German overclocker Der8auer got his hands on a Radeon VII GPU to see how much extra performance he could squeeze out of it, but apparently, there are some major issues in the review drivers and/or firmware for the Radeon VII. Any kind of manual overclock, however minor it may be, seems to drastically reduce performance, yet an auto overclock via Wattman sees some real performance gains.

Check out the results in the video here.

Temperature doesn't seem to be a factor since the card was running under dry ice. GamersNexus, who talked with Der8auer, had similar issues with all the overclocking and monitoring software they tried. Thanks to cageymaru for the tip.

Problems with the ATI, er uh, AMD drivers? I'm shocked. SHOCKED.

It always makes me sad to see how Der8auer and GamersNexus combined have less subs than Jayztwocents

When you blah blah blah just so you can have videos over 10 minutes long, of course viewers will watch something else. I had to skip 3/4ths of Der8auer's video just for him to get to the point. Digital Jesus is the same way. At least he marks topics with time stamps. Digital Jesus has a really bad case of the diareah of the mouth. Jay is more mainstream, and he doesn't repeat himself as often. Just my two cents...

Its a rebrand of the Vega Instinct card, its a compute monster, stock though it loses to a 1080Ti and the 2080 from almost every benchmark I have seen, they apparently had to use the Graphite thermal pad due to the uneven die GNexus did apply paste, Until they get the Drivers and firmware a bit more matured I can't see gamers wanting to buy these cards, haters aside and the die hard AMD fans, you just get more with a NVidia 1080TI or 2080.

On the plus side Vega.....ehhh...7nm 25% performance increase is great, Navi will in all likelihood be a lot better of an arch. so the benefits should be exceedingly better, I think if AMD can bring 60fps 1440p max settings to the base budget model GPU on the new arch they will have a clear winner, the unknown is NVidia and what they will do, 7nm double/triple Pattern or wait for the EUV/UVL in 2020, they are starting the 5nm EUV/UVL process thus dropping the prices on the 7nm to affordable terms that we *MAY be able to afford as consumers, if they drop die size with the already proven arch AMD might have some troubles ahead, either way 2020 will be great Navi 10, Navi 20 from what I understood was supposed to be this card but they scrapped the idea and went with another idea from a guy who retired which was the Vii(stopgap until Navi), so depending that may or won't show its face(keep in mind that info is from leaks so it could be BS about Navi20).

Here's Hoping and Praying Navi will be what AMD fans want and need(well everybody comp needs to force the prices down a bit).

But like you said, Digital Jesus has time stamps. I feel like every video with more than 1 topic should have time stamps so I appreciate he does this. And sometimes he barely talks about something though I only know that because it's something I'm interested in and then it gets almost no coverage :( lol

Jay also does a lot of mythbusting experiments and watercooling, the other 2 talk an aweful lot, I lost a lot of respect for the so called expert Digital Jesus used in one of his videos that had a chemistry degree yet can't understand the difference between Aluminium(Element) and Aluminum(AlloyAmalgam we use every day) and there is actually about .2-.4 percent of the alloy that is Aluminium for the record. Almost any Chemistry major with a background would and should know that.

I read the same swan song with every AMD GPU launch: let's, hope, no, let's pray that the next one will be better. I didn't have too many expectations, however, at the very least I was hoping for a working product.

We don't need more armchair analysis or more opinions from armchair experts. No matter how many die shrinks, these POS architecture will not perform much better. It is old and inefficient. I wouldn't get my hopes up for NAVI either. AMD needs to stop loosing people to Intel and other companies and hire more software engineers to introduce usable feature sets like CUDA for example. A GeForce GPU would a be useless paperweight, a very expensive calculator, without the awesome software stack that sits on top of it and makes it work. Oh, and AMD dear, do proper quality assurance before release. Thank you.

Edit: At $499 this GPU would have made sense. Anyone could stomach the bugs and the noise levels at that price point. In 2017 I picked up two GTX 1080 Ti FE cards for $699 each, and they still perform better than this. AMD needs to get their act together when it comes to GPUs, just like they did with their CPUs.

The industry is made by Armchair Warriors, Basement/Garage Warriors, What AMD needs is fresh blood, the same old same old isn't doing so well. NVidia has said themselves they are more a software company than a hardware company these days, also *any hardware is an expensive paperweight without the proper software.

If you don't like AMD then Hope and Pray for Intel as they once did have a great graphics division and I'm not talking about the iGPU's, but before that.

Hardware is anyone's game at any time, anyone can strike out and some more than others while some hit a home run. Brand loyalty is like sports team loyalty totally pointless, buy what and who gives you the best bang for your buck at the given time you are building or upgrading and for whatever specific use cases you have, its as simple as that.

Haters there is a door to the left it leads to sites like Wccftech and others where there is oversaturation of forum warriors that troll and have little to give and much to gain.

The bottom line is if you need a compute card this is the one for you, If you need compute and gaming it may be for you, If you need a gaming card this probably won't be for you. AMD always leaned a bit more on the Compute side and it never translated to FPS in gaming as scaling greatly.

Driver is forked. We may never see this card make its potential even with all the nice pcb decisions.

I fear i will have to buy this one none the less, i really want Navi but i cant wait way past summer for that, so i hope AMD can fasttrack Navi and get it out there, all i ask for are good 144Hz 1080p gaming and a kick in the ass to my video editing powers.

It seem strange the driver are his rough at this moment in time, i think i would go and get a grip of the ears of my driver department and do a "shame on you" on them,,,,, maybe even get some new brains in that DPT.

For the price there is no reason to buy this over a 1080ti or RTX 2070. AMD must be smoking crack if they think people will stump up over $600 for a card that barely beats an already overpriced RTX 2070.

Funny, I just bought a pair of them...So did a lot of others. There are use cases, aka plenty of "reasons to buy this over a 1080ti or RTX 2070"...If it isn't for you, then do not buy it?

Feels like a rushed launch of a product that was never meant to be sold for the consumer market, projected to be a place holder, and acting like a joke.
I'm in deep inner question about wheter or not launching this joke revested as a place holder was the best decision.
Deeply disapointed by this one, never expected it to be even an 2080 direct competitor, but to be a decent, consistent, beautifull, silent, out of the box experience, but again, undervolting, loud fans excessive heat, bad drivers...
Well at least my RX590 has been flawless and performing great on the titles i play and want to play.

The only reason to buy this card over a 1080Ti is that you'll not find a BNIB 1080Ti anywhere for a reasonable price. The second hand market prices have gone up, and new stock is nearly non-existent.

I look forward to this card come April, when it should have drivers and 3'rd party coolers so this thing isn't thermal throttling at ungodly noise levels, I will make my decision around that time. If they haven't sorted drivers and availability by then I will write this off and just get the 2080, which is sad because I wanted an all AMD system for coherency purposes.

You can buy 1080Ti's for $500-$550 all day long. Conversely you won't be able to touch a Radeon 7 for under $900-$1000 due to the low production numbers + fanboys rewarding scalpers.

Agreed theres plenty available here right on the forums. I passed up a $525 MSI 1080ti Duke like a week ago.

No not every benchmark. next time when you make a point lets stick to facts shall we? There were games where it beat the 2080 stock. When you started off with that, I lost interest in what you had to say next. lol.

Why are't we using power play tables or manual registry changes. Vega 10 needs these for successful overclocks in sure Vega 20 will too.

You know you can't CrossFire them, right?

I am aware, but thank you for the heads up in case I did not. I have a use case for both cards, but if I cannot get some full cover blocks, I may end up selling one. The second one will not be opened until I explore the WC'ing angle a bit more.

Context....."From almost every benchmark" the key word is almost which is not "all" as you so aptly put it, perhaps you need to understand facts before calling someone else out.......

I didn’t know that? They’ll never crossfire or the drivers just don’t support it yet?

AMD was puttting the coals to Nvidia at the release of the RX580 talking how two RX580 in crossfire would beat Nvidia’s top card for hundreds $ less and how they aimed to support Crossfire long into the future because they supported their products and the technology better than their competition. This publicized about the time Nvidia was publicly starting to to depreciate SLI’s future and I took it as AMD poking a bit of corporate finger at Nvidia for dropping inferior SLI while they were going to push the superiority of crossfire. Anyone else remember that? Crossfire did typically work better than SLI, and so I was excited they were going to continue to support it. My crossfire experience with my Fury X was great and I had no notable issues. My brothers SLI experience with his Nvidia 970 cards was so poor he said he’d never SLI again.

Then Crossfire didn’t work on Vega for months after launch —- unannounced to launch day buyers of course — me being one of the people burnt on that lack of advance information with the purchase of my pair of Vega 56 which got 10 FPS in Battlefront while Crossfired. Vega was the first card past RX580. So that promise to continue to support Crossfire didn’t even make it to the launch of the very next card!!! They got Crossfire working I heard, but I no longer owned the cards when they did.

Now Radeon VII is the first card past Vega and they did it again??? Hopefully it’s only temporary...

AMDs marketing fell flat in a hurry if Crossfire is truly not to be supported into the future? That kind of stuff makes me mad. It’s opportunist and anti-consumer to trumpet support of something, and then drop it hardcore the very next product cycle.

Someone was saying it's DX12 mGPU or Vulkan only, but I don't remember the source.

Also...it's a monster of a card for compute, so if that's your workload this is what you want, if your a gamer and do compute workstation work it becomes a depending on you decision with your workloads, if you are a straight gamer and streams then you'd be a bit of a fool to buy this over a 1080ti or a 2080 let's be honest even with all the hate, you get the performance + RT+DLSS+.265 Video decode which is more for your money.
Hopefully Navi will be better, but they can only do so much, it's still Vega Arch and it wasn't great for gaming, and yes you can under clock and do all the voodoo and rationality you want to try to justify it, 25% is good just not good enough at that price point for gaming/gamers alone. AMD needs more incentives like tress fx to add to their ecosystem and arsenal.
There is only so much brand loyalty arguments you can spit out till it makes no sense. I get people have their favorites even I have my go too's but if a product isn't great I don't sugar coat it, Nvidia could have done better with RT but they didn't.

DLSS is worthless beyond 1 benchmark and 1 game the same goes for Ray-Traceing. if i was in the market for a card i would get the R7 as with drivers and future mods to the card it will only get better. NV has to do a lot of leg work to get all the rtx features supported by game developers that are busy optimizing their next batch of games for navi console generation.
