Is the RTX 2070 safe from space invaders failure aka 2080?

So like an idiot with money to burn I've been looking at used 1080ti's and RTX 2070 cards. In general I keep coming across used 1080ti's that were on mining duty, which I'm not really interested in at the $500+ price point. So I started looking around at 2070's. For the most part, they are overpriced, but there are several I found under $500. So I know the 1080ti is like 10% faster, but for same or less money than a used up miner, I could get a new card with a warranty. I actually found a really decent deal for even less, and almost pulled the trigger, but then I started googling for reviews of Gigabyte RTX 2070 cards. There are quite a few user reviews indicating they are getting the space invaders or BSOD crashing. I thought this was limited to RTX 2080 or 2080ti but I guess not.

So does anyone here have firsthand knowledge of a 2070 failure?

I have a 1070 and I'm itching to make the jump to 4k and I know the 1070 can do it but will not be optimal. If I could sell my 1070 and upgrade for under two hundy, I don't think that would be a terrible upgrade. Unless I'm buying a time bomb... my 1070 has been rock solid since day 1.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Look at the reviews, lots of crash complaints

edit - also I haven't seen any updates on resolutions for the 2080 problems other than people just getting RMAs for same cards and likely same problems? I know Kyle has a deep dive project running, but haven't read any updates on that for a while.

I wouldn't purchase the Gigabyte model, I've heard bad things about them having a bad batch of Micron memory. But that's just me.

Also, I just received a 2070 from an online givaway, been using it for a couple of days after replacing my RX 580, it is awesome! That being said though, mine doesn't have a warranty due to being a giveaway item. So I hope I don't have any problems with it. :nailbiting:
 
I'm curious, what res are you ATM with that 1070...that's an awesome 1080p high frame card and a awesome mid-high 1440p mid/high frame card. if you meed to buy the monitor to achieve the "4K_bliss" Id say spend the cash on the monitor first and chase it with the video card as you can afford it...I'm sure to be wrong but that's my advice.

Have this card exactly.
There is a BIOS with which you can raise TDP to 230W https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/204764/gigabyte-rtx2070-8192-180918 (note: it says 240W but it does not go more than 230W in eg. furmark)
In games I sometimes see power draw above 200W so it is worth to flash it.

My OC is +200 core and +750 memory. So far so good.
 
I'm still rocking a beast of a 1070 and @ 4K isn't too shabby. My clocks are +110 on core and +350 on mem. On air doesn't max out over 60c. Still on the fence for a 2070/2080, but I can't get past that ray tracing bullshit.

I have 2 x 1440p monitors. They're fine, but I've been itching to go 4k for a bit. Yeah I know I don't "need" to, but I don't think "need" is really anything anyone has here on Hardocp, LOL. At 1440p there really is no need for me to upgrade, the 1070 does fine.

Yeah I don't care about ray tracing either. Until I see more stuff using it, it's just another Hairworks or Physx.
 
I'm fairly sure I've seen a failure or two posted for the RTX 2070 but not anywhere near the catastrophic failure rate of the 2080 /Ti (in which case I'd give better odds to a mined-on 1080 Ti).
 
My first MSI Duke 2070 failed almost immediately with space invaders. Newegg sent me an immediate no questions asked replacement that I've been using for maybe six weeks. Absolutely no problems with this one. It runs at 2055mhz OCed with +700 on the memory.

I was considering a Vega 64 but went with the 2070 mostly due to the tons of games Nvidia promised back five months ago were getting DLSS. So far Nvidia has failed to deliver at all. I can not use DLSS at all because nothing at all actually supports it.

You can save $100 by going Vega 64 and it will come with three games bundled not bf5. But you'll get a blower card and those things suck. Or blow if you will .

This is not true. Final Fantasy XV supports DLSS. But whether or not to buy this title based on the quality and performance gain (or lack thereof) is a question that should be asked in it's own thread.

FF15 only supports DLSS in 4k. I don't game in 4k. Run any other resolution and it does not work at all. Also still today on Nvidia's own page they have a big list of games that are supposedly going to support DLSS. The list is still there. How many of them actually do?

Oh my bad, I didn't know that "only games that support DLSS at non-4k resolutions" was a prerequisite for your "no games having DLSS AT ALL because nothing at all supports it" statement. ;)
 
I saw on YouTube where this guy reduced his artifacting by reducing memory speed by 500Mhz with absolutely no difference in gameplay FPS. It might be worth a try to reduce a chance of having your card go kaput.

AFAIK the issue is no more and it mainly affected the GTX2080Ti.

I think the issue resolved as well, but there may still be older stock at some retailers that is affected. I doubt Nvidia issued a recall for these, since I know this issue was still reported many weeks after the problem was acknowledged. And no it wasnt just the 2080ti, but a lot of 2070s as well. See Nvidias forums.
 
TLDR - mine didn't space invaders, it just didn't do anything :(

Well I went to pick up my RTX 2070 today from my local Microcenter. Gigabyte Windforce 8G GV-N2070WF3-8GC. Get home, pull my 1070 and swap this beast in (easily 2 inches longer than my Asus 1070) and it's jacked. I can only get to post/bios with HDMI (none of the displayports do a damn thing), windows shows a loading splash screen and then black screen after that. Safe mode works, tried uninstalling and reinstalling latest Nvidia drivers (they were already current). Nada. The wife needed help with something for a minute, so I left the black screen to go help her for 10 mins. When I got back, powered down and pulled the card. The metal backplate on the thing was SCORCHING hot. Too hot to hold. Slapped 1070 back in, and after a reboot presto good as new.

This f*cking thing is defective and going back for a refund. This was not the $500 video card experience I desired. Guess I'll keep the 1070 for a while longer.

I have done open box specials from Microcenter my last 3 video cards and all have been fine. This one's a dud. The $80 savings is lessened if I have to RMA the thing on day 1.
