As an FYI, if you install the Epic Launcher store, they're giving away a free game every two weeks in 2019. This week is Super Meat Boy.

Epic Games announced that it will give away a free game every two weeks in 2019; means, anyone who installs the Epic Games Store on their device may grab these games free of charge and add them to their account.

The promotion starts on December 14, 2018 with Subnautica and is followed on December 28, 2018 by Super Meat Boy. The two games are fairly popular and have been well received.

This is great. Already got Subnautica and Super Meat Boy. What Remains of Edith Finch is next. These are great games!

What a great way to expand their platform by giving out two solid games so far, hopefully they will continue giving out solid games.

Very nice, my son will enjoy these free games on his new rig we built him for Christmas since he only has 1-2 games on Steam and Subnautica on Epic Launcher since it was free last month.

Interesting they are doing this. Wonder if their motivation is to eventually compete with Steam / GoG?

Brilliant marketing move to get end users onto their platform and build a library to keep them coming back.

Edith Finch has some absolutely brutal moments. I had to take breaks.

trying to create an account but found myself in some kind of password reset loop. They send a code to reset pw and it shows invalid each time. Seems half baked for me so far.

No, It's not half baked.
It's the internet. Servers go down, admins forget a period in a config file and go on coffee break, an intern rebooted the pw authentication server by accident. AKA Shit Happens.
You know the dance; Clear your cookies, Restart your computer, try a different browser or try again next week or don't.

it requested I change the password to login right after I created the account then codes didn't work they sent to reset it. That's not on my side. half baked

VERY interesting article.

Cloud saves are really the only feature I care about that isn't there. If I need to chat, I do it on discord anyways so Epic building a chat platform is a waste of time. I don't care about achievements either.

Good article, and was quite thorough, but I found it strange that they didn't list/mention Steam's VR support as another feature/capability of that particular platform as it is a differentiator. Granted the VR market is still small at under 1% of the gaming market, but with Steam's push this year further into that area with their own HMD hardware/controllers, and the fact that Steam is pretty much the only game hosting platform that openly embraces all of the PC VR players be it HTC, Oculus, and Windows MR, you would think that they would have at least mentioned it as well.

One thing they need to work on is the amount of spam accounts that are created. I login to my EGL about once a month. Just logged in and had 194 new friend requests. Going through and declining them all individually takes way, way too long.

Wow, good catch. I didn't even think about VR because I don't have any of the equipment but you are 100% right.

Steam and Sony are the only big players pushing VR to the consumers right now. Although I don't know if Sonys heart is still in it at this point.

Steam also does in home streaming via steam link. I know alot of people don't use it, but I do, and it is a big deal to me. It is really nice being able to play from bed, or the couch, or my desk, with either kbm or controller. It kind of makes me look at my consoles and think "why do I have you guys again?" lol.

VR support and Steam Link are 2 HUGE factors that weigh heavily on Steams side. I don't think the best chat program in the world can overcome them.

What Remains of Edith Finch is now free on the Epic Games Store (through January 25th)

I've been wanting to get this game for awhile now...almost bought it during the last Steam sale but glad I waited...

I already own all 3 games that have been offered. Can't complain about the quality of any of them so far as they are solid picks but I hope to eventually get something that I don't already own, heh.

I've already had several hacking attempts on my account from IPs in other countries and have read that this is happening a lot with Epic due to the massive popularity of Fortnite. Make sure you turn on 2FA if you haven't already.

Excited to play this. I played The Vanishing of Ethan Carter a couple years ago which looks similar and I enjoyed it.

I played them one after the other and Ethan Carter was a much longer game for me. I finished Edith Finch in 1 sitting. 2 hours of gameplay.

I finished playing What Remains of Edith Finch...what an amazing game...deserves all the high praise...very creative...didn't grab me right away but the stories kept getting better and better...the Lewis story was one of the most creative levels in any game...anyone who hasn't picked this up should definitely give it a try...it is pretty much a walking simulator but it's very well done...it's also short...I finished it in one sitting- 3 hours...I immediately replayed it

I'm bummed that I missed Subnautica, looks like a very fun game I didn't know about, the others I've grabbed so far at least

continuing the Epic Games Store feature of providing free games, Metroidvania title Axiom Verge is next up in line...free from February 7- 21...

Oh, they'd love to.

I'm all for free games, but I thought that this was an interesting article:

Great article, at first I thought to try out the Epic Launcher for some free games before dismissing it, but seeing as there is nothing else to it it seems like a waste of time, I already have Super Meat Boy on Steam anyway (and I played it for a while too). It put into perspective just how well done the blizzard launcher is with all of the cross-game promotions, achievements and other cool stuff. And Steam is also a great all-in-one platform with discussions, reviews, community posts, guides... Its just too convenient to pass up. I'll wait and see what how the epic launcher evolves

If someone is this desperate to sell me something I become extremely skeptical whether it's legit.

For me Epic wanting to grab more market shares in "digital game store" is enough of a valid reason as to why offer free less popular games. Once ppl have a few titles in it, they are more likely to grab new games from it if they didn't have any from before on the portal. Epic is prepared to sell low to gain more shares, with the huge success in Fortnite it's a pretty expected strategy, they can afford to do this without problem even if they have to pay the developers for it. All this strategy they are doing will just further strengthen their IP Unreal Engine which this all is about, to make it the platform of choice for Unreal Engine based games.

They also probably assume it will lead to more ingame lootboxes or however you want to call it sales with more customers in the portal so all in all it's nothing weird with this really, it actually makes a lot of sense if they want to try get another huge player in the digital game store business.

This is Epic, not some random company that just started up with no reputation or history. They're trying to compete with Steam which has almost held a monopoly in digital game distribution for the past 15 years. They're going up against the titan of the industry.

They're attempting to get people onto their EGS platform by building their game library for free. One of the main complaints from people not wanting to install another launcher is 'I already have a lot of games on Steam'; so why not to try and build their EGS library for free to help counter this complaint?

If tencent wasn't involved I might give them the benefit of the doubt. But with that and their poorly worded privacy statement, I'm holding off as long as it is feasible.

With the popularity of Fortnite and the millions of computers the EGS is now installed on worldwide I assume/hope various security organizations and users comb through the launcher to discover if there is any spyware or malware activity.

If you're worried about the information you actually provide them then I trust them just about as much as any US corporation like Google, Comcast, AT&T or Microsoft - I don't. But that doesn't mean I'm going to avoid their products or services. If you're on the grid then your information is already out there. It's unfortunate, but its the truth. Your ISP more than likely sells your data on the regular.

Anyway, back on topic. I just grabbed Jack Box last night and have been playing What Remains of Edith Finch. It's a pretty good game, but I liked The Vanishing of Ethan Carter more. Haven't heard of the next game that is coming, but I'll give it a shot.

I am pretty sure that the motivation of every launcher is to compete with Steam. However I will say that shortly we will hit a threshold the gaming community isn't comfortable with and everyone will be very outspoken about it. I mean I currently use Steam, GOG, Origin, Uplay, and something else I can't recall at the moment. I got a free game with the Epic launcher for something but I refuse to install it. Not installing ANOTHER launcher for games. At this point if a game I wan't isn't released on GOG, Origin, Uplay, or Steam then they don't get my business.

I must say, so far the free titles have been pretty good. I'll definitely add them to my library. I actually already had the Epic Launcher installed from UT awhile back, but I hadn't used it in a long time.

However, I don't see any reason to use this over Steam, if a game were to appear on both platforms. I know it gives developers more money or whatever, but Steam is far too feature-rich compared to this, at the moment.

I am the master of my domain.
5 launchers installed, none of them launch at startup.
such a silly goose is me

I'm not one to follow just because millions signed up already. People use twitter and instagram, and facebook too. I don't use either of those. At least not in the way they intended them to be used. Sometimes it's just fun to watch how their algorithms try to make sense of my unusual patterns. But I digress, none of the games they made free so far are enough of an incentive for me to sign up.

I never said a reason to follow was because millions of people already have it. I was simply implying that since millions of people have already downloaded it then there is a very good chance that any unsavory activities being performed by the launcher itself would've been detected by now.

Your points are fair, I was simply pointing out that in this day and age your information and data is about as private and secure as a glass house. Avoiding select/most services but still utilizing even one of them (such as the ISP itself) has already made your information vulnerable and is likely already being circulated between various organizations. Fighting to keep your data/information private is a battle you won't win unless you live completely off the grid.
