Hey all,

I can't seem to find a SFX / SFX-L psu with dual EPS connectors for a project I'm working on. I currently have a Silverstone SX650-G sitting on a shelf and was wondering if anyone can dumb-check me on potentially using one of the two modular PCIE ports as a secondary EPS.

I've looked at the pinout of the port and they look identical to the standard EPS port so it should just be a cable that I need to create.

Possible or stupid idea that will burn down the house.

On many modular PSUs the PCIe and EPS plugs are interchangeable, so you would just have to buy another EPS cable. However, that doesn't seem to be the case with Silverstone.

Alternatively, you could use a PCIe->EPS adapter cable...as long as you aren't coming close to using 100% of the maximum EPS power.

How do you tell if the modular PCIe and EPS plugs are interchangeable?

I have a Corsair CX750M on my test bench and would like to test dual EPS12V boards.
 
If they are labeled the same and use the same connector, that's a big clue.
 
Just use a PCI-E to EPS adapter. That would be foolproof.
 
I don't know for sure but Silverstone uses the same pinout in all their modern PSUs so that all cables/after market cables are compatible.
 
Did anyone manage to solve this problem without resorting to a converter like this? I'd strongly prefer not to :/ It's ridiculous how hard this is -- the Corsair 600W has a uniform pinout for the PCIe and EPS https://smallformfactor.net/wp-content/uploads/Corsair-SF600-pinout.jpg so this would take care of it but it's not SFX-L :/

Someone with the right molex tool needs to get on creating the right cable... pinout at https://www.modders-inc.com/power-supply-pinout-repository/9/ -- get three 12V lines from the PCIe connector and steal one from the peripheral block.

Not enough of a market to do so. Most SFX form factors won't need two EPS. Even if the motherboard supports two EPS, it usually doesn't need both of them to run.

FYI, Corsair is apparently releasing a 750W SFX unit that will support dual EPS sometime soon, probably announced around CES.
Although depending on timing, I may skip the SFX PSU altogether and just buy the HDPLEX 400W HiFi DC-ATX and 400W AC-DC kit. HDPLEX is perfectly willing to supply multiple PCIe-EPS cables.
Sometime in the near future, they will be releasing an 800W DC-ATX model that will support dual EPS perfectly fine. You'll just have to shell out for two of the internal 400W bricks and work out a multiple power cord situation.
Which if you are going through all of that juryrigging hell, finding an extra mount location for a second C13 socket and buying a Y splitter power cable should be trivial.

Yeah, it wasn't actually made available until about the 2nd week January. Right after my post. I was one of the first people I saw to order it on Jan 7.
It's been working great in my Cerberus X. Pretty quiet. Cables could be a tiny bit longer though. The Cerberus X is obviously a larger than average SFF/SFX case, but with the placement, the EPS/ATX connecters really couldn't be closer and they still required a ton of effort to get the cables to reach.
Also, I'd really appreciate some alternative cable options. Longer, low profile, maybe alternate colors? It's a pretty premium PSU designed specifically for high wattage, high dollar systems. You might as well make it pretty.

Silverstone does offer a ton of aftermarket cable options and all their PSUs use the same pinout.
