Do you need to be able to boot from it? I have a brand new sealed Apple Superdrive, it works in Windows when you load the Bootcamp driver, just can't boot from it on a non-Mac PC.
I use one on my main PC as it has no 5-1/4 bay for an optical.

Ive used them for installing OS and have booted from them.
Not sure if I have the usb cable though, its the standard a to b type
