more cache, way way more lanes, quad channel ram (if you can benefit from it) etc... So it remains a halo product. Where I hope the next threadripper shines is going to be direct CCX ram access instead of a cross over infinity fabric style that it has now. That might substantially increase throughput and HPC numbers.

Yeah more pci-e lanes kind of future proof a system. Case in point my old x79 platform now using pcie for an m2 boot ssd, 10g lan card, etc...

Yeah, looks like my 1920x is going to get an upgrade, I'll prolly go 24 cores and a bump in clock speed (hopefully)

I don't see the argument at all - TR has 24 and 32 core processors and will likely get a bump all the way to 64 (and numbers in between) with zen2. I'm tempted to sell my 2700X system and build a 1900X one just to switch over to the platform. The only reason I don't is that I now have 4 am4 systems so if I upgrade the top one, all of the rest get an upgrade. Moving to TR will get rid of the fleet upgrade path.

What a fucking awful site that is. Open the page, see 1 image of a roadmap from AMD, a short text summary, and some random, completely unrelated video starts playing below it. Oh and ads EVERYWHERE. Can we give warnings next time we post a toms shardware link?

You miss the point. Its the fact that AMD has indicated a new Threadripper. Regardless of where it came from, Toms is not a fake news site, maybe not the best by any means, but now we as a community are now aware that for sure a 3000 series Threadripper is going to be released.

That is the whole point of why I even made this thread.

On that note ;) if you don't like links download/install another browser use the heaviest ad block script block and open links in there. Can be as easy as setting that browser as your preferred one and things will happen automatically.

The rumour is there will be 48 core version of Threadripper.

Don't think he was saying it was a bad news site, just that the ads there are terrible. I've had my toms tab hijacked by ads on several occasions, really irritating.

Tom's has ads? What did you do, whitelist them?

Ok I understand what you are saying and I agree. I misunderstood the reply he made. All good.

As far as ads etc... I use PiHole on my Raspberry Pi 3 B+. Works so good.
