No. Absolute and total horseshit.

I was reading this web page and it says that you should replace the AC power cord of your computer every 18 months. Is there any truth to this?

https://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/57820.aspx

"It’s also worth remembering that the cable you use to connect your PC to the mains electricity outlet on the wall can degrade over time, so make sure you change this cable every 18 months or so."

Well, if that's true, I have a box of about 100 of them that I'll sell you for $500 shipped so you always have a fresh one.

Maybe if you are using an 18 AWG cord on a power supply that should have a 14 AWG cord. But in that case you should have used the correct cord in the first place.

I have several hundred as well here at work. Although when we move to a new building I probably will have to either throw these away or pay to have them recycled.

The cable itself could (will) deteriorate over time, undoubtedly. Every cable does. But this is a matter of many decades if the cable specs are not exceeded (currents).
What's more common is the plug at the computer side. It's a "female" plug and its internal plates are subject to metal fatigue where the contact between the male and female plates can become less strong especially if the cable is plug/unplugged often.
I tend to replace my cable(s) when I replace PSUs, 5-8 years or something like that - every (good) PSU comes with a power cord. The old cables can be used for smoething less important or less important machines, although I don't remember any incident where the power cord was at fault so far.

What a steaming crock of crap LOL. I've told people to replace power cords that were loose and not a good snug fit but never over the age of the cord.

i keep the power cable with the psu it came with. never had so much as a blip. some of them are 10-12yrs old. laughable disinformation.

One of my systems is powered by the original cable from an IBM PS/2. The model m keyboard from it is dated 1988. I dont remember what happened to the system itself

If what that article says is true, then you should also replace all of the wiring in your house every 18 months too, just to be sure. :cautious:

Side query: Where do these article writers come from?

Im not even joking when i say that my main PC is plugged into a NOMA power bar that my grandmother bought in 1985 for her Commodore 64 computer, still works fine. And ive got a few power cords that are circa 1990 still working fine.
