Too risqué, too sexy: fight-tourney EVO president Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar decided to kill a Dead or Alive 6 promotional livestream this week after two Japanese models began jiggling their goods to mirror the fighting game’s physics. Producer and director Yohei Shimbori didn’t help matters when he used the title’s free-cam mode to show off characters in compromising positions. “The DOA ad that aired on our stream does not reflect the core values of Evo or the FGC. We ended the stream temporarily to protect the integrity of our brand. We sincerely apologize to our fans.”

What began as a simple stage show demonstrating the fighting of Dead or Alive 6 veered off the rails as the women on stage modeled in clothing that had been torn up to show their cleavage and bras. While waiting for the demo to be ready, the models hopped up and down to mimic the traditional Dead or Alive breast and butt-bouncing physics. It seems the final straw for the Evo Japan broadcasters, however, was when the Dead or Alive 6 producer showed off the game’s photo mode by pausing an attack while the characters were locked in a pile drive move that, when paused, looked like a sexual embrace.

I didn't see anything wrong with that video. It's Dead or Alive game... it was never about the fighting, right? We've had Mortal Kombat before the silly 3d fighting games took over on PS

Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar doesn't sound Japanese to me. Not sure it has infected them

Indeed, clearly the Japanese director/producer and models were fine with the content, it was the non-Japanese management of EVO that objected. As Derangel said, it probably isn't "SJW / political correctness" so much as it is EVO's prominence, branding, and "respectability.". If I recall, in the past EVO was often cited for being both somewhat inclusive (ie the larger amount of FGC members who are not caucasian or asian), but has also been deemed "toxic" for rather severe trash talk and announcer discussion (ie I remember a year or two back there was discussion over the use of the term "raped" for a particularly imbalanced match), relative lack of female participation, and more. EVO being the "face" of competitive fighting games in the West and the big esports money boom seemed to encourage the homogenization of the industry pushing for "advertiser friendly" culture and appearance.

This is not to say that Japan is not going through a period of "cleaning up/censorship" of certain elements itself, seemingly in relation to the upcoming 2020 Olympics, but that doensn't seem to be the case here.

This shit is getting out of hand! I'm sorry, but DOA and like games are targeted to an audience, not for anyone.
Sooner or later we're going back to the days of mono-boobs and two beds in the parents' room again.
2020 people, lets make mankind great again!

I guess i just don't like them apologizing. I'm fine with them saying "we felt the models overstepped what we asked them to do, so we pulled it".

It's their product / show / vision, etc. - and they can run it how they want. That's fine. But as noted, the game itself does have wiggly jigglies all over the place, so the frenetic backpedaling seems out of place.

Being on the cynical side, I half believe they cut the video feed just to drum up buzz. Make folks ask "What are they pulling this for?!?!!? What is this game about!?!?!?! etc etc

The girls were literally pulling and tugging their shirts to reveal more cleavage and framing their cleavage with their hands. I can totally see why EVO would want to cut that. And Personally, am absolutely ok with that feed being cut.

Good point. And they go on record as being against such horrendous debauchery while we all clutch our pearls and fan our faces. And everyone proceeds to watch it again.

EVO has been shit since they stopped playing on actual arcade machines. They just want espn money, I stopped caring when they introduced commentators for the finals who didn't know shit about fighting games to please their overlords

What do video games and cleavage have in common? Apparently neither are acceptable for adults. I really hate how pussified this generation has become. You don't see Europe with a stick up its ass over nudity. It's borderline acceptable to flash your tits in most places. America really has it backwards when it comes to being accepting of the human body. The funny thing is people don't realize that by trying to shun or cover up such things creates an even worse environment because you're sexually repressing people. Break out the burkas.

It really depends on how you look at it. Parts of Europe are a lot more "free" when it comes to nudity, but they're not all totally sexually liberated either. Miles better than the US, however. The US is still clinging to puritanical ideas regarding sex and nudity and it definitely not only holds us back socially but also really highlights the insane hypocrisy involved when nudity is considered "sinful" but wanton violence is a-okay. The entire slasher film genre is a great example of that messed up ideology. Doesn't help that we've had generations of fear-mongering from religious and government organizations designed to oppress people and make everyone afraid of everyone else so we only trust some "God" or the government.

I think the poster who pointed out that we were okay with seeing a woman's spine ripped out, but balk at seeing a jiggly boob was spot on.

That's some messed up prioritization.

Yeah, I was adding to that point in a bit of a long-winded fashion talking about some of the reasons why the US is the way it is in terms of nudity and stuff.

It was being streamed through twitch and this chances are that twitch management grimaced or something and Evo did a knee jerk to appease them and keep their working relationship.

Yes the same twitch that has infinity plus one "gamer girls in yoga pants having cable management issues".

The hypocrisy and double standards isn't limited to just violence - cardi b won a grammy. The only standard is what makes these people money.
