Microsoft’s E3 conference should be pretty eventful this year, according to new rumors from gaming website JeuxVideo: the Xbox team is reportedly unveiling its two next-generation consoles, the “Lockhart” (low-cost streaming machine sans disc tray) and “Anaconda” (powerful Scorpio successor), which will allegedly release in 2020 with 8-core Zen processors, custom Navi GPUs, and 1TB NVMe drives. Halo Infinite is also rumored to be a launch title.

It looks like the Lockhart will offer native 1080p gaming, while the Anaconda will offer native 4K with its much more powerful GPU. The Lockhart specs seem suspiciously low, but obviously these are all subject to change anyway, being early leaks. Apparently the Anaconda will be similarly priced to the Xbox One X at launch, costing around $500. According to JeuxVideo’s sources, Halo Infinite will be a launch title when the machines release at the end of 2020, though the game will also be available on the Xbox One family of consoles.

Expected. We're on the 6th year of the Xbox One/PS4's life-cycle and lately they've been releasing next generation consoles around the 7th year. I also anticipate we'll see the Playstation 5 announced this year either at PSX or a completely separate event like they did for the PS4.

I believe it's possible Microsoft announces a streaming only version of One, but I think he "next gen" part is false. They already have the most powerful console on the market right now, why would they need to release a new, even more powerful one?

People buy Sony consoles because of the exclusives. If this rumor is true then Microsoft thinks more power is all that's needed, they might as well just ask us to "Do the math".

It looks like all the hardware will be AMD... Just thinking here but wouldn't it be nice if AMD made an official Steam machine.

ms has made the right moves since xboneX came out. i'll defo be getting the next one due to thier backwards compatibility alone.

1tb nvme drive sounds like the dumbest thing possible.

it will NOT be that.

xbox one X has a 2TB hdd and 4k games are easily over 100GB. I expect a 7200rpm 2-4TB.

Xbox One X has a 1TB platter drive (there might be a 2TB version though).

While I agree that 1TB is way too small for a 4k focused console, I do think a 1TB internal drive with a reliance on user provided external storage seems like MS' MO.

I'm just happy it's SSD-based.

No.

Why build an AMD version of a machine that was a total failure?

idk, 1TB of cheap NAND and an inexpensive DRAM-less controller sounds plausible for something in this pricepoint coming next year, especially if its just plopped right onto the motherboard (ie not socketed). 1TB and 2TB internal flash options sound reasonable, with a USB Type-C port for gigantor spinning rust if so desired.

Right, didn't the/either PS3 and XBox 360 have the option to add storage by either USB or swappable HDD and was carried into the next gen in one form or the other.
Last gen I bought was Dreamcast and PS2.
Basic SSD type storage sounds nice for frequently played games, while having a option for the user to install a 2.5" drive of their choosing would be nice.

Why do you think MS has been buying tons of studios? Hint: Its not for the poorly selling XB1.

yep 360, XBONE, and PS4 all can install games to USB disks. Also the 360 (non-S version at least) packaged its internal disks inside a cartridge for swapping without opening the console. i don't think we'll see cartridge HDDs again though and i wouldn't be entirely surprised if there's no 2.5" bay at all, just onboard flash + USB expansion. If not for this generation then in the -S/-slim refresh. The low cost of spinning rust can't save it from NAND fabrication economies of scale forever.

It doesn't even need to be NVMe. Even the slowest SATA SSD would be a huge performance jump. Recently played around with a One S. The 5,400 RPM HDD is slow. I forgot how long it takes HDD only devices to boot up. I assume Microsoft's pricing for NVMe isn't going to be too far off from older SATA based SSDs, but personally for gaming I'd prefer a decent but larger SSD. But again, that is based off of current pricing. I think by the time this launches MS will be able to source NVMe drives for the same cost.

It would be nice if it had a provision for an extra drive (games are huge these days) that was easy to install. Just unscrew the back, plug in an extra M.2 form factor drive for extra space.

You also have to factor in that they'll be buying at a steep discount due to volume. Though, I wouldn't mind a SATA expansion slot to drop a 2.5in drive into as opposed to a USB drive.

MS been buying studios for ages and just like EA they put them down when a game flops. Even beloved studios like Rare has only put out garbage games since MS bought them.

MS hasn't gone on a developer buying spree like this since the original Xbox. They spent years not buying many studios and now they're building up their 1st party portfolio. They're definitely going to use them for the new Xbox. No point in buying these studios and having them work on XB1 games, better to have them work on next gen stuff right away so MS can come out with a strong 1st party lineup.

good to see MS finally come to the realization that the hardware doesn't matter as much as the games...you can have the most powerful console in the world (Xbox X) but it won't matter if you don't have any good exclusives to pair with it...which is why Sony is still king

It kinds does matter about how good your hardware is. Lets all remember that had 2 things to fix... 1. Hardware specs were low when Xbox One released. They fixed that now with X1X and I am sure won't make that mistake again. It cost them enough. 2. They needed to fix 1st party games and they just started that process last year buying all the studios. They'll be able to make use of that during the Scarlett era.

what's even in game-production that will entice buyers to purchase this instead of the next PS ? afaik, nothing.

I'd imagine that's why they're waiting until 2020 to launch, so they can try to come out of the gate with a decent lineup. A new Halo around launch will definitely get some attention and if they can front-load the launch lineup they'll be in a good starting position. Of course, it also depends on how arrogant Sony gets with their next system.

Just bought an xbox one x for backwards compatibility but none of the games I wanted work. Heard rumor next console version might have full backward compatibility.

After getting the xbox fired up i went through games and demos. all games I wanted I already had on my superior pc. There was nothing unique I was interested in. My Playstation has some fun Japanese mech and story games.

Sony still holds all the trump cards- Bloodborne 2, Last of Us 2, Horizon Zero Dawn sequel etc
Yeah, Microsoft is going to need to show up with more than just Halo 6. A slight edge in hardware specs alone doesn't sell consoles as we've seen from One X regularly being on sale for $349 with a bundled game and still struggling.

And with MS firing first on nextgen and locking themselves into a position, Sony will undoubtedly use the extra time to bump PS5 specs last minute, a reverse of the PS4 Pro / One X sequence.

Yeah, Microsoft is going to need to show up with more than just Halo 6 I'm afraid. A slight edge in hardware specs alone doesn't sell consoles.

I'll take a less powerful PS5 over this new Xbox because the exclusives will be so much better...MS is still relying on an 18 year old game instead of developing new titles

Yep, like I added in my second paragraph there, I wouldn't be surprised if PS5 ends up the more powerful console simply because Sony will have 6 extra months to tweak their BOM and supply chain for a little spec bump, since MS will have locked themselves into a position.

Xbox has someone in charge who knows better than to use DDR3. Just this fumble and the insistence on the Kinnect gave the PS4 a huge leg up. Maybe this time they can turn that around. But as has been said, they need AAA exclusives.

Microsoft would have to be stupid to release a new console just two years after the overpowered X.

It won't be out till 2021, even if Sony releases their PS5 next year. At that console release cadence, can they really expect to make their money back on the tiny number of console sales, and the marginal amount of games?

You can't expect Live revenues to cover the costs of rebuilding the thing every two years. And MS only announced the X incredibly early because they got blow away by he Pro...tyhey would never do that if thew PS5 released next year.

MS has already read the writing on the wall as far as charging a premium for their X console. On Amazon (and every other big box store), It's now on permanent markdown to $12 under the PS4 Pro. While the Pro has not dropped in price since it's release three years ago.

Braaaah, this is Halo, the ultimate trump card.

Not since Bungie left. Since then Halo sales have been in a free fall.

Halo 3: 14.5 million (last Bungie game). Was basically a 360 system seller.

Halo 4: 9.41 million, even though twice as many 360 systems had been sold by 2012.

Halo 5: 5 million. Even though this was released the the same console lifetime as Halo 3 was for the 360, it sold relatively few systems.

The PUBG console exclusive sold three million more than Halo 5, and you could already play that on PC for a year. Halo is headed straight into the toilet, just like every other MS game franchise since the end of the 360;.

The only thing Microsoft is doing is creating the best multiplayer platform, and charging people exorbitant fees for multiplayer. It's the only profitable thing about the One at this point.

Unfortunately, they will be forced to price their consoles well below Sony if they want to rely purely on third parties to move consoles. Because a console with zero installed base is a console with zero 3rd-party interest.

Not really. Microsoft wants the One behind them. That being said, higher end specs alone won't sell as easily in late 2019 as it did a decade ago. Even with great backwards compatibility because graphics (and gameplay) aren't improving at the rate it once used to. Regardless of launch titles the 360 was a huge jump over the PS2/GC/Xbox which is partially why it sold so well. The market just isn't dazzled by graphics anymore because we're not seeing big jumps that affect gameplay.

People will happily buy a new console just for the hardware performance upgrade alone, but they won't rush out to the store to buy it ASAP unless there are good exclusives. And everyone knows the PS5 is coming along so even if the Xbox Whatever comes first most will holdout for the PS.
