A "Legend" Reborn: Logitech Brings Back the MX518 Gaming Mouse

Yo Logitech..what about the G7 variation for those of us who hate dealing with wires? That is still hands down your best wireless mouse and it has gotten damned impossible to find batteries.

Edit: G7 not 700..sorry on cold meds screwing with my brain.

I'm still rocking my g500, had a g5 before that. On another computer I have that quakecon mouse from like 2013 or so, thought it might be an mx518, but nope a G400

The new mouse, G502 or whatever sucks because it is a "claw" grip, I returned that sucker in less than 5 minutes of use (hence why I took the beloved quakecon quake mouse out of it's plastic wrapping)

Wish they still made the G700.

I have one that's barely used if you ever get the itch to buy one and can't find one.

I still have my MX 518 but last time I looked for it to make sure I still had it, the scroll wheel was super gummy/sticky. Guess I need to try the alcohol trick like yossarian mentioned. Not sure there'll be a huge demand for the OG model if there's a modern replacement...I was keeping it in hopes of selling it since they were so loved but maybe now I'll just keep it for nostalgia. It certainly was one of the greatest and most ubiquitous gaming mice...it seemed like everyone who didn't prefer the Microsoft mice had one. For you younger kids, we didn't always have dozens of different brands of gaming mice to choose from! :)

My G5 died on me this week after a ten year run and I got a Corsair M65 Pro to replace it since I've not liked any Logitech mouse I've used anywhere since the G5. Am missing the weight/size of my G5 big time.

I saw the picture and said "This look like my mouse", checked it's a G5... is that similar to those ? I LOVE mine and it still works but the cable has seen better days and the scroller (Can't think of the proper word) is picky now...
May have to grab one of the new ones after reading reviews !

I retired mine only a couple of months back after almost ten years of regular (ab)use. It still worked perfectly. I had to take it apart and clean the scroll wheel a few times is all.

Same here, love that mouse. The battery life is crap though, unfortunately. An updated version would be awesome.

Updated circuitry would certainly be nice (the battery life on the G90x and G Pro are amazing in comparison) but as the G700 shipped with regular eneloop batteries IIRC, one could try extending the usage intervals by swapping it out with a higher mAh alternative like the eneloop pro.

Sweet Jesus yes!!!!! Thank you Lord. Something to replace my G5 when it finally passes away.

I miss my old G500 but the G900 makes a good replacement and even better the wireless on battery lasts days.

I've been a Logitech guy most of my life and I've had several mx510/518s. My most recent mice were a G400s (purchased late 2013) and then a G502 Proteus (late 2016). I was not happy with the general design of the 502 and I had issues with the scroll wheel for months until it completely died.

I ended up going with a Corsair Glaive this time around.

Probably going to cave and get this. I just looked up my NewEgg order on my OG 518.. It still is in use on my kid's PC today! So many frags, LANs and beer... and pizza and Mountain Dew and well you get the picture...

RAM PRICES THESE DAYS SUUUUUUCCKK! or not? I know some of you old timers have better ones than this but check it out! 1GB baby!

That's exactly what I did. Didn't make a huge difference, to be honest. Might be nicer to have a Lithium battery instead.

Now if MS would bring back the Natural Keyboard Elite, I could retire this 20 year old badboy.

Was using a mx510 and 518 for ages until a few years ago when I picked up A Logitech g502 Proteus Core. The 502 is nice but I still like the feel of the 510/518. Sold a NOS 518 I had in packaging for $130.00 on ebay about 6 months ago.

Glad they are updating such a beloved and classic design.

Those of you that want the Wingman back or what we used to call it "The Claw" you can always gut them and put in optic sensors.

I have an MX510 I got used from an IT guy at the last company I worked. That must have been over 10 years ago now. I also remember buying a Gainward 6800GT AGP from him at some point.
This mouse did stop working last year, but I just took it all apart, cleaned out the gunk, and it's perfect again.

BROO. I had my MX510 for YEARS and then upgraded to a G500. Ive been using my G500 for around 9 years. Ive repaired the USB cable at least three times. Ive replaced the left click microswitch at least three or four times. Still going strong.

I havent wanted to get a new mouse because I dont like the way they feel... this will retire my G500.

The MX510 and MX518 were awesome, got a lot of good use out of those things for many years, then I went to the G5 and had a blast with it too. Then I moved to the G500s and loved it while it lasted, but that shit died on me. Logitech replaced it under warranty with a G502 Proteus Spectrum, which is what I am using now. Not bad but definitely too heavy and doesn't feel anywhere near as good in the hand as all those previous mice I just mentioned. A new version of the MX518 might be in my future.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the G5 I have is the second version of the G5: https://secure.logitech.com/assets/31243/g5blue-top-and-left-side.jpg
It's still alive and kickin'. I use it on my laptop, or when I work on other people's PCs, or when I go to friend's houses and need to bring a mouse with me for whatever reason.

I loved the G5, mx 518 was almost as good would prefer the g5 (preferably a wireless version) but this is cool as well.

This is the G5 I had: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a4/Logitech-G5-Mouse-Rust.jpg

It was supposed to be the replacement for the MX518. Anandtech review here: https://www.anandtech.com/show/2286.

I'm more partial to the Mouseman myself.

THIS.

Beat me too it, I'd buy a box of them (Logitech Mouseman) if they were re-released (minus the ball of course) I must have worn out a half-dozen of the darn things.
I was looking for this, too! Mouseman Sensa with the textured surface was my favorite.

Logitech CQ38 - Logitech M-CQ38 - Logitech M-S38

Best mouse ever made and the design was reused many times over (wireless, all the major OEM's, colors/patterns, travel/notebook, wingman gaming, force feedback).

I had the serial version and then a PS/2 version with the gray connector. So very many hours of doom/duke3d/quake/half-life/counter-strike and the microswitches never wore out for me. Of course the only downside was the occasional need to remove lint worms from the rollers inside, but when clean I never lost tracking. Someone on eBay liquidated a box full of retail NOS awhile back and I couldn't pass it up.

Anyone remember the Allsop raindrop mousepads? They're still in production lol.

I don't remember the MX518

Is this the same shape as the G5/G500/G500s?

I'm absolutely dying to get that mouse back. My favorite of all time.

I had first a G5, then a G500.

I loved the relatively subtle design of the G500 (the G5 was a little bland, the G500s was a little too much) and the shape and weight were perfect for my hands.

I sincerely hope they bring that back some day.

The thing I remember is that it didn't look that comfortable, but my roommate at the time used one and he said he liked it. I don't think you 'get used to' the shape, you just realize one day that it's working for you.

I remember that the Mouseman Wheel was pretty comfortable, too.

Awesomeness.

I remember the MX shape. I used the MX700 though. Nice of Logitech to update this 518, cause people seriously want this thing.

So, I'm starting to doubt my memory. I know 100% for certain I had a G500 and I loved it. And I know before that I had a mouse with the exact same shape, that took the same weight cartridge in the bottom. I had thought it was a G5, but googling for pictures of the G5 I can't find one in the basic silver and black color scheme I had... I wonder if maybe it was a different model than the G5.

Here it is seen in my ancient setup from ~2005:

That's the best pic I have of it. Anyone remember these things?

Edit

The memories. KVM Switching between my work laptop in a dock and my Desktop on the floor, running Gentoo with KDE as a desktop.

Still rocking a OG G5, been using it since 2005, love this mouse im not sure what ill do if it ever goes, prices on them are insane

I can't remember what finally went on mine, causing me to replace it with the G500 years ago. I think the left mouse button just stopped working, and defied any efforts to revive it.

The G500 eventually died because the cable became intermittent.

Now I have a G502 Proteus Core. The feel is OK I guess. I liked the G5/G500 better. Can't stand the styling of the Proteus Core series though. Too "alien spaceship" for me.

Fairly certain that's an MX500

Did they take the same weight cartridge as the G500?

Because I remember when I bought my G500 that whatever mouse I had before it was identical in shape and had the same weight cartridge.

I am kind of sad that most people at the time were so skeptical of wireless (rightly so though) that MX700/G7 became somewhat of a footnote while MX500/G5 would go down as the standard bearer.

So, I have done some more googling, and the best I can come up with is that the weight cartridge was unique tot he G5/G7/G500/G500s. I know for a fact that my pre-G500 mouse used the same cartridge.

Best I can come up with is that there must have been an early release of the G5 that had a more basic and traditional Logitech styling, and that's what I had, because I am 100% certain they had the same cartridge when I bought the G500.

It had the perfect shape and indents for grasping while banging away during a late night Quake session and no fumbling for any of the buttons.

Yes, the shell design began with MX500, MX510, MX518 and then reused/adapted for the G5, G500, G500s series you are familiar with.

Yes, it taught me thumb to pinky claw grip allowing for smaller movement corrections; try to palm it and you fail.

Indeed.
