Automatic updates.

hi, I am trying to change how automatic updates is configured. I want to control what gets updated. I have followed 3 sites on how to do it similar to this site

How do I change the settings because it isn't the same. My gf tried it on her win 10 and gets the same results as i do. I run win 10 as well.

Looks like you have an old version of Windows 10. They've been streamlining the interface over the last three years.

What are you trying to control? For consumer editions of Windows 10 (Home, Pro) updates are mandatory. Pro will let one delay the inevitable but destiny still arrives.

It's been a bit since I last checked but couldn't you tell Windows you have a metered connection and it will not download updates?

I am using win 10 home 64 bit version 1809 build 17763.292 which I am pretty sure is the most recent.

With home you can (unless they have altered the deal) go into settings and tell it your on a metered connection. Which should stop windows from downloading updates. But that will not allow you to select specific updates. I believe you can also set an "active" time frame in which windows will not auto restart on you.

Otherwise ya windows 10 home updates are mandatory, and not under user control. And as someone has pointed out Pro doesn't offer anything further other then the ability to defer updates.

One easy way which will strenghten your security is to set Windows/Defender Firewall to Block outbound connections by default. Default configuration after installation is for Private network profile to Allow outbound connections.
Even with the default Allow you can block svchost.exe process in the firewall (Windows Update runs inside this container) to access the internet and no win_update checks will succeed. When you want to update, disable the blocking rule, update, enable the rule and you are done.
The drawback of setting the firwall to default Block is you have to add Allow-rules for every program or executable you want to connect to the internet, as well as few system rules such as to allow NTP (UDP 123), allow LAN (192.168.0.0/16), ICMP Out (ping) and ... I think this is all I have on my side.

If you want control first make sure you have the pro version of Windows 10 (you can get pro keys for less then 5£$) if you have any problems with it accepting the key disconnect the Internet if that also fails you need to use the temp windows 10 key once it has upgraded you can use the new 10 Pro key and then restore internet (most listings will say you can't use these keys for upgrades they work perfectly fine if you disconnect the Internet)

Goto Windows update and set windows update to get stable updates (or more or less well tested before you get them) click adv set to "none targeted" delay feature updates to 100 days and normal updates for 15 days

If you want to control when updates are installed use gpedit and set it to ask before "download and install" untick maintenance option or it just download and install when it wants again (don't pick download and Then ask before install option as it will install them any way) do note use your own antivirus as Windows defender is linked to Windows update and using gpedit to make it ask before download and install will make consent popups for defender



No need to mess with firewalls or other none standard ways

Pro can do it very easily

Go edit and set it to ask before download and install

(I still recommend setting windows update to none targeted 100 days delay + 15 day delay on normal updates, this makes sure the mass of home/pro users who have not changed there settings have tested the windows updates before you get them)
