Do you use all the motherboard standoffs in your build?

Do you install all the motherboard standoffs in your builds?

  • I just use the 4 in each of the corners

  • I use the 4 corners and a few extra where I think it's needed

  • I use every damn one for MAXIMUM motherboard rigidity!

I use a the 4 corners plus a few extra where needed method but curious what other people do?

Life is too short to screw in every stand off in addition to screwing every support screw into said stand off.

I voted for the middle option - though really it depends on the tray and mobo. I sometimes use them all - sometimes the corners plus around the CPU/Dimms/PCIE slots. In short any place I think needs to be safe against pressure/weight.

I stll feel weird not using paper washers between the screws and the motherboard

These were probably omitted because people didn't use them and because of cost reasons. I wouldn't worry about it though as the area where the screw holes in the motherboard are placed are built in such a way as to avoid needing to use those. That said, I used them back in the day. Each and every time.

Clearly you haven't used the weighted Logitech mice with every single weight in them!

Yes I have. In fact, that's how I would set them up.

I use all of them. On some mb they have holes in the corners and I use plastic stand-offs for that.

Uhm. As a system builder have an important PSA to all of you:

Standoffs are extremely important. Do not skip them. For one-off testing or troubleshooting in an open test bench, sure. But in an all-day rig: standoffs provide electrical grounding through the case and important structural rigidity. Without them, components can warp the board and isolated static surges can wipe out important SMICs.

Yeah ... it’s especially important if you’re moving the PC around.

I use "almost" all of them. I've had some ATX cases that don't have a 10th standoff (4th along the I/O side of the board). So in that case, I only use the 9 I can screw in.

Damn, with the aggression shown to use all the standoffs, Id like to change my answer.

Life is never to short for screwing

It's been known since the dawn of time that screwing is the purpose of life.

My PC building is an important part of my life, so I'm going to screw all the standoffs! :p

Yup. I use every damn one of them. And I do make sure the rubber support pads are
present under the RAM slots too.

Only four corners? That is just plain lazy. We want MORE screwing not less.

Hmm I can't remember the last time I had a case that did not have all standoffs preinstalled, I do put screws in all the places I have access to.

I use all of them unless there are some in the motherboard tray that are missing. I have been known to mark, drill, and tap missing holes in the motherboard tray.

I voted for "All of them & muh structural rigidity", but I am an ITX guy, which is technically "Just the four corners"...

Damn, I am the Alpha & the Omega...

ofcourse I use as many as I can to match the motherboard holes. lol. That is the only time I skip it if I run in to odd size board that doesn't match all teh standoffs. But normally yes. As many as I can use.

I always fear doing damage in any way so I use full anti-ESD gear along with all standoffs. I also pull out when I screw and the wife is on birth control pills for extra redundancy. Better safe than sorry.

Wow super surprised to see so many people using all the screws.

I only use maybe 4 or 5 and its never been an issue for over 15 years :p

I would think far more ppl at the [H] would have more screws lose, honestly who do you guys think you are fooling?

Now seriously, raise your hands, who has had a screw rolling around in their case forever they could not find but could hear rolling around every time you moved the box?

Used all if it lined up with the MB tray holes, plus used plastic stand feet for those areas that didn't and I thought the board needed extra support.
Had a Gigabyte MOBO for my Q6600 that flexed like crazy, was worried it would snap a trace if it bend too much inserting something.

Not me. I watch what I'm doing and when I drop a screw, I find it and put it where it was supposed to go.

Good advice when assembling anything in general! And when disassembling put 'em all in a bag so you don't lose 'em!
