Overpowered i7 Laptops, gtx 1060 6GB (Insane DEALS). 15inch (16gb, $799) and 17inch (32GB, $999)

Do these have an sd card reader?

Can someone with the 8750 version so me a favor? Run cinebench r15 on battery and then plugged in and post the 2 scores? Curious if it is power limited on battery

Might be a stupid question, but is the 1060 desktop spec?

Yea same specs. But due to power limits. Boosts will be little less. Standard it runs around 1500ish on boost but with afterburner set to 175 it boosts between 1600-1700. Mostly in the mid 1600s. Overclocking the memory too high does lower the boost I think probably due to power limit set but I am now to run +175 on the core and left the memory at +250.

thanks. What are those modes/how do you select them?

thanks. What are those modes/how do you select them?

Its set with the Gaming center software.

This is with a fresh install and I am using gaming center software from eluktronics. I still have the original disk in so I can boot back to the stock windows and that has OP gaming software which I think gives more power to the CPU. and the temps do shoot up in to 80s. The cinebench score is around 1120 or higher.

On the fresh boot disk with gaming center software from elucktronics website it does use less power i think and runs cooler thats why my cinebench is little less.

Since this is an OEM chassis the software is cross compatible but they might be configured little different when it comes to power configuration.

Overpowered is suppose to update their website with Bios and Drivers soon. So we will see. With Overpowered gaming center software I did notice it will boost higher on the CPU since it is configured with more power and also runs little hotter.

Fellow [H]'ers that ordered one of these. How's the screen bleed?

There's a review on Walmart site of the $799 model with a photo of the backlight bleeding looking pretty awful. Hoping it was an isolated case. It's an outstanding value otherwise. Am thinking about getting one even though I just bought a MSI GF63 to mess around with, perhaps gift to my brother.

NKD did you use just any DDR4 2666 16GB stick or a specific one?

To be honest. Just checked cuz you asked. I have a black background and watched this 28 second all black screen video called backlight test lol. I didn’t see anything that stood out.

Grabbed the cheapest one I could get my hands on. Got the patriot 16gb 2666 stick. But anything with same size and same speed should be fine.

Thanks for the kind reply man. Is this with the brightness/backlight all the way up? Just want to see what uniformity is like. Would you mind snapping a photo?

Below is that it looks like on the screen all black at full brightness. My phone looks all yelllow so it looks totally different than how I see it. Like all the brigthness is yellow lol. So I did a print screen which kinda looks like how it looks to me. Bottom picture is with my phone. Phone doesn’t look like it looks in person though. It’s weird. Pretty much phone makes everything yellowish tint that’s not there. May be iPhone doing its trick.

I will direct everyone to this video for anyone considering these...

You can literally buy a Dell G3 or G5 on Dell's outlet right now for $850 that has the same specs at this. So I would stay far far away from these if you value support of any kind. Not to mention that there are Lenovos and other brands that are close to this price point that will get you close to these spec.

I would rather spend an extra $200 eveb on another brand so I can have the piece of mind of getting a GTX1060 laptop that I can get support for...

Oh, and the sound that keyboard makes would drive me nuts after 2 seconds of using it.

Just wanted to give my feedback. got this laptop now. Keyboard sound is overblown. Its nothing like your desktop mechanical keys. Now I could get a high-end microphone on a youtube video and slam the keys and make it sound louder. But honestly, they are fairly quiet don't have the loud clicking sound at all.

Gaming laptop for $800 and 17" for $1000. Definitely great for someone who needs a mobile laptop and doesn't want to spend $1,000 more on some MSI or Alienware or Asus. I can see some nice christmas presents this year for people. I wonder if the Bios can be dumped and TDP modded (by unlocking menus) with AMIBCP 5.02.0023 and then reflashed with FPTW64. If IMON SLOPE is accessible and can be set to <50, this would prevent all TDP throttling completely.

Funny a $800 laptop beats my old GT73VR even with a 7820HK running at 4.8 ghz. Only good thing now about mine is the 230W TDP modded GTX 1070. When overclocked, that scores as high as some lower spec 1080 MXM cards in Fire Strike :)

Can a GTX 1060 run all games at ultra at 1080p these days?

Mostly yea. Man I actually got the 17 inch too. Just got it today. Honestly while 15 inch is metal, I like the smooth finish on the 17 inch around the keyboard. I might be keeping the 17 inch. I actually placed the 17 inch order and then cancelled it but it still shipped, still says cancellation pending. But man even though 17 inch is plastic build the smooth feeling around the keyboard is really something I appreciate and top is plastic but it looks like brushed metal anyways. I might be keeping it.

When I pulled the 17 inch out of the box almost thought it was 15 inch. Really slim overall and slim bezels. 32gb ram and 2tb drive easily makes up the 200 dollar cost and 17 inch screen with slim bezels looks pleasing. Really digging the 17 inch right now. lol. Might be a keeper. 80% keeping the 17 inch. Would have never known had it not shipped. It just feels light, slim and room around the keyboard and smooth touch is something I really missed on the 15 inch lol.

I picked up one of these purely for gaming. My thoughts:

Pros-

2 real dimm slots. 2 m.2 slots. 1 2.5" bay. NVME capable. There isn't a damn thing to complain about here.

Chassis is rediculously easy to work on. No stupid clips. Just a dozen or so easily accessible screws and the bottom comes right off exposing all the naughty bits. RAM, m.2 slots and 2.5 bay are all easy to get to. CPU/GPU cooler looks like it would be a simple repaste job.

Screen is fantastic. Mine has very minimal backlight bleed but it looks fantastic actually doing anything more interesting than staring at a black screen. One of the best I've seen in a long time and I spend my days staring at a MacBook Pro. The refresh rate is noticeable for sure

6C/12T CPU speaks for itself. I seriously question the person who needs more in a chassis this thin.

GTX 1060 is the full 6GB version. Known quantity that matches up nicely to the 1080p resolution.

The above 3 items means it does it's job of gaming very well.

Mine accepted the cheapest stick of DDR4 2400 memory I could find on Amazon. This one in case anyone is looking. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079H9ZPYK/

Dropped the recent $99 1TB SSD drive in for game storage. Also worked without a hitch.

Machine isn't loaded with bloatware. In fact the application that controls the key backlighting is the only thing I've noticed at all.

The RGB backlit keys are pretty annoying out of the box but can easily be adjusted to something a bit less "FAAABUULOUSSS." BIOS control of this as well is a nice touch.

Touchpad is pretty good. It's not a MacBook but it's far better than the shitty windows touchpad you are expecting. A bit of a moot point though given the machine's intended purpose. Nobody is using a touchpad to game with.

Plenty of ports. USB3, USB2, HDMI, 2x Mini DP, USB C, SD Card, 3.5mm plus AC Wifi, BT and a real live ETHERNET jack. Everything is there you would want. I can't think of a single thing that I'd actually use that is missing or even poorly placed. USB ports up front, power and display in the rear. Headphone jack on the left to say out of the way of the majority right handed mouse users. Really a superb port selection and layout

Thermals are pretty good out of the box. Mid 70s after playing Titanfall 2 for a few hours.

Machine is quite slim/light for what's inside.

Onboard Intel Wifi and BT are both rock solid.

Keys are not nearly as loud as some people claim. You could type the new King James version in a library without anyone being bothered, well other than you because the keyboard itself.... well keep reading.

Cons-

Keyboard is cramped for sure. I'm a mid 50s touch typist even on a shitty MacBook Pro keyboard and this thing is worse by far. I've dealt with some pretty lousy keyboards (have I said MacBook Pro enough times?) but would not want this as my daily driver. Thankfully I really did buy it only for games and for that it works fine but I'd honestly rather do heaving typing on just about anything else.

Fans are noisy under load. I play with BT noise cancelling headphones so this isn't a practical con for me but if you don't then you're going to notice because....

The speakers suck ass. They are laughably bad. I've heard budget monitor speakers that sound better. Seriously take advantage of one of the numerous connectivity options and use some decent cans.

Default ram config is 1x16GB sticking you with single channel memory. Would much rather have had 2x8GB. 16GB is plenty but you're going to end up spending more money to get dual channel. I'm running 32GB of RAM that I feel is almost completely wasted on the intended purpose of this machine. Nobody is buying this to do development work or run VMs on.

It's pretty apparent that support isn't a priority here. If you're a person who puts food on the table with their laptop then this probably isn't for you. Dell next business day on site support this isn't.

I could easily kill a man with the power brick but anything with a decent GPU is going to be equally power hungry. Still a consideration if you're going to be transporting what is otherwise a (relatively speaking) fairly light laptop.

Logo is stupid. Wish it was a decal or something I could remove.

Verdict-

Overall I think this thing is a steal. It has its quirks but at the end of the day you're getting a shit ton of horsepower for not a lot of money. The screen is great and I think the GPU is nicely matched to the resolution. The thermal solution seems like it has some more to give which likely means the GPU will as well. You aren't going to hook this up to a 4K display and melt faces but at the same time it's not going to struggle keeping 60FPS going on AAA titles at its native resolution either.

If you already have a "pays the bills" primary machine and are just looking for a gaming toy then this is perfect. If you're trying to buy a single laptop to cover all things I'd honestly spend a bit more for something else. At least something with a better keyboard. The other cons can all be solved one way or the other but you're stuck with the keyboard.

I have a Gigabyte Aero 15x with that same panel, that I paid roughly twice this price for, for about the same specs (albeit 1 year ago, but this year's equivalent is about the same). This is a crazy deal. But I still love my orange little monster!

How well is it running on the 2x 16GB? What kind of games do you play? I mainly play CPU-intensive titles like PUBG and I am looking to get dual channel. Like you said.. I'll never be able to utilize 32GB of ram... I am thinking about selling the stock 16GB stick and just getting 2x 8GB, maybe something fast. What do you think? Can anyone recommend some ddr4 dual channel kits? Thanks in advance

No performance complaints at all. I considered the 2x8GB route myself but too lazy to sell 16GB stick mostly. The i7-8750H is no joke. I wouldn't worry one bit about cpu heavy games.

Been rocking mine now, purchased the Corsair ram I linked earlier and its been running in Dual channel, fantastic performance and absolutely love my laptop! :D

I would definitely buy one of these. Seem pretty solid
They are. Shame the desktop market was so bad for them, they just didn't know what they were doing there, but the laptops are solid

yea because laptops are almost all prebuilt by tongfang when it comes to major components. They just had to add the hard drive, memory and wifi card. hard to really fuck that up lol.

Just a heads up. If any of you have a Microcenter in your area or even 5 or 6 hours away, many of these stores have open boxes on Powerspec 17" for around $900 that have incredible specs. And Microcenter's Powerspec is actually a Clevo.

Intel Core i7-7700HQ Processor 2.8GHz; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB; 16GB DDR4 RAM; 1TB HDD+250GB SSD, 17" GSYNC IPS

Our Kansas City store has 6 open boxes. I looked at some of the other stores and they have open boxed as well.

That's a really good ass deal. That said, the i7-8750h chips are much much faster, plus have 2 more cores, if you plan on using the system as a workstation primarily and gaming secondarily, might be worth getting the newer chip.

Did anyone mention where this comes with a couple free games? From the looks of it, its got a code for PUBG which you could probably resell to bring the price down a quick $20.

Good luck. Intel codes are worthless. The code I got kept getting error something wrong with it and contact support. Contacted intel twice and heard nothing back. Lol! A lot of users are having the same issue.

This thread went from the OP of a great laptop deal by Overpowered to "hey, look at these other unrelated laptop deals if you get this random open-box microcenter in store pick up!!"
