The [H]ardForum Perpetual Freebies Thread

WOAH.

I just did some more reading on them. I just got schooled. Wow, man thanks for letting me know. I guess I never really knew what I had. My apologies. I never heard of this technology.

Welp, to the trash you go.

Wait what? I could use FB-DIMM's (8GB sticks on eBay auction?).

FB-DIMM's were the only memory in use for Intel Core2 server chips on the 5000/5400 chipsets. They are definitely worth some money, especially the higher capacity sticks. PM.

I was not advocating doing it at home. Both the bond wires and the pin plating are a source, admittedly small, of Au.

Are you seriously saying that landfilling unwanted board is preferable to recycling to you? Do you not think that mining new gold has environmental impacts?

I live in a West coast port city, so YMMV, but I'm getting over $1/lb for current production board, more for older board and backplanes, it adds up.

The amount of gold in electronics from the late 90s until today is so infinitesimal that you might as well mine new gold from a mine and it'll create less pollution and toxic waste.

Every process used to extract gold from old electronics either involves burning it or crushing it into a slurry where everything is mixed together and toxic substances like mercury and aquaregia are filtered through to dissolve the gold in a liquid solution and extracted. The slurry is then unceremoniously tossed in the landfill (or on the ground), full of toxic acids, mercury and compounds of heavy metals that leak into the environment. Unlike the mining industry, the eWaste industry is not properly regulated and anything that doesn't make them a profit is trashed, no matter the human or environmental cost. Much of the eWaste in our country is shipped to third world countries like India, several African countries and China where they just burn the stuff in piles to get the metals out. Plenty of documentaries on it on Youtube, I suggest you watch a few.

Yes, I'd much rather see circuit boards in landfills than reduced to a toxic nightmare slurry.

shut up and drink your PCB slurry.

I got a bunch of older Office software I would like to give away.

4x Office 2007 Small Business Upgrade
1x Office 2007 Standard Upgrade - One taken!

They're all case and disc with key. I picked these up to resell over the years but they never moved, and I need the space, so maybe someone here can use them for cheapy giveaway builds for schools or churches or whatever. I'd only charge shipping, of course. Lemme know if you'd like a few.

they're listed as upgrade, I'm assuming I'd need an older version already to upgrade?

Huh, It might be your lucky day, I happen to have part C in that manual. I use the Evo212 on my socket 2011 which happens to not use part C but part H instead, so you can have this part C. Just make sure this is the part you need. Picture of it below and in its retail package:

PM'ed back.

Another freebies in return:
500GB 2.5" and/or 3.5" Seagate SATA drives, just pay shipping. USPS FC should be < $5.

I need to do a bad sector check on both, but I know they power on and detect at the very least.

I have a pile of cpus I got here I was going to use for an art piece but never got around to it. If anyone has any use for 20 or so cpus from the athlon era back...they’re all pinned afaik. No promises any work or what you’ll get specifically. It’ll be like a box of chocolates. Haha.

I also have a commercial rainbird irrigation controller I am tired of looking at. If anyone can put it to use without just flipping, lmk. It’s bulky so expect ~$30 shipping.

Free local (Knoxville, TN) pickup--Deepcool Tesseract ATX case (black with blue accents). This is the ventilated panel version (not the windowed version). It's new in the box. I purchased this a long time ago for a build that ended up getting canceled. The postage on this would be a killer, so unless you want to send me a shipping label that's already paid for, this is only available locally. The case looks like the picture below.

This is probably heading to the dump on Saturday (3/2/2019). Please save this from the dump!

Yep. You can use anything from Office 95 and up, you only need to insert the disc when prompted to install. I was originally going to include some spare OEM versions of Office 98 which let the software install, but I wasn't sure if it was okay to offer them here since well, they're OEM. (I realize we can't sell these, dunno about giving them away...)

If a mod says it's okay I can throw one of these in the package.

In need of two DDR2 so-dimms for a laptop for someone less fortunate. I am fixing a laptop that has a dead hdd, and it only has 2GB of ram. Going to upgrade it to 64bit win 7 and I am donating a 500GB drive but I would also like to upgrade it to 4GB of ram. Would be super stoked if someone had a couple of 2GB so-dimms they would part with. Please PM me if you have something.

Anyone needs Intel Retail CPU coolers for socket 1150/1151/1155? I bought a few CPUs over the years, never used the cooler, so before I throw them in the trash, just thought I'd offer them as Freebie here to see if anyone needs any. Some are with copper core (i5/i7), others are just aluminum (for the Celerons/G/i3).

Free for the taking. Just pay shipping.

Let me know!

After a bunch of hem-hawing the Veteran decided they wanted to go ahead and order the power adapter for the laptop. It'll be here Monday.

I am now looking for a Lenovo WiFi adapter other than a Intel 7260 currently in my T440. The adapter disconnects frequently from WiFi networks yet an earlier model (3160) I borrowed from a friend works fine using the same driver.

If anyone has a newer Lenova branded WiFi adapter, let me know and I'll pay fir shipping.

And, as promised I have 1 x 3TB, WD Red 5,400 rpm hard drive up for grabs for the cost of shipping.

Does it actually have to be Lenovo brand? Are others whitelisted and won't work?

Also, if the 3TB drive is still available, I'm interested.

Has to be Lenovo due to their proprietary nature. Any off the shelf part without a FRU will be rejected by the laptop BIOS.

Drive may be spoken for. Waiting for reply.

Anyone have a couple 1gb sticks of PC2700 or PC3200 laptop ram?

Make sure that the E6550 is compatible with your motherboard, it requires at least a x35/x31 chipset due to the 1333 MHz FSB.

Thank you I did check and it seems to be. It was one of asus' premier boards of the day. If I ever got another which 775 CPU would you say is most widely compatible? Back in the day I owned an e8400 C2D I believe.

LGA775 was one of the longest (if not the longest) supported sockets Intel ever released.

It spanned two completely different generations of CPU architecture (Netburst and Core2), as well as several core revisions of each. You'll need four or five CPUs to span the entire LGA775 range because of chipset limitations.

i925, i955x and prior was purely Netburst only (Pentium 4, Celeron, Celeron D and Pentium D)

i945, i965 and i975 was the transitional period and supported a mix of both Netburst and Core2 parts. 945 chipsets were generally limited to 800 MHz FSB Core 2 parts like the E2xxx, while the 965 and 975 supported 1066 MHz FSB CPUs like the E6xxx series (besides the few models which had a 1333 MHz FSB like the 6550 and 6750.)

x31/x35 and beyond were purely Core2 and Core2 Quad parts.

If I were to make a set, I'd get a Pentium 4 530, Pentium D 925, Pentium Dual-Core E2160, E6600 and an E8400. This would get you near the entire range of compatibility.

Thanks for the info! If anyone has any of these CPUs lying around I don't mind throwing a few bucks your way. Otherwise I'll probably have to buy a few off of ebay. I'm guessing 775 will require me to have some DDR2 correct?

LGA775 spanned three memory technologies, DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 late in its life.

Since the memory controller is on the north bridge, the memory required depends on the motherboard. You can end up with weird memory combinations, especially on 3rd party chipsets.

Cool. Pretty crazy it went all the way back to DDR. Doubt we see those days ever again.
