Radeon VII Owner's Club!

The Radeon VII is going to be my first ever AMD GPU (new system also includes a Ryzen 5 2600 CPU) all on a itx board. I was seriously going with a 2080 BUT after reading SOOO many sites and forums I decided to go the Raedon VII route. I keep an open mind (I admit I have always used Nvidia GPU in the past) and even though i have seen SOO many damn numbers flash before my eyes (FPS, Power etc etc blah blah) and some reviewers have done a great neutral job of reviewing the Radeon VII and others have not BUT so many people just really do not make up their own mind BUT it just comes down to this..

So big deal if the RaedonVII is a single % digit difference (or visa versa) FPS wise or whatever. To me it is the playabilty of the game(s) and from what videos I have seen the R7 is, imho, more fluid plus the color is more richer/vivid than other GPU(s) which is what I am looking for.

Also I am not taking into effect the RTX/DLSS into play just straight across GPU to GPU comparisons. Now add the RTX/DLSS and really I am not impressed with what I have seen those do let alone what few game(s) (3?) that uses the tech which, in the future, will be great if/when companies jump on the bandwagon on using it.

Now the Radeon VII does not have flashy new tech stuff but just pure raw power (which we all like) and that 16gb of memory is, imho, more future proof (few years wise) than the RTX/DLSS (IF it really takes off) cause if that does not catch hold who want parts of a GPU just sitting there doing nothing.

I am neither fan boy of either companies so I just vote with my $$$ and this time I think I will get more bang for my buck if I go the Radeon VII route :)

So I can not wait to order my Raedon VII card this Friday (payday) and when received/installed it in my new build I will enjoy the brute power of my new card.

Great choice. I've been really happy with my Radeon VII.

I have a Ryzen 2600 too on another rig, a very decent chip.
 
You'll be happy with the Radeon VII. You can crank those settings and not worry about the ram buffer for sure!
 
One thing I never get, you read reviews and they say the Radeon VII is about the same performance and price as Nvidia 2080, so might as well buy the 2080.

Well, if they are the same performance for same price, why don't you buy AMD? It goes both ways, but reviewers and consumers seem to favor Nvidia.

For gaming only, it really would have been better off at this performance level, maybe 8GB of vram (which is likely not possible) and $599.

The reason I bit was to fiddle with something new and I am mildly interested in the $180 of free games.

It does pull more power than the 2080 and the 2080 has more, although mostly useless, features.

If I didn’t care about the games it would be a tough trigger to pull. I wonder if they would have been better off at $599 or $649 and no games.

Who here has an AMD.com branded card? If you do, what kind of ram do you have? I got stuck with Hynix this time around, which may be a bummer. It seems to be stable to at least 1180 so far (haven't pushed it further). After my quad core AMD system that would not boot was fully updated, I decided to see if the VII would work. I stuck it in the second slot, below the RX550 and it booted and loaded windows right up..

I had the AMD V 106 bios from AMD.com ready to load which I did as soon as Windows finished detecting the card. I have been letting it run since about 10:40 this morning using POWERMAX (this is a fresh build and I do not have anything game or benchmarking loaded)..The card seems to hold it's boost clock @1800Mhz @ 1.05V with HBM @ 1133Mhz ATM (0% PL). I did not expect it to perform well since it is sandwiched right up against my PSU (about 5/8" clearance for the first 2 fans with the 3rd having more breathing room). This system has an AMD X4 925 with it's anchient AM3 (not AM3+ lol) and 8GB of DDR3 and a single SSD. The system does have good air flow (200mm up front) with a single 140mm exhaust both turned down to 7V). Here is what I am seeing so far:

For the most part, running memory at 1200 MHz didn't seem to be any issue. I use Memory Timing 2, which seemed to help after I overclocked the core, but honestly I have no idea what the difference is.

I was able to get up to around 1880 on the core with very little tweaking of anything else. I'm on 1920 now, which is about the highest I can go without adding to much voltage.

Based on the [H] undervolting article, I was able to get more performance actually with lower clocks. Was on 2000 MHz w/ 1.2V on core, and it was almost stable but I discovered 1920 with 1.040V had the same performance (but it is stable).

One thing to check is the minimum clock speed in Wattman. If you put this up a little, it does increase FPS by a small amount (maybe 1 or 2 frames, but every little bit counts). Cheers.

Thanks for the info...I can reach 2030 on air (and hold accordig to GPU-z) but I was watching FPS like a hawk (granted I an using one canned power virus type program) and could see the DROP in fps with various settings. I really cannot wait to get these on water and see what I can do. I have not opened my second card (nor the 3rd I am trying to basically GIVE away at this point just to recoup my money) to see how they fare or if they have Samsung ram. I know Hynix actually had a HUGE hand in developing HBM, just Samsung beat them to the punch with HBM2 since their in house fab allowed them to work through the kinks that Hynix ran into right before VEGA's launch, which required AMD to push VEGA back quite a bit in order to secure enough supply from Samsung to even launch VEGA.

I am basically doing a 24/7 "burn in" since I was going to cobble together a WC'ing solution, but with the launch of the full cover blocks less then 4 weeks or so now (stupid life got in the way!) I think I am going to keep it on air and keep my main system torn apart.

I will be out of town for a week of those 4 mentioned above so its not worth the hassle to refill it only to drain it yet again. I have to say I have always had good luck draining a single large horiztonal rad (and even when I had an extra thick 120mm vertical rad helping out my big 360mm in my old case that cooled my 5Ghz 3770K and 3 290s blocked up in X-fire) but drainig this loop with the 420mm Alphacool rad vertically is a real PITA.

It did not help one of my now "classic" Koolance QDCs had a micro crack that would drip one drop (just one) every 40 min requiring me to tear it down and forgo using them since I cannot buy a replacement and a new set would run me $85 or so.


Are you going to go to water on yours? I love OC'ing, but I value silance mroe then anything, especially since this is in my living room as it pulls triple duty as a gaming rig, HTPC, and mining rig/PLEX server. I CANNOT WAIT to get my hands on that 12c Zen2 part!

Also, I would contest that Radeon VII runs hotter and louder.

I have mine overclocked, and temps are under 75C and I cannot hear the fans spinning at all.

Think about that. Many enthusiasts might do this, and for some, there are real benefits from the Radeon VII. However, relative to the competition, these benefits are not grounded in gaming today, and given the lack of hardware for ray tracing which is unquestionably the future of game graphics, picking up a GPU solely for gaming that doesn't come with ray tracing hardware seems at the least a bit short sighted if the buyer intends to keep said GPU for the purpose of gaming for any real length of time. Many of the people in this thread own multiple systems and many regularly flip GPUs, and I absolutely understand why they may have purchased a Radeon VII. I've been tempted to pick one up for the same reasons!


But in the end, my next GPU will have ray tracing hardware, be it from AMD or Nvidia (or hell, Intel).

The truth isn't trolling, and I don't have anything against AMD. Running an AMD GPU in my system right now, and I use AMD where their products make sense.

I basically agree with what you’re saying although ray tracing is still not a factor in my purchases, and I own a 2080ti and have played with it.

I went Radeon VII over a 2080 to fiddle with it and the $180 in games. Performance is close enough. I am watercooling but you can undervolt if you want to reduce power/noise. That seems pretty popular and realistic.

Overall I am thrilled they have something competitive in the 2070/2080 range. I’d say the “compelling reason” is the 3 free games effectively dropping the price. The question is if you value them or not.

I agree with the folks here. Owners threads I always took as circle jerk echo chambers for the actual owners. I wouldn’t want the AMD biased people coming into the 2080ti owners thread and telling me how DLSS is a joke or the shitty adoption rate of RTX in general.

After much debating, I decided to join the Radeon VII club. Currently sitting at stock settings aside from lower my voltage from 1112mv to 1010mv. I do no plan to overclock until I get a water block installed.

EK informed me that it will be late March early April before they release a block.
 
Nice Creepin_D . The Radeon VII is perfect for 4K.

I've been really impressed with the performance, especially coming from Vega 64.

While not every game can be maxed out, I found many were playable at Ultra settings with just a few tweaks to High.

And the cards seem to have a good amount of overclocking room, even on air. On water, even better.
 
Just got some new monitors to go with the new card. 144 Hz + FreeSync totally lives up to the hype.

FreeSync is where it's at. I'm using the Radeon VII on a Samsung 55" 4K TV, with FreeSync. I had a Vega 64 previously, but it wasn't enough. Now with VII I see the full potential of the TV.

144Hz is nice, though. If I was only to have one monitor, it would definitely be high refresh adaptive sync (the TV is more for media/gaming). The hype is definitely real.

I was running 1080ti FE, been running Radeon VII on 75" played BF1, BF5, Anthem. Maxed out 4k.

I haven't done much gaming on radeon VII, 10-20 hours so far. I'd like get card junction temp cooler.

Radeon VII runs hotter and louder, where nvidia ran cooler and quieter.

My last Amd card was Amd 6970.

I'm going full Amd this time. Haven't done that since Anthon 64 days.

Xbox one X yeah it's no high end PC, but its sure fun, its 1 reasons I'm switching Amd for freesync, and support Amd give them chance,

I really think they can do magic this time around

Not sure how you're pulling this off. Mine is undervolted to 990mv running stock clock speeds and fans need to spin at least 2600rpm to keep temps at 75c. Clearly audible to me and the air flow is average to good in my case.

I have a Sapphire card myself and it came with Hynix. Does anyone have Samsung? I thought all of these had Samsung memory.

I think everyone has a different preference to what is acceptable or loud when it comes to fan noise. For instance, I set my fan profile to be 60% fan at 70C. I personally find 60% fan audible, but only slightly noticeable over the other fans in my case. With that setting and running 1000mv (1810/1200), my temps might hit 70C once or twice, but generally are 65-68C (junction under 100C). But my office this time of year is generally 65-68F, so not very warm.

My memory is Hynix as well.

I should preface the statement. I have an A/C on all the time (on fan) and a white noise machine (for privacy). I have my Radeon fan settings on Auto, and I cannot hear any noticeable fan sounds.

If you have a really quiet room, that may be a different story. I also don't remember the exact temps on average, but when I was overclock stress testing it was around 75C or less (I think it went up to 77C one time on FurMark or something like that).

If you’re a silence whore like me, I put the majority of my PCs in my basement and run display port extenders. My one PC upstairs is still silent since the pump/res/radiator is in the basement. As an added bonus it got rid of the cold drafts in my house since now my basement is warmer.

A less intensive way is to make sure you are frame limiting to your monitors max refresh. I personally run my cards around 85% utilization because I don’t like fps drops.

I honestly dont hear fans over my logitech z906 speakers and I'd rather keep my card cool :) moving air and noise I've always had, it's no biggie yo me.

I my VII gets maxed @ 4k it looks amazing on my 75" with freesync on, honestly Card Beasty, GPUs do all of work now Adays on 4k and gaming, BF5, BF1, Look beautiful to me, I need more games try!

Oh also for you guys on air. There’s that nylon washer mod which helped some people immensely. I haven’t looked into it though. Just some good reports.

I ran used gtx 780ti blower for year or so, then picked up used gtx 1080ti came with h50 mod, then went Radeon VII has 3 fans, I'm use to noise as well, i know that noise is air flowing at very fast rate and my card is being cooled.
