Three of the world’s largest messaging networks will soon become one: Mark Zuckerberg, who owns WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger, has decided to merge the “underlying technical infrastructure” of all three, which boast more than 2.6 billion users combined. Users will be able to communicate across the platforms for the first time, but the services will continue to operate as stand-alone apps.

The plan — which is in the early stages, with a goal of completion by the end of this year or early 2020 — requires thousands of Facebook employees to reconfigure how WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger function at their most basic levels, said the people involved in the effort, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the matter is confidential.

So there's actually no changes, at all.. It's just a share button most likely.

Either way... How about no.

And continue to I will never use anything Facebook touches.

well there goes WhatsApp then. Way to go application developer that sells out. Why do company's do this? Buy a brilliantly done application only to run it into the ground and snuff it out. ffs it was the only good IM application left!!

Turning your monopoly money "valuation" into a billion real dollars sure is an incentive to sell.

Yeah i know. it was a rhetorical whine. I can't blame them... but given how full on that dev was about how he was good with privacy and security his application was and dedicated to keeping it that way... yo'udu think he could have at least cashed in then created another one so we didnt get bloatwared and buyer-dev-ruined and have zero good options left! One can dream!

Not even Oculus?

Wire is awesome. Made by people who made Skype. Secure, has all the multimedia features, GIFs, video calling, everything.

Signal is great and Telegram is at worst a lesser evil than what will become of WhatsApp

Signal

there you go

WOW! 2.6 billion (I cannot fathom a word that is not positive here). I am continually stunned by the (and again, I just cannot come up with a positive word) of people.

One clue, and I'll make it easy....M-O-N-E-Y.

As long as (just can't find positive..DOH!) people keep supporting Facebook, they will continue to suck up anything that shows promise of more data collection.

Signal the field newspaper of the Nazi whermacht,,,,,, no thanks just on that relation.

I use mouth to ear, encryption not needed.
You mean then most ethnically diverse fighting force the world has seen?

Signal isn't perfect and the server source isn't open. Ensure your messages are deleted or they are stored there.
Retroshare for pc to pc is best, oss, p2p and heavy encryption.
Will try wire thanks for the heads up!

Gonna have to get off that train then. Dam shame too, I use it to communicate with family overseas. That'll be an uphill fight to get them to change to anything else, because they already all use facebook. Guess I'll die.

And why do people have a problem with this? Honestly it makes perfect sense to me. Why not replace the very back end so that all 3 messaging services use the same core system and just have them behave differently on the surface for customers to see? They already own all 3 so that isn't changing, they are just stream lining the back end so that instead of making 3 different servers they only have to worry about 1 server with features from all combined into one.

The weird part about this is many guys follow people in Instagram they aren't technically friends with and don't want to see the Instagram of their friends.

A lot of guys at work I know follow Instagram fitness models of both sexes. Men to get workout advice from and women to basically oogle. It's not like they have ever had a conversation with either of these groups or people and wouldn't want them showing up on their friends list after the merge or even a list of who they follow as the wife would murder them.

Merging whatsapp and Facebook makes sense as whatsapp is a great voice messaging program. It barely touches my data plan for an hour worth of talking.

One ring from three? We need a brave hobbit to toss the thing into the lava pit.

Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Zuck has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over.

Maybe if you all quit ignore your mother and grandma this wouldn't have happening LoL

Well, goodbye Whatsapp.

explain why? Whatsapp has been owned by Facebook for years. Nothing changes, you still have your WhatsApp app just like today, they are going to fix up the back end. So what is different about today's version and the next if the only thing that changes is that you can talk to people in 3 different programs from a single app, especially since you still have all 3 apps still if you want to use them separately?

Maybe you read the news report you know why just a BIG HINT integration them all

I am sorry but I am going to assume that English isn't your first language. That or you are under the influence of something. I think you are trying to say that if I read the news then I would understand why it is bad that they are integrating them all (or in other words what they are trying to do).

Again I make my same statement. All three are already Facebook companies. Nothing changes. For people in the USA. This would be like an announcement that as of next Monday all K-Marts will be renamed to Sears Department Stores. We could all sit here and complain about how that is terrible that Sears is going to ruin K-Mart and how Sears can't keep themselves in business so don't need to try to buy out K-Mart and destroy them also but that would be a silly argument since Sears already owns K-Mart already and thus a name change does nothing other than changes what they see on the sign. All Facebook is doing here is instead of having 3 systems that do that exact same thing they will tie them together in the band end to make it cheaper for them to add new features and manage the systems. Which from a business stance makes perfect sense.

Given that Facebook already owns and has owned each of these for years, whatever they want to do that is shady or data gathering, they are already doing. So it doesn't matter if they record everything from all 3 platforms separate or from a single system, either way they are recording all your data. At this point it is like answering the question do you want to be caned 6 times, 3 times twice back to back, or a half dozen times. If you already use any of these 3 services, you already have to worry about the stuff you hear about in the news.

English is my first language your just miss the big picture to integrating and it nothing to do with Facebook own them it more about taking all them app as combining them one services so it no long separate platforms that what people don't want as shady or data gathering I'm sure there they all ready know everything.

ooohhh thats right.i recall someone mentioning that a while back and never got around to checking it out! i hope its got as nice a UI as WhatsApp (nothing worse then a painful UI).
