I"m not new to Apple products but would like to get advice and opinions from members of this forum.

I'm interested and may purchase this 2nd 12.9" 512gb Apple tablet from a seller on Mercari. but since the tablet hasn't been reset cause it still have the previous ower icloud info. Its still usable and they have tried to contact the owner thru the current icloud email but have gotten no response.

If purchase and receive the tablet is it possible for the previous owner to lock out the tablet? Would it be possible for me to try and find the owner using the icloud email to see if they are willing to remove their icloud acct?

Yes the previous owner could still lockout the tablet, wouldn't recommend buying unless its not tied to an owner.

Definitely do not buy anything icloud locked. You'll quickly hit a roadblock using the tablet. Everything in iOS is tied to an iCloud account.

The previous owner could lock it anytime.

I would avoid that sale. Save up for something entirely reset and unlocked.

well here's the problem. I've bought a wifi only 1st gen 32gb 12.9 from a pawnshop several months ago that had a bent case but still had applecare till 12-19-18. I did the applecare warranty and was sent a new replacement. but have been trying to sell it and getting no offers for it.

Then you're probably pricing it too high. First gens with no options are worth sub $300. If you want it to move, $250.

At $400 for a new 1st gen 32gb wifi only, I dont think so.

You're welcome to disagree with what the market is willing to bear. But then you're also welcome to never sell it and keep it forever.
I can buy a Gen 2 for $500-$550 used. That's just the reality of the situation.

If people aren't biting, the bottom line is the only thing that makes it move is price.

OP, dont buy that ipad, it could get locked at any time. and without the original purchase receipt apple will tell you to gtfo.

Dang, then I got lucky. Purchased an icloud locked used mini 4 from an online pawnshop site, took it to the genius store w/ my purchase receipt. they took the ipad mini and receipt, went to the back then came back w/ receipt and cleared the tablet for me to use.

I had a company owned ipad at work that some idiot locked to their account(before my time). i called apple education support and they said no prob with original receipt but cant do shit without it. h/o had it of course. so I was just going of that convo.

UPDATE:

I requested a return of the tablet to Mercari and the request was granted. i will get my refund but since the seller had cancelled the transaction, they told me that i dont have to return the item. to either keep it or dispose of it.

Can you use it in a locked state? You can buy unlocks I believe.

It's not locked. I tried it this morning using my Apple id in the app store with no problems. It's just the iCloud id which is linked to the previous owner.

Now the seller sent me a message thru an item I'm selling asking for the tablet back.

But mercari sent me this email yesterday:

We've issued you a refund!

We’re pleased to let you know that we’ve issued you a refund for $250.00 in the original form of payment and canceled this transaction.

Typically, refunds appear on your credit/debit card in 5-10 days.

Your seller says you can keep the item, so consider it on us!

Any opinions on that topic?

Up to you if you wanna keep it. You aren't obligated to send it back. The icloud lock is the lock I mean
