Looking at seasonic 850w for a build\upgrade

whats the difference in the gold, plat, and tit series besides the price?
 
If you talk about 80 Plus efficiency ratings... it's moot.
Efficiency is what energy is lost inside the PSU itself when working. Gold may have 90% at given % load, Platinum may have 91% etc. Finally, the differences in you electricity bill would be so negligible that it just plain doesn't matter IF you don't use your PSU/computer at maximum load 24/7.
It just matters if it's at least Bronze and not just 80 Plus - there the difference is usually not so negligible. But Bronze and up... not really.
Being Silver or Gold or Platinum doesn't imply anything about the quality of the PSU at least for what it's worth - quality outputs, regulation of voltage, protections etc.
 
Efficiency at various loads. Look up "80 Plus" on wikipedia.

"tedych" was I think trying to say that you don't buy higher efficiency models because you expect to save money over the long run, because you won't. You buy Platinum or Titanium either because a) you're trying to minimize heat output, and perhaps fan noise, or b) you just like the idea of having a super efficient power supply in your rig.
 
There are differences in voltage regulation, noise suppression, components used, and warranty. Go look up reviews of the particular lines you are looking at, and decide what is important to you. [H]OCP and Jonnyguru are two of the best PSU reviewers.
 
I am quite partial to Seasonic (old) version of the 550-850 watt that have SSRxxxRM as their model number, mainly because they "give you" the extra cpu power connector where their newer Focus line (to the best of my knowledge) got rid of such, yes it is only for "overclocking" but it is nice to have it there and all.

I have the 650-G (SSR650-RM) very nice unit, handles itself well, legacy be damned, it is a solid unit, the 550 and the others in this lineup specifically all test very well, as well as being priced fairly does not hurt anything either.

I forget the original question, but in terms of quality based on bronze vs silver is it worth to pay more etc etc.

Are absolutely worth the extra cost from a reputed maker, 550-650 range is ample for most builds and a decent quality gold semi to full modular PSU is ~$150 shipped unless you want extra pretty fancy RGB crud or super crazy top end wattge.

Not that I am aware of. Though do seem to remember Jonnyguru did a review. Cannot find it. Not top shelf quality but decent. And with the rebate it may be one of the best bang for the buck units in the 850w range. Know you are looking at Seasonic but figured I'd throw it out there.

It's Probably ok to Good....My older 750w CoolerMaster GXii Pro...is something a little nicer going on. That IS Dual Rubycon front and Rubycon/Chemicon Secondary...it's Fine and Strong still. I would expect no less.
With Today's Systems a good 750w is Plenty in Reality.
 
I bought the Seasonic Titanium 1000W at Christmas for a I9 9900K build. It is silent and has performed well but there has been a strange smell coming out of it since day one. Voltages are good and everything checks out ok but the smell is still there after 1 month. Not as strong as before but still enough to notice. There were a few posts I found about this and most were that some Seasonic's would do this during break in but would quit later on. I hope this is the case.
