Odd CSGO Problem. Anyone seen anything like this?

So,

While I was a Counter-Strike nut from like 1999-2005, I haven't played much since then, and only have a few hours in GO. I've had it installed, but haven't fired it up in probably at least two years.

My stepson asked me to play today, so I figured why not. I guessed I'd probably have to redo all my keyboard mappings and, mouse sensitivities, etc, but instead I've run into some sort of game breaking problem.

The game takes surprisingly long to start, I see a brief splash screen, then back to desktop, then the music starts playing, but nothing displays on screen. Sometimes I have to click, sometimes just wait, and a still version of the menu pops up, stays for a second and then disappears to desktop, then it continues this forever, staying on desktop for like 10 seconds, popping up a still screen for one second and then disappearing to desktop again, over and over. Even the menu is impossible to use. I cant even get to the settings screen to see if anything crazy is going on. See below:

Everything else on my machine seems to be running just fine, including several other games. I've googled the crap out of it, and while I find many people complaining of the game minimizing for one reason or another, no one's symptoms appear to match mine.

I tried checking the steam game files. It found one file that was problematic and redownloaded it, but the problem persists.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any suggestions?

Much appreciated.

Is there an ini/cfg file you can edit to make it windowed mode just temporarily??

SOLVED

I completely removed all config files, and deleted and reinstalled the game, and still the same problem.

I had 417.01 Nvidia drivers installed (late November 2018 release) so I tried installing the latest 417.35 drivers (Late December release) and that solved it.

Odd problem, but now everything works.

You'd think a 7 year old game would run with drivers that are just over a month old, but I guess not?

Maybe something changed when it went F2P?

Tried that new Danger Zone mode for like an hour....

Wackkkk.

(Btw Zara, I'm still running the Fallout 76 launch driver, and CS:GO installed/worked just fine)

Strange. Could be driber related that only affected specific hardware maybe? I know my Pascal Titan X isn't a super common GPU.

odds are it wasn't the game at all and something nvidia broke in the drivers it's self which is also probably why 417.01 drivers had a 7 day shelf life before nvidia replaced them which were then replaced 9 days later by the current 417.35 drivers..

At this point, I almost want a bad driver from Nvidia so I can go back to AMD feeling justified.

Zero driver issues are the ONLY thing keeping me on team green.

Well, their drivers have gotten demonstrably worse.

It seems to all have started with the 372.54 release which was buggy as hell. This also happened to be the first WDDM 2.1 release. I'm not quite sure why, but my take has been that drivers before 372.54 were generally pretty good, and drivers since then have been buggy as hell. Well, they have been better for the last several months, but still not as good as they used to be.

The reason I stay with Nvidia is the performance. I demand a MINIMUM of 4k 60fps at ultra setting sin new titles. My Pascal Titan X can barely handle this as it is (I was ready to upgrade to at a 2080ti before all the problems started) AMD on the other hand has nothing that comes even remotely close.

I like AMD more as a company and would rather give them my money, but I can't unless I get sufficient performance.
