The new Metro game is quite impressive. Very playable with all the settings maxed at 3440x1440 and having RT on makes a pretty big difference with the lighting. I think this is the first game that really helps showcase ray tracing, it was more subtle in BFV. Some screens I took...

This is a good showcase on what the raytraced lighting can do. We are so used how games are faking lighting and shadows that we don't notice it. With RT off some things look like the lighting is flat in areas and objects can look like they are floating above things instead of being on top of things.

This is why I was so excited for this release because global illumination is the real game changer with ray tracing. With RT on the lighting and the way it makes objects appear looks so natural throughout the entire scene.

Finally got the MSI 2080 ti Seahawk EK installed. It's one heafty beast :)

Just some quick overclocking and have been able to run valley benchmark for a couple hours now at 2145mhz steady. Card runs around 50-53c under load which, I gather, is pretty decent.

Going to install Metro now and really stretch its legs

I pulled the trigger today.. I was on the fence between the Strix OC and the eVga FTW3.. I went with Asus this time around. I’ve had a FTW3 1080ti for years now and it’s been ok... very meh overclocker but looks nice. My 9 series cards were Asus Strix and so quiet and very overclockable.. all this stuff is very ymmv.. I did read a lot of reviews and the Strix seems well built, good pcb, vrm, fan setup... maybe I’ll go Asus on my new mobo too and really ride this horse. ;)

2080 TI FE comes in sometime today. I've been writing a comparison between 1080 Ti, 1080 TI SLI, and now finally will be able to finish with the 2080 Ti. I'll post it on here when its done.

I feel like a idiot. Can someone who understands this more point out what I should be looking at? With RT on it just looks a little brighter in some areas. Does it feel gimmicky? Is it worth the FPS hit? Also, is it worth the extra insane pricing of the latest 20 series cards?

Just looking at an image won't show just how well Ray Tracing looks in this game. There's a 4k video in one of the Metro gaming threads. That shows it much better than a still image ever will. As for weather it is worth the extremely high price of these cards is very subjective. I bougjt one myself, but only because my card was showing signs of its age.

No, it doesn't feel gimmicky and I'm usually one that turns off gimmicky features. In the screenshot I posted, the lighting is very different especially if you look around the wood planks. In the RT off image, the area there looks very flat and is lacking depth in comparison. But yeah, maybe check some videos as that will give a better example.

I'm really impressed with the tech in Metro and feel it's worth the FPS hit, whether it is worth buying an RTX card I'm not sure as there's limited support right now. It would probably make more sense to wait until more games are taking advantage of ray tracing. But if you are in need of an upgrade now, I would absolutely get an RTX card. I've been in the AMD camp for awhile actually but there's no way I would get a VII over a 2080 considering it has no RT support. To me Metro shows the tech is very usable right now and can make a big difference.

Digital Foundry did a good video on it

But if you are in need of an upgrade now, I would absolutely get an RTX card.

I had a 1080ti last year before I sold the parts off to my computer. I am looking at building a mATX build for the first time because I am limited on space, but I could get a 1080ti used for around $580 or a brand new 2070 for $500. I can't afford the 2080 let alone the crazy 2080ti.

I asked this question in the nVidia subforum and i'll ask it here... would you suggest I get a 1080ti used or a 2070? I doubt i'll be able to use much ray-tracing if at all on the 2070 at 1440p.

I'm getting antsy. UPS Next Day should have been here by now with my 2080 Ti, as it was scheduled by 3pm, estimate said between 11am and 3:15pm, and it's now 630pm. I just want to put my rig back together as I have no graphic cards at the moment...

Just remember that RT is on ONLY in scenes with a natural light source, sun and sky. Underground, where most of the game is played, there is no RT.

Except that most of Metro Exodus is not underground. Well I haven't finished it by any means, but so far, I have spent more time running around outside exploring than I have inside. You only need to watch the Digital Foundries 4K video to see how good this can be.

The 1080ti is about on par with the 2080 so I would for sure go that route for the price. I will be selling mine really soon also. heh.

So did you get it? Mine is on truck for delivery now to my work... fingers tapping...

Edit: boom!!

What is everyone using these days to monitor FPS in games?

I used FRAPS for years but I am guessing there is something more advanced now.

FRAPS can still work for some games, but it hasn't been updated in years and I would recommend not using it.

MSI Afterburner is pretty good and that is what I use now.

Thanks for the quick replies. I already use Afterburner so I'll look into that :)

Hey guys a few quick questions, not sure if this is the right thread to ask about it but didn't think it deserves a whole new thread and I kind of want the opinion of actual owners. I do not care about ray tracing performance, I'm upgrading from a GTX 970 so the difference is big enough for me without it for sure (also upgrading to 9700k so there should be no bottlenecks).

1- I'm thinking about getting an RTX 2080, but I see people complaining about random issues with it and some joking around with "good luck to have it work after a week", is that the norm or for the most part they work just fine without common issues?
2- I'm considering either the EVGA XC edition or Asus Strix, any of those known for issues? I'm leaning towards EVGA due to good warranty, is Asus good with GPU warranty? I never dealt with them. Feel free to suggest something else if you have any in mind.
3- Is the 8GB VRAM an issue with 2560x1440 resolution at any point?

Any response would be appreciated!

I don't know about the 2080, but I did have problems with the 2080 Ti.

Got one of them replaced via RMA (I originally bought 2 for SLI) and even experienced problems with the new card until I adjusted my system (which required a new PSU and several settings tweaks).

I did eventually get everything working, and after that first 2 weeks of madness things have been rock solid since then.

From what I can gather, the bad cards will fail quick, either immediately or within a week or two. Meaning if your card is running solid for the first 2 weeks you should be golden.

Of course, electronics can fail at any time, but you see there are not really any more of those threads of people complaining about bad cards.

So I think it is okay now for the most part. Worst case, you do an RMA. Not the end of the world. Just buy from a brand with good warranty (EVGA is usually good).

8GB is enough for 1440p, and is mostly enough for 4K as well. There are only a select few games which can use more memory, but even those will still work fine with 8GB.

I am just starting to use Afterburner again after a long stint of using Precision and I much prefer Afterburner.. The skin with the sliders too. Intuitive UI and it just works. Though, the OSD for the G13 LCD was better in Precision I have to say.. they packed more info onto that tiny screen.. Afterburner is not so good at that but I have the critical elements on display.

Finally got around to trying Metro Exodus tonight. Game is really good so far. Metro was always up there as one of my favorites and this looks to be even better than the first 2 titles (at least from the first hour I played).

Graphics are really nice. Hard to tell how much ray tracing has to do with it, but the graphics are simply great. I would definitely recommend picking up this title to try on your new card.

Also, I think DLSS is working and it's not bad. I thought Nvidia wasn't supporting ultrawide or 2080 ti at 1080p, but the option was there and appeared to do something. Got my fps from around 120 to 140, so that is a nice boost. Also looks nicer, so win-win.

I believe this wackiness was related to DICE's implementation in BF:V. Doesn't help that that was the first implementation, but hopefully we'll see a wider range of options in the future.

Hey everyone. So I am building a new computer finally and I found this deal on Newegg for a 2080.

I don't have experience with Gigabyte as a company... I usually stick with EVGA for videocards b/c of the warranty and customer service. But this deal is almost too good to pass up.

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2080 GAMING OC for $754.99 and with a limited 10% off coupon comes to $683.48 total.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814932066&ignorebbr=1

I wasn't in a hurry to upgrade... I was going to do so in a month but if you guys think this is as good as it gets for a 2080 for at least a month and if Gigabyte is a good company then i'll order it now.

I also read quality control issues with the 2080 cards in general which is why I wanted to buy a 2080 from a good company... even the reviews for this one show people relieved that they got the card with Samsung memory as opposed to Micron memory which supposedly is bad?

Wanted to add that I sold one of my 2080 Ti cards, so I'm just rocking one now.

Surprisingly, performance is about the same, even with games that appeared to be using SLI.

And the bugs are gone. For example, the original Mirror's Edge was all jacked up, slow-down and crashes at certain parts. Now it works perfectly.

I tried a lot of stuff to get Mirror's Edge working, even with SLI disabled the crashes still happened. It only worked after physically removing the second card.

I'm done with SLI, single card is way better and this 2080 Ti has enough power with just one.

We are glad you have seen the truth.

I am eating my words on the O11 Dynamic. My top card on stock fan curve hits 86c under load. Bottom card is fine. I stuck a few 120mm fans blowing in over them at the bottom of my case the results were negligible. The only thing I could do was tweak the fan curve so it ramps up sooner. They both stay below 80c now but at the cost of a lot of noise. I thought about maybe looking into another case with better thermals but after doing some research, 80c+ is pretty normal across the board for cases and these FE's. I'm extremely happy with the performance and scaling, even at 3440x1440, but these are the loudest and hottest cards I've ever run.

Still having an issue with hardware accelerated video. If I run a video that uses hardware accelerated video, I get screen flickering. Its find if I turn off accelerated video. It also works fine if I change the power profile from saving power to max power in the Nvidia control center. I thought maybe I had a bad card or something causing it so I tested using each card individually and didnt have any issues. I also bench marked the hell out of them on their own to make sure they weren't bad and both performed like champs for hours of torture.

I agree. Now just need to find a way to make the LED red and it'll make me very happy!

Or to just turn it off. I dont mind it but when I'm going for a certain theme in my case, I the green isn't always great.

Make your side fans which draw from that psu area to exhaust and push pair into the main compartment maybe? Or WC!

I feel like maybe if you flashed it with the EVGA vbios it might unlock that, it's functionally the same PCB and they have full control over their lighting when hooked up to the header.

You can turn off the led with the GeForce Experience app.. no flash needed. :)
