Friend building new Ryzen 2950x system. DOA no matter what.

Friend is building a new Ryzen system. I have 0 experience so I am asking the [H]ive mind for some suggestions.

2950x CPU
asrock fatality x399 mobo
corsair vengeance lpx 3200mhz ram - Listed on the Hardware compatibility list


System is DOA. It will not boot other than slow flashing red light on the asrock board. He's tried two different power supplies, both brand new. Another set of ram. Two of the fatality x399 boards and just tried a gigabyte. All the same thing. No power up, no post, no work.

He did use the bios update procedure for the asrock and it appears to update, he gets the green flashing light and it completes according to the manual. Even with latest bios, no boot.

Anyone have any helpful thoughts on what might be wrong. At this point I think it has to be the CPU or CPU installation but he is using Kyle's install video on youtube so I doubt he's doing that wrong.
 
Either hes installing the CPU wrong or he has a dud.

In all honesty after 3 boards I would review install procedures and call AMD and have them warranty the chip.

The chip MUST be installed in the plastic cartridge or else poof.

I'll add in 20 years plus of building machines. And as a teenager in the mid 90s I worked in a shop and literally built my first 5 to 600 machines while in high school and was paid to do so. I've only seen one bad CPU and it was an old Celeron 300a.

So it's possible hes installing wrong or he won the bad lottery and got a dud chip. Happens.
 
Sounds like he sent the CPU back to Amazon and ordered a 2970wx to try with next.

To the OP I recommend your friend watch the plethora of YouTube videos on how to properly install the CPU from opening the box to torquing the clamp down.

It will save him/her serious heart break.

Threadripper is unique in how its placed in the socket and locked down.

He's watched several and I told him to watch Kyle's video of him installing it on an MSI board. He said he is following those to the letter.

He just built a 2700 system on an x370 board and didn't have any issues at all but that still uses a cpu with pins if I remember correctly. He's getting pretty frustrated with the entire thing. I was going to offer to try to put it together but I think he wants to get it done himself.
 
Quick one to rule future issue, is he observing proper ESD care ? Grounded wrist wrap, no paper / cardboard around the building area and ideally a ESD mat ? Also, low humidity make it worse.
Once that's in check, CPU is the last component not replaced so yeah as other pointed out...
 
ESD was good. He gave up. New CPU, same crap. He's sending it all back and building an i9-9900x system instead.
 
That's a depressing result. Can't help but wonder what the issue was. 2950 > 9900
 
people claim there doing everything correctly but in reality they fucking shit up over stupid shit...as in there is no way all that stuff is bad. first tip is buying an asrock motherboard...anyone with good judgement would use exact same board kyle used;)

Yeah I would HIGHLY recommend he just buy a prebuilt. Please for the sake of sanity at this point Haha

Yeah, he's not a novice by any means. Not sure why he had such a hard time with Ryzen in this build. I feel like it was cpu install error but I can't say for sure because I wasn't physically there. We shall see how the intel build goes I guess.
 
Yeah please let us know. If he watched the Video Kyle made on how to install a Threadripper CPU it covers everything.
 
im curious if the merchants he sent the hardware back to for rma found a shit load of bent pins?:wtf:
 
Sounds like my "tech" friend who couldn't get a crypto miner running.

He finally gave me parts and I gave him back a miner...... Which he promptly messed up while "tweaking"

What is the flashing red light? Is it the Bios Flashback update light(right next to the CMOS battery)?

Assuming it's the bios flashback update light, he probably was attempting to install the wrong bios, although from what I've read the bios LED shouldn't flash red, it should either be solid green or solid red or off.

Now I'd go about this in stages and check if it booted after each one:

1. Many Ryzen Asrock boards have a bridge bios. That is, a bios that you need to update your board to, if it's on the original version, to then update to the latest version. The x399 fatality would need to be updated to Bios version 2.10 before it can be updated to the latest version of 3.50, for example. This would be crucial to make certain the 2950x functioned on the board, and if he's not updating the board correctly, it's unlikely to boot.

2. Make certain both CPU power connectors are connected. There are 2 on the board, a 4 pin and an 8 pin.

3. I would probably have removed & reinstalled the CMOS battery.


Other than a dead CPU/Socket, those are probably the only things that would straight up not allow the system to boot without a Dr. Debug error code. Would've included RAM, but even bad RAM would've come up with a Dr. Debug error code.

I’d bet a dollar he had most the WC for the threadripper and is waiting for a new intel block.

Sometimes people know just enough to be dangerous.
 
wow, tough crowd.

Threadripper build was going to use two AIO coolers. One on the CPU and one on the GPU. I don't remember what GPU he got but I think it was a 2080, just not sure on brand or if it was a hybrid setup or he bought a separate cooler. CPU was going to use a Corsair H150i. He said that he was going to keep the AIO style GPU but decided to just go with a new tempered glass case and real CPU watercooling. Might as well make it an even bigger project according to him.

As for the jab at leaking watercooling, you have no idea why his threadripper system didn't work. To assume he has no idea what he is doing and that it will leak is just silly. Everyone who has done watercooling had to start somewhere. He knows how to start the loop separately and check for leaks. The fact that he had issues getting the threadripper system going has no bearing on how successful he will be with watercooling.

I think this thread has run it's course. Thanks to those who had constructive replies.
 
Thought I would update the thread one last time.

His Intel build was a success. He had to buy different ram as he was having compatibility issues, but things are 100% now with the i9. He did two separate loops with hard tube in a Thermaltake A500. I got one pic from him of it when he was leak testing the CPU loop but nothing of it finished.
