DAN HSLP-48: A powerful sub 50mm heatsink

For anyone who is wondering, the ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ac isn't compatible with the Black Ridge out of the box. I had to cut 3 fins off of the VRM heatsink and mount my Noctua A12x15 slightly off center to get the mounting holes to line up. Can't say I'd ever thought I'd take power tools to a motherboard before. The stock 92mm fan would have had the same issue if not worse since that fan is screwed in and can't be repositioned as easily.

I ordered my Black Ridge from OCUK so I guess I'll have to wait to hear from them on the heatsink solder issue but for now I'll keep using it and try to tune my undervolt for a 9900k.

z06blaze: Did it not work to shift the fan some mm more into the ram direction? Btw: Mount the fan in that way, that it suck air through the heatsink, this will reduce temps.
 
hot tip... dont ruin your cpu cooler or your vrm heatsinks... if u use a 90/120 mm fan blowing directly on them, u dont need them at all...
I agree. Just remove the (basically) ornamental heatsinks if you’re using a top-down cooler.

Or if you really want you can get some small, adhesive backed copper heatsinks, they're usually like 5mm x 5mm x 10mm. Perfect for VRMs. But yeah if you're not OC'ing you'll probably be alright without them
 
Did Alpenföhn change the design so much? I thought the original design had compability included as a factor.

Has someone started a google spreadsheet for compabilty issues?

I'm currently doing fine with my A4 and one of the Asetek coolers, but the Black Ridge would help in getting rid of the additional M2 SSD cooling which is necessary and additional HDs which are still lying around. ^^

Maybe and I only can say maybe if you can't look through your bottom heatpipe, your unit is not faulty (third heatpipe start counting from left):

But keep in mind ~5°C only for BlackRidge with 120mm. With 92mm fan the diff is 10-13°C.

dondan I shifted the fan towards the RAM 1-2mm after getting rid of the few fins that were in the way since I still needed slightly more clearance but it wasn't close to fitting without removing those fins and the cooler itself would have hit since the VRM heatsink is so tall on that motherboard. I think I set up the CPU heatsink to blow out of the case and the 92mm Noctua fan as an intake but I'll reverse the fan directions if that will improve temperatures. Thanks!
 
I just sighted down the heatpipes in the base plate of the cooler. Lots of light all around each pipe. If you think of the cross section of each pipe as a clock there only appears to be solder between maybe 7 and 8 o'clock. Otherwise it's light all the way around each pipe.
 
FWIW I don't have my case yet, but I have a blackridge and the asrock motherboard. If I set the cooler on top of the cpu spot on the motherboard with the 92mm stock fan it seems to fit just fine and clear the heatsinks. Maybe I'll find out differently once I get down to putting things together.

EDIT: I also appear to have lots of daylight around most if not all of the heatpipes. I bought from OC uk.

havelock99 I thought it would work at first too with my ASRock Z390 ITX after mounting it, but I realized I had to rotate it 90° since my PSU connectors were blocked in that orientation and I'm not sure if it would have fit inside the case and next to the power supply otherwise. That's when I realized the conflict with the VRM heatsink and had to redo the thermal paste again. The heat pipes are coming up from the bottom of the case and make the cooler makes a 'U' shape vertically with the case in my current configuration.

With a 92mm fan the motherboard power and I/O might have enough room or maybe you're seeing something I didn't. If you can get it to work without touching the VRM heatsink and blocking motherboard access (especially with a 120mm fan) that'd be great to hear.
 
I have the Supermicro C9Z370-CG-IW motherboard and I'd like to know if the MEM-DR416L-CV02-EU26 memory sold by Supermicro (they appear to be Micron chips) is compatible with my board. The motherboard's manual mentions that it supports only unbuffered, non-ECC memory and these modules are VLP ECC, according to the site. Any help you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
 
This memory is UDIMM ( U=unbuffered ECC) so it should work. Only registered ECC creates problems.
 
If Overclockers UK is affected by these manufacturing issues, someone REALLY should be talking to them at this point. I mean, their site still lists 4 in stock despite the probably issues.

If I have to send it back as a return (and therefore have to pay return shipping), there's pretty much no point. I bought two (to the US) and return shipping would probably cost just as much as the amount I'd get back.

Overall just not at all impressed with the way Alpenfohn is handling this.
 
I used the contact forms today to reach out to overclockers UK and alpenfoehn. I'll update here if I hear back.
 
Overclockers UK replied and said they have been told by Alpenfoehn that only 1 out of 100 coolers are affected. The offered an RMA if I wanted and suggested just to monitor temperatures.

A small update regarding my BlackRidge. Got it out of the Dan A4 yesterday, 4 out of 6 heatpipes weren't soldered correctly :eek: so I sent it back to alternate.

Interesting sidenote: I put my old C7 back in the case, but this time without the mobo's i/o-cover, results as following:

Due to it's heatsink fins facing the i/0-cover, the mass amount of hot air is now coming out of the case at that point. Of course there is some hot air rising to the upper part of the case, but it's way less than with the cover in place. And low and behold, 8,6% less rpm at roughly the same temps. I kept it that way ;)
 
Yeah I never used the IO shield. You need to squeeze every degree that that can out of this case for the "extreme" builds. (Like you would with any ITX build; not a knock on the A4 at all.)
 
Is it safe to order from OCUK? Has the problem with soldering been fixed with the newer batches?
 
In theory it should be safe if you get a newer batch, but who knows.

For what it's worth, when I contacted Alpenfohn, they told me that it was 1 in 10 that had issues (which they stated as only causing a difference of 2-3C), way higher than the 1 in 100 that Overclockers UK stated above.
 
Returned mine today and alternate, mine wasn't soldered correctly too.

I've made some rough mock-ups to see how many boards can handle this properly in something other than A4-SFX and it doesn't look good:

Note the fact that the cooler reference image is a bottom rendered shot that seems to be in perspective so the fin stack is further away meaning it's slightly smaller than it actually is (unless I greatly messed up matching the cold plate size to AM4 socket size), but it still shows some issues.

There is only one board vendor (gigabyte aorus) that has AM4 board that does not have its pci-e slot obstructed when fin stack is facing it.

On all of the intel boards black ridge seem to extend over the motherboard when the fin stacks are facing IO plate.

On all of the intel boards black ridge extends at least 2 cm over the motherboard when the fin stacks are facing away from PCI-E slot.

It seems like this cooler will work either when you don't need to use the pci-e slot, when you are using A4 or similar cases where the riser bends right around the pci-e slot, or when you are using a case that has a recess over the IO plate so mostly mass produced cases that don't have the PCI bracket going outside of the case.

This needs a thorough compatibility list.

I have a black ridge and the asrock z390 and everything fits fine in that case.

The issues are with cases other than A4-SFX/Ghost/Kolink Rocket/other back-to-backs. This cooler was designed with those in mind and cases using space above the pci-e slot will have issue with that.

For back-to-back layout cases it should go without problems as long as the riser has a tight bend around the slot that won't interfere with fin stack going there.

Other than that I remember someone had issue with asus' board that has a shroud over motherboard IO and it interfered with fin stack.


BTW: I sent the cooler back because of the recall and caseking refunded my payment because there won't be a replacement. I asked about it through the mail and that's what they stated.

It looks like /u/volopasse called overclockers UK ~7 days ago and they said the issue has been rectified. I can't find any other sources that mention this other than the few people contacting them directly.

If anyone else has more info I'd love to know before ordering one for my Sentry.

Update: Ordered one anyway. I'll update on comparison temps with the noctua 120x15mm fan that I currently have on the LP53 heatsink.

Can you mount the cooler such that the fins are parallel with the RAM slots? For both Intel and AMD?

I'm thinking it would help exhaust air from the top easier.
 
Got a call from alternate today, where i purchased the black ridge. It seems that the new charge is comin in at the end of february ;)

To be clear... Do you mean that there is supposed to be an updated cooler that will be coming in February or that they are simply going to be restocked?

The one I ordered from Overclockers UK January 7th performs similar to my LP53 w/ noctua A12x15 fan. However I configured the fan to blow downward so the noise is more. For this reason i would assume the current design performs fine, but i wasn't sure if it could be even better and they are planning something I don't know.

The first batch of produced black rdige coolers had quality issue, this issues should be resolved with the new batch of the same cooler

Ahh okay. I thought that was just the initial shipment and that the issue was already rectified. Looks like I'll be ordering a second one in February! Haha.
 
Let's hope Alpenfohn gave as much attention to soldering the heatpipes on the next batch as they did in producing these videos!
