Continuing its crackdown on videos with “dangerous and harmful” content, YouTube has decided to remove ads from videos that advocate against vaccination. The decision was prompted largely by advertisers who reached out to the site after spotting their ads on videos such as “Mom Researches Vaccines, Discovers Vaccination Horrors and Goes Vaccine Free.”

“We have strict policies that govern what videos we allow ads to appear on, and videos that promote anti-vaccination content are a violation of those policies. We enforce these policies vigorously, and if we find a video that violates them, we immediately take action and remove ads,” a YouTube spokesperson said in an email statement to BuzzFeed News.

Anti-vaxxers deserve no platform!

I think the quotation marks make sense here as "dangerous and harmful" is Youtube's own words so Megalith is quoting Youtube in that instance.

Agreed blame the jerks who misused quotes to mean sarcasm. I am far far from a. Grammar nazi but that's how you quote things.

Free speech is the solution to free speech issues like this topic. But I don't think you need to be dale gribble to object yo this heavy handed mocking push for mandatory vaccinations.

It's history not a conspiracy that bad actors and fools have used such things for nefarious purposes in the past. Don't let strawmen and idiots be weaponized to push you into taking an equally stupid but opposite extreme position.

I despise any form of censorship, no matter the target. Censoring someone, just because you disagree with what he says, is wrong. There will be no progress if we shut up everyone who thinks differently from us.

I believe the opposite is true. Shutting people up who are provably incorrect is precisely how we make progress.

/que anti-vaxxers comming out and pretending to be about “free speech”.

Expressing my views on the ignorance, stupidity, dishonesty and pure retardness of anti-vaxxers would get me permabanned.

But if you are an anti-vaxxer...please raise your hand so I can stuff you on my ignore list, before your stupidity has a chance to “infect” me...

This isn't censorship, their simply demonizing it.
Yup, and if someone is simply trying to state their stance and "warn" people why do they need to profit from it? Call me silly (sarcasm) ... but you'd almost think that putting reactionary videos on youtube that gets lots of clicks might be done because it can make them money.

I came here to write something along those lines. Why does an informing channel needs to be monetized ? If you stand by your message and try to wake up others (If I may put it like that) you shouldn't worry about making money no ?
Seems like someone is trying to make a quick buck over a 2019 fashion... similar to vegan if you ask me but that's another story ;)

Alternatively you can get funded from other sources that want you to put out such videos. Advertisers have the right to choose where their advertising money goes, though that clearly can be abused as well. But that's an entirely different thread.

I think it is fine for people to think different, but they better walk the walk and talk the talk, and they better pay the price if their different ideas lead to disastrous consequences.
For one, the Anti-vaxxers should pay with their own pockets if not their own criminal culpability for exercising the choice to not vaccinate. The death of their own children as well as reckless endangerment to the general society should all be levied against them.

Sure, go ahead, say what you will freely, but you'd better be prepared to die by your words as you are asking us to die by yours.

The problem with all of this stems from people under the age of 25 viewing Youtube as a genuine source of information.

This is why you have Flat-Earthers and all the other nonsense....

- I'm pro-vaccine all the way but I look at it from the "your kid, not mine" perspective. Ie. do what you want with YOUR kid.

Not that simple, when you make your child a virus infected “container”...it doesn’t just affect your child...you put other people’s life at risk...

I'm sure advertisers signed a TOS much like the channels signed a TOS that explicitly says that they actually do not have any right to choose if YT says so.

Ding ding ding. This right here. From the very beginning of youtube, people quickly figured out that having an outrageous or controversial point of view can be profitable - you don't actually have to believe in the point of view, you just be convincing enough that people think you do. Figure out the most polarizing triggerpoints for mass groups of people, and hammer them relentlessly.

In fairness, it's the same engine that powers the entire entertainment industry.

Vaccines should be already be mandatory for every child in the US and these anti-vax parents should be jailed.
Not just jailed, but to be charged in civil courts for very real damages. Babies are put at risk of measles from the anti-vaxxers' reckless decision right now, and the worst part is that the anti-vaxxers dare to wash their hands clean of any responsibility for this.
They are despicable scumbags.

Not just provably correct, people putting other people in harms way because of their disillusion thinking. There was a time people died from some these diseases. We are about to learn it the hard way about how bad that's going to be.

it's the young people!!111

i bet that most flat earthers are over 25.

Anti-vax sentiments are wrong and dangerous, don't get me wrong, but that doesn't hold a candle to your kind of callous, moralising, authoritarianism. Not even close. I'll take the anti-vaxxers over people like you any day.

It's a two way street with advertisers. Youtube can choose which advertisements they allow on the platform, but advertisers are free to pull the money if it isn't a contractual obligation. It's more of a business contract between Youtube and advertisers.

It's not authoritarianism. It's a matter of public welfare. Going along your line of argument, if people should be allowed to not vaccinate their children, smoking shouldn't be restricted, reckless driving shouldn't be a crime, etc. Giving people the freedom to do whatever they want is all fine and good, but there are certain actions that will cause direct harm to others that are 100% in the control of the perpetrator, and those are actions that need to be restricted.

Going along your line of argument

False equivalency on a couple of fronts there. Restricting certain behaviour and actions is not the same as compelling actions and behaviours, and no one thinks that reckless driving is safer than following the rules of the road. But when you're advocating for society to put anti-vaxxers in jail and can't see that as authoritarian... let's be honest, there's no way I convince you that it is.

I believe the opposite is true. Shutting people up who are provably incorrect is precisely how we make progress.

In the 1630's Galileo postulated the earth revolved around the sun, everyone thought he was "incorrect" and the church "shut him up" by convicting him of heresy. Turns out the earth does in fact revolve around the sun. There are many examples of scientist, mathematicians and scholars being silenced throughout history, their knowledge and ideas destroyed. Since knowledge and truth are always in flux it makes sense to constantly consider all the possibilities. Seems to me we are in danger of google becoming the new church.

I'm being compelled to drive slow when I want to drive fast. And I believe my fast driving to be safe, yet I can still be put in jail for driving fast. There's an extremely fine line between restricting and compelling actions.

If anti-vaxxers don't want to be jailed for potentially putting society at risk, then they should adopt a system of notifying in advance where they will be and allow whoever owns the place to decide whether they want to allow them or not. Additionally, not vaccinating your child can and should be considered child endangerment, and that is most definitely a jailable offense.

The CHURCH (having absolute power) did not like the real world...and did everything to OPPRESS facts.

Science was right, ignorance (religion) was wrong.
Same thing here...science is right, ignorance (anti-vax) is wrong...your analogy sucks.

Except even if your kid gets the vaccine, there is still a small chance it didn't take.
Then your kid ends up sick, with permanent health issues or even dies because someone didn't want to vaccinate their kids due to this fake information.

Vaccinations are about protecting everyone, not just yourself.
Especially the young who haven't been vaccinated yet, or others with health problems that can't be vaccinated.

My own kid had an allergy when she was young that meant she couldn't get some vaccines.
Lucky she eventually out grew the allergy, and she got the vaccines several years later that normal.

We should always question things and always strive to learn more and better ourselves. However, that shouldn't be a "get out of jail free" card, so to speak, for every situation and every idea. I think any sane, rational, person can agree that racism is bad. So we can seek to learn more about race, question different things about our understanding of race, but we should not give people carte blanche to promote violence and hatred on the basis of race. To bring that around to the vaccine discussion, we should be very open to discussing vaccinations, what goes into them, and the potential risks (as there are some), we should ask questions on them and even ask for more research into their effects, but we should also shout down people that are putting hundreds or thousands of lives at real risk by tricking others into refusing vaccinations based on false information and insane conspiracy theories.
