Disney Removes Advertising from YouTube in Response to Child Exploitation Videos

There is simply no way for Google to hire enough people to police the comments section across all videos. Short of removing comments completely—which would be foolish, as others have stated—the only option I see is for Google to put the onus of comment moderation on the video uploaders. It's something uploaders should be doing anyway, especially people who upload videos containing children. Surely these uploaders are aware of the kinds of sickos who peruse the internet.

These sick assholes are why we can't have nice things.
 
As a parent of little children its disturbing the lengths pedophiles will go through to get what they want. Some are in plain sight too. Had a good friend that was sentenced to ten years by the Feds for downloading/uploading child porn, is now released and is a registered sex offender. Came as a total shock as he was a good friend, young, successful and dating hot girls too.

read the article and watched the linked video. The guy who made the video is a snowflake looking for attention. There is no pedophilia ring, just some sick fucks who are pointing out time stamps on vids where for the single frame or 2 the home made gymnastics or home video shows the kid in a compromising possession. I guess we should ban Seventeen magazine because some sick fucks can jerk off to that too?

I bet the guy who made this video gets angry and throws a shitfit when the checkout person says happy holidays instead of merry Christmas lol

I think this sort of thing needs to be handled on multiple fronts. Yes, Youtube could be faster/better, that'll always be the case. People need to have conversations about uploading content with their children. Quite frankly, I never have seen the need to upload any family video, no matter what, to any sharing site. All the precious moments I did capture are on media at home. My daughters will on occasion send me some video of them being a goof or showing me something via snapchat; I'm not completely behind the times, but that's not a permanent video that pervs can easily get to, comment on, timestamp and share.

I guess I'm not a fan of sharing, even though I did watch a lot of Sesame Street in my life. Not everything needs to be shared, not everything is precious, and you're not going to be a superstar because you upload your life for others to pick apart.

I do not see a direct problem with the original videos the pedophiles are linking too, so I can't justify telling Google that YouTube is the problem. Monetized or not, profitable or not, I appreciate YouTube as a service and I feel that Google deserves support, not condemnation, from the community. Google should be able to reach out to the community, the government and maybe even law enforcement to find the solution that everyone can live with.

It seems obvious to me. There's a problem, yes, but it starts and ends with that pedo that made those links. Let's discuss it with him.

You make good points about things most of us take for granted these days. YouTube does indeed do a lot of good. Professor Messer helped me prepare for my Network+ and Security+ exams. Now it's part of my prep for the CCNA. Also, where am I going to be able to watch the Kennedy/Nixon debates on demand?

Perhaps YouTube needs to be separated from Google so it can have its own independent leadership that can focus on its issues more clearly?
 
YouTube is going to have to choose the option that gives them the least liability. Like any competitor will have to as well.

So completely removing comments won't impact their market if that's what ends up happening. If they force uploaders to moderate their own videos, most will likely only approve a tiny percentage regardless of content because who has the time? So same effect.

I don't really see any way around this. The benefit isn't worth the legal liability of being on the hook for the comment content.
 
The thing missing from this thread is applauding Disney for this. Disney had done a bunch of stupid shit lately, but this is a seriously good thing. Numerous YouTubers have been calling this kind of crap out for a long time and getting ignored by YouTube. They can't ignore this. This isn't just a problem with what they mention. There are also tons of videos on the ASMR category that are just blatant child exploitation. Paymoneywubby (who I largely can't stand) started making a big deal out of this months ago and literally had his video demonetized but the source video stayed online and monetized. It was pretty damn blatant that Google was willing to ignore it because the videos were huge and were going to silence anyone speaking out. Well they can ignore content creators but they can't ignore major advertisers.
 
Remember when we used to tell parents to control what their children watch on their computers? And here we are, everyone feckless piece of shit that squirted out a kid now wants all of us to do their job for them.

The problem, if there is a problem at all, is people. People will find anything sexy. Someone might find your 90 yo grandma sexy. But hey, the obvious solution is to just delete any video that features a minor, even if it appears for 1 second in the background.

I think Disney didn't see Rule 34. That rule applies to ANYTHING. A video with a fully clothed ugly kid in it is going to get someone off. Nothing short of castrating every guy is going to stop this.

Again, removing comments will have a huge impact on their market. There's more than a few sites wanting to be the next Youtube, and they don't necessarily need ad revenue from Disney.
 
I don't get it. I did the youtube search for both popsicle and yoga challenge, and I get videos of people eating popsicles and doing yoga and gymnastic things. I think a lot of people just have dirty minds and think of sex no matter what they see. I've never seen anything more risque than what we used to be able to see in the Sears Catalog. Girls wearing tight clothes? Sure, But I can see that walking by my house every day out on the sidewalk. This isn't porn.

These are probably the same jerks who think it's funny to laugh at anyone saying the words 'duty', 'Uranus', and other things that 13 year olds giggle at.

I tend to watch youtube a lot when I'm waiting for people, and I've never seen any porn on it.
 
Just a thought...They could have comments auto disabled for everyone. To enable comments, you have to log in to your account and actually turn comments on. Parents don't want their kids reading comments, don't enable them, or don't even log in. People want to comment or read others comments, they log in and enable them. Put the control with the user and YouTube can remove a lot of liability without removing the comment section.

I suppose another option is to require people to confirm their real identity before they are allowed to comment and upload videos.

Maybe. Probably. But what do you suggest? If advertisers are fleeing—whatever their reasons—then YT cannot continue to exist as is. I would rather have YT in some form than not at all.

Maybe, but that seems like a gut feeling rather than a factual claim. I'm not against people having to divulge personal information to comment on the internet, in fact I think it would do a lot to curtail the vitriol online.

Nope, can't watch videos at work. I was just going by the headline. I thought these coaching things were only happening on facebook and ask.fm or some shit like that. It might be on youtube too, but I expect them to be rare as an unicorn. Removing the ability to comment videos because of it, is a terrible idea. And seems like more an excuse than a reason to me.

I totally agree that this is a sick world. I have 5 kids myself 3 of which are daughters. I can't fathom why people get their jollies off over young children and yet we have to fight them to keep our kids safe. Its disgusting.
Im just saying that using Twitter as an example people just don't give two craps unless they are trying to hide something. That behavior is probably more evil than being open about it.
