Jeff Bezos announced he was splitting from his wife of 25 years this week, which has put some Amazon investors on edge. Divorce laws in their state of residence (Washington) suggest MacKenzie Bezos could receive a whopping $68B in shares if the pair decided to file there, granting her a significant, equal stake in the company: “If MacKenzie Bezos is given a large block of shares, she could have a big say at the company.”

Not long after Jeff Bezos tweeted the news of the couple’s breakup, The National Enquirer published the results of a four-month-long investigation into the Amazon exec's alleged relationship with news anchor and pilot Lauren Sanchez, which the tabloid claimed involved "raunchy messages and erotic selfies." It's unclear how those revelations will affect the divorce proceedings, and TMZ reports the couple did not have a prenup. But this much is clear: By year's end, Jeff Bezos will likely be only slightly richer than the Romanoffs.

While I know nothing of her, I rather strongly suspect he did not marry a dullard. She's likely got the same goals as him - let's make more money and keep this ship a sailin', but maybe I'll be in the Pinta and you'll be in the Santa Maria instead of snuggling on the Nina.

That sounded way creepier than I intended.

Jeff believes Amazon will fail at some point in the future, so why not pursue happiness now.
Gates stepped down from Microsoft so he could pursue other ventures. Wasn't worried about becoming richer.

Once you get that kind of money, it's all just numbers on a computer screen.

Good evening, Agent 47. We have received a new contract from an anonymous client, with a substantial payout attached to it. This is an opportunity ICA cannot ignore and so as our most distinguished Agent, the task falls to you to carry out this important assignment.

Your target is McKenzie Bezos, notable socialite and wife of the cardboard box tycoon, Jeff Bezos..

He could have picked someone that was less gross with bolt-one and filler lips.

Yeah, that was my impression as well.

Mistress to the richest man in the world... that's not what I would picture.

It would depend more on the influence of other major holders as this will result in the balance of power shifting away from Jeff at a board level. As many have already pointed out Mackenzie's share of the net Bezos holdings only amounts to 8% which isn't enough to have major sway over the companies direction.

Best thing they can do for themselves is at least keep it amicable and she continues to vote with Jeff, when your that fucking rich there's little incentive to upset the apple cart.

Once they split the x-wife should call amazon CIS and have everyone with the last name Bezos banned from amazon

Watches AMZN...I'd like to pick some up as I think they have a lot of growth potential in retail (online and physical). There is a lot of speculation about their advertising platform growing substantially in the future as well.
This could be an interesting divorce - as someone else above said, I'd assume she'd be in favor of continuing on their current trajectory (making more money).

Remember, after T2, all but the upcoming terminator movies happened because Sarah divorced Cameron and took the rights with her

"Wife of 25 years"... Amazon was founded in early 90's? So she's been there pretty much from the start, from a quick google search. Not exactly a mistress.

Does make you wonder what's really going on though.. Sad.

I doubt Amazon will fail in his lifetime. I can't speak to the retail/video part of the company (though I think they'll make it), but AWS is the breadwinner and AFAIK, it's reigns supreme in the world of cloud computing.

From my understanding amazon was the key player in online sales and it's diminishing. Myself and others are sick of the prime membership with 2 day shipping no longer being a 2 day reality. Now with no membership fee one can get 2 day shipping from various sources. So yes in his lifetime he will see his company start to suffer from rival companies as the shift to compete with online sales\fast delivery has already started.

Im concerned this will drain resources from Washington post and CIA current resist mission as they focus on character assassinating his exwife.

Also downgrade on looks.

I think that 60-70% of homes have Prime. They're not hurting from that perspective and again, the big money maker is not sales, it's AWS. I don't shop exclusively at Amazon, but it's convenient and I could live without prime and still shop there. In fact, I generally did that for years....now I justify it because of the video service that comes with it. When I lived in MS, I thought it was a waste, because I could get most orders 2nd day without prime (and sometimes next day).

It's a good thing that a very small portion of Amazon's profit comes from Online Sales then. It's there many other ventures such as AWS that are bringing in the most profit and also growing at crazy numbers.

Best theory I've heard is that divorces are a very convenient loophole to get away with some insider trading. During the splitting of assets, the company stocks are court ordered to be sold off and profits split between the two. If the stock takes a big hit immediately afterward, both parties are safe because they were "forced" to liquidate.

Alexa "After Jeff Bezos' divorce what will his net wort be and how rich will their Attorney's be?":p

Investors: "Women stakeholders are fucking dumb and have no idea what they're doing" is INDIRECTLY what they are saying.

Very valid point that I never really thought of.

Considering we are at the cusp of the ending of a bull market, a recession is very soon to inevitably follow. Well said.

i smell a conspiracy. fedex+trump is gonna take him down..
fuck bezos and his propaganda machine+retail monopoly

AWS is the real Amazon of today. Everything else keeps them visible to the everyday consumer.
Jeff doesn't have to be around for AWS to function.

Divorce laws are archaic.... She didn't work for that money, why should she be owed it?

Behind every great man is a great woman. The idea is that she supported him through it all. We don’t know what she did to help.

It was also pretty rare back in the day for people to accumulate as much as they do now... so maybe a bit archaic.

Enron comes to mind.

Jeff Bezos' Divorce Could Mean Big Changes for Amazon

Big changes might be OK. How about they get divorced, and then decide to force sellers to remove all the search tags that don't pertain to the products they sell? That'd be awesome.

How about they get divorced, and then someone cleans up their API so that when you're searching for help on an AWS function your first hit isn't a description of the function from 2011 that was redacted 3 years ago?

How about they get divorced, and someone finally figures out how to sell The Belgariad on Kindle in the United States?

How about they get divorced, and when you search for shirts that are 2XT (T for 'TALL', jackasses) you don't get shirts that are only 2XB? (B for 'FAT').
