Following last month’s report of an iPhone X blowing up after being upgraded to iOS 12.1 comes a new allegation against the newer, larger XS Max model: Ohio resident Josh Hillard claims his three-week-old device caught fire and “exploded” in his pants after he noticed a strange smell and burning sensation on his leg. Hillard is now exploring legal options against the company, as the Apple Store he visited wouldn’t give him a replacement on the spot, nor compensate him for his ruined clothing.

“Left no other option, I had to exit the room since there was a female in the break room with me and remove my pants. I ran to the boardroom where I got my shoes and pants off as fast as possible. A VP of our company put the fire out with a fire extinguisher because he heard me yelling. Once the phone was extinguished, I was left with a hole in my pants, fire extinguisher on my pants/shoes, and some pain/irritation in my buttocks region where the pocket of my pants was located.”

going by the xray images on ifixit, it's a good thing he didn't go for the mid-range option else it might have been hotter :)

Buttocks region? Meaning the idiot was sitting on his phone?

Well if it’s not in the TOS yet it will be soon, sitting on phone may bend and damage battery and will not be covered by warranty.

I joke but I don’t get the phone sitting thing.

Also I don’t care who’s in the room if my pants are on fire they’re coming off. Fight me HR.

Like I'm going to run out of a room to remove my pants when they are ON FIRE just because some chick is there. :sneaky:

Old school enough that I would have kept taking stuff off until the fire spewing thing was well away from me. From a legal standpoint, the more witnesses that saw the phone was really spaying fire while in the pants, the better.

Maybe thinner isn't always better?

So he was in a break room and it was in his back pocket. So in other words he was sitting on it and compromised the battery cell...

" .. and some pain/irritation in my buttocks region..." I get that feeling from Apple too!

Using back pockets for holding a phone is just asking for it - especially if they often tend to be 'tight fitting'. Now besides the pocket thing, this is why I don't bother with any of the newer feature phones, they are thin as hell with a battery that will happily turn into a bomb if violated (punctured, overheated, excessively bent, etc).

maybe the dude was playing pocket pool and rubbed the wrong thing? and It got too hot to handle? :p

This was my first thought too... You don't put phones in your back pocket! At the very least you will crack your screen, and if it really folds over then it would be no surprise that it could puncture the battery and cause a fire!

"...some pain/irritation in my buttocks region where the pocket of my pants was located."

And that's why you shouldn't set on your phone? This deserved attention, seriously?

It turns out the experience of maximum excess includes the sensation of your balls being on fire.

Lol ladies keep their phones on the back pocket

I know back pocket and all, but still... Wouldn't there be some mayor crunching, and cracking sounds before any fire? I mean if he sat on the phone and just crushed it... How butt dead do you need to be... A little bend is no reason for a fire in any phone, thats ridiculous.

Keeping a 1100$ device on back pocket? iPhone XS Max is a big device, so keeping it on right back pocket will definitely hurt the device.
