Rift on sale again

350 is a great price for this. I lucked out and got it for 300 during a Christmas sale.

If you know another rift owner you can get a further 10% off using a referral, drops it to $315.

Having both, I'd recommend spending the extra for an odyssey+, though.

This is apparently a permanent price drop, according to some Best Buy employees on Reddit.

I've read that from others, but I've also read that tracking for movement is worse on the Odyssey because it's an inside-out tracking system. Also, I'm a massive fan of the Rift controllers, and know nothing about the Odyssey controllers. What are your thoughts on those 2? I'm debating hopping on the VR train, but prices have been way too high for me to consider. With the rift having a drop to $350, I'm a little more interested. Hopefully I can find a used one for a little less.

I have both and head movement is the same tracking wise, but the Rift has better controllers. It's not the tracking that's really that much better, the Odyssey+ is surprisingly good controller tracking wise, it's the controller ergonomics and finger tracking. The WMR doesn't have the ability to detect your fingers like Touch, and they're not as comfortable or easy to use, and for certain movements I hit the tracking ring on my headset or body (like grabbing stuff in Onward) where it's not an issue with touch since the rings aren't placed 2-3" above your hands. That said, for me the visuals on the Odyssey+ more than make up for it. It's clearer, has massively reduced screen door, wider FOV and has less god-rays in the lenses. The rift is more comfortable, though the Odyssey+ is more breathable. Setup on the Odyssey+ is about 10x easier making it easy to take places or move rooms.

I play quite a bit of Onward which requires good tracking for aim and having to reach out of view of the headset for things, and I don't have an issue with the Odyssey+ tracking, just the aforementioned ergonomics stuff. Other games I play are even less critical tracking wise so it's mostly non-issue for me. I plugged the Rift in again recently and while it felt better on my face, I switched back after half an hour or so because I just couldn't see things as well. Both the image clarity and lost FOV were bothering me, the screen door less so.

All that said, they're both good and the Rift is a very good choice.

Thanks for the feedback! The controllers are the only sticking point for me. For long play sessions, I need something I can naturally hold for long periods of time. I've played with the Oculus Touch controllers at a demo that we had set up for a year at my previous job (lunch breaks were a blast back then). That, on top of a $150 price difference will probably push me towards the Rift. I can handle set-up being harder (i set up and tore down both our Oculus and Rift demos every time they decided to "re-market" our sales floor).

It's not a comfort issue, it's kind of hard to describe. They're just more natural. Comfort wise you can use either of them for hours on end, but the Touch are more a natural extension of your hands. Like I said, for me the improved display is much more important, but if you have experience with the Rift and liked it, that's a good choice.

Looking to jump back into the VR realm, sold my Vive about 6 months ago due to just not having the time to play it, also CS support was horrid and I do not want to deal with them again. Now looking at the rift over the odyssey+, mainly because the rift is more established and should have less issues. However, most reviews I have read are people who left the rift for the odyssey+ recently. Just looking into headphone options right now for both systems, I have my own set and really do not want to use the built in ones.

From what I read (bobzdar may be able to tell you better, since he owns both), both have the technical capability of using external headphones, but the Rift is much easier. On the Rift, you can easy take the integrated headphones off of the device with 2 minutes and a flathead screwdriver or the "Oculus tool" the device comes with. With the Odyssey+, they're built in, meaning you have to swivel them out of the way and try to position them in a way to not get in the way. Neither device has a 3.5mm jack built into the headset like the Vive does, so you're either going to be running another new cable, or using wireless headphones.

All of that said, the Odyssey+ does use AKG headphones, and reviews say they're no slouches. I've seen a couple of people actually replace the on ear pads with larger over-ear pads for a more traditional headphone feel.

EDIT: Here's an article on how to remove the Rift headphones, just so you can see how dead simple it is.

Unlike the Vive, the Rift’s built-in audio is actually quite good. Sure, you can remove them if you have your own cans which you’d prefer to use, but having to take a separate pair of cans on/off all the time in addition to taking the HMD itself on/off starts to become an annoyance fast. And if your cans aren’t wireless, then there’s the added hassle of yet another cable to contend with. I’d recommend trying the built-in audio solution first. Can’t speak to the Odyssey+, but the Rift’s built-in audio is quite good and gets no complaints from me.

They're both about the same sound quality wise. Not great, but not bad. They can both be rotated out of the way if you want other headphones - Rift can be removed completely but odyssey you'd have to cut wires. I haven't bothered, sound is good enough for me in games.
