Oculus Rift Owners Thread

We need a ceiling guardian!

yeah would be nice to have 'height' based guardian... I managed to convince the wife to let me clear out the 'dining' area of our apartment, but she put in a storage bench and a mirror there now.. can reach over the bench no problem but I can also kick it/trip over it hah.. but don't really want to lose that 'reaching' space either.

by the way, after a few days the lens protectors seem fine now, maybe i'm just used to it or something but played a lot of Onward and Bridge Crew this weekend without noticing them. have an extra pack arriving today anyway.

anyone notice that tracking/performance in rift core 2.0 aka "oculus home 2.0" sucks..? had to switch back the old version...

I have an Oculus rift, I really enjoy using it but after a house remodel I don't know if I have room for it at the moment.

Flying around in DCS with a rift is pretty awesome tho.

When doing a house remodel, you should of built an extra room just for VR! :)

We did have an extra room built, I turned it into a projector room, unfortunately there's not enough room to accommodate VR after moving everything in.

The wife is taking over one of the extra rooms just for herself, she's making it her craft room/office.

Oh well......

LUCKILY mine loves Oculus (never liked games before) so that wont be a problem for me lol

I just had my HMD cable break near the headset strap. It looks to have worn through the plastic and the wire mesh.
It also must have broke a wire or something inside the plastic sleeve. Some of them are pretty thin.
I have had this not too long after it came out when my son gave it to me.
I ordered a new cord which was only $50. I hope it gets here soon but the cable just plugs in. Easy peasy!

Oh wow that sucks, ya thank God at least the cable is easy to replace lol

Picked up VorpiX today
Quite costly but definitely worth to have it
It can play some games in 3d and otherwise normal games on large desktop with 90fps as long as my PC can handle it.

Only issue is lower framerate than I would get playing on monitor in the case of games which are "flat".

Interestingly enough high resolution can improve image quality a lot. Mainly tested Doom (2016) and it looks visibly much better at 3840x2160 compared to 2560x1440.
90fps at 4K in modern games is a pipe dream, especially on RTX 2070 and overhead caused by VorpX and rendering scene in VR... wonder if adding second GPU would help off-load some work from main GPU and help run games faster...
Surprisingly ASW can be used in VorpX and works quite well making game appear like high frame-rate despite running at 45fps. I wonder why GPU manufacturers do not implement technology like this to supplement V-Sync...

VR mode is hit or miss. Tested Mirrors Edge (first one) and it works surprisingly well in full VR mode.
In other game, Borderlands game played much better in curved cinema mode in 3d. That way it adds ability to simulate head tracking without moving cursor and making guns look too weird looking. Same for Battlefield 3, games such as these play better in cinema mode and without any head tracking moving mouse.
3d effect need to be raised to 1.8 usually to make objects look natural sized.

I also like ability to change gamma to 0.91 to make native headset gamma to Rec.709 which is much better for games and especially movies.

In any way very nice piece of software and it works surprisingly well without major stability issues. Kinda make my gaming monitor less relevant...

Bioshock was really fun using Vorpx. I have not reinstalled it yet.

After seeing Vorpx mentioned here I Googled it and WOW, there are so many conflicting opinions on this one. The Reddit thread is an insane group of arguments about how its crap vs how it's amazing. I'm conflicted to try it.

If you like experimenting, solving problems and dont mind some issues its great.
If you want it to just work there is a lot of help online to get many things working ok, but you may need your reading glasses.

Most complaints from people are about the price and no "demo" version.

Personally I am very pleased with VorpX as it most importantly enables me to play games with native 90fps.
I started Fez to see if it works with it and it does. Runs great, super fluid and colors are awesome in Rift.

I have VorpX, bought it a couple of days after getting the Rift. This was back just after the Rift Launched. It was really hard to use back then, lots of configuration to make it work, and for some games, you still needed mods to make it right. Now it's so much simpler to use, in some games you can just use the Direct VR optimizer and it will do the work for you. There are more modes to choose from as well. It has immersive mode, for example, that's like playing on a huge 3D screen in front of you.

It works amazing well in some games, and if you are thinking of buying it, I would check out the VorpX forums and see if they games you want to try work well or not.

My recommendation to anyone that asks is this. If you are buying it just to see your favorite game in VR, don't bother. If the immersive mode with the 3D big screen is something you think you might like, then it might be worth considering. But, usually I just say to people who are thinking of buying it, save your money and put it towards some real VR games.

Can I explain why I don't like it? When I try a game in VorpX, I am always amazed by how good it looks. That feeling usually only lasts a few minutes when I start to notice how 'off' things are. Nothing is quite right. Some times it's big things that you can see right away, like the Big hands in some games. Others times it's little things that are immediately noticeable but build up over time, the scale is a little off, the movement is a little off. It all leads to a very jarring experience. YMMV with noticing all things though. If you are buying it expecting your pancake game to look and feel as good as game designed for VR, don't. It won't. Even the best VorpX game isn't as good as game designed for VR. If that's a limitation you are willing to live with then VorpX might be worth it for you.

Another good app to get for normal to vr conversion is the dolphin emulator, Wii games that used the wiimote aiming port incredibly well to vr. Metroid is a great example of it

When I was buying Rift I wondered about methods to force normal game to run 90fps v-synced on virtual big screen and this is exactly what VorpX does and does pretty well.

Are there any other solution of this kind that are maybe more universal? By universal I mean not limited to supported API's. Maybe some desktop displaying software is able to sync image perfectly if desktop monitor is set to 90Hz?

Got inateck pci-e usb3 card, the same Oculus recommended. It resolved every issues I had with USB connection which were plenty and very irritating, especially after connecting rd sensor. Didn't even try connecting 4th to integrated Intel's controller. Now everything is green with all 4. Oculus itself is connected to Intel but I will connect it to RTX card instead.
I also got VR Cover, it is very good. Now I practically do not feel headset on my face.
With 4 sensors and plenty space and ceiling lamp removed :)ROFLMAO:) now I only need to get proper extension cables to have proper VR gaming room

For the fun I got Rift DK2 to see how it compares and... boy oh boy does it have low resolution. Colors are also pretty not-awesome like on CV1 but quite inaccurate and dull. Blacks are better though, pretty much invisible. Smearing which kinda exist on CV1 also is ridiculous on DK2 and it also visibly flickers. CV1 have more godrays, though still very much superior image quality. FOV seems lower on DK2. At first DK2 seemed more comfortable but after very short time I changed my mind, it is not. Also built-in headphones are a must on VR because not having them is very bothersome. Biggest issue with DK2 is lack of touch controllers support. Though even with Vorpix games resolution seems so low it is very bothersome. Spaces between pixels (screen door) takes more space than than actual pixels :dead: BTW. I got it because it was pretty cheap. I can also get DK1, even cheaper... not sure if I want it though. DK2 is at least somewhat usable.

I got HDMI 2.0 extension cable, mere 1.5m and it doesn't even work. Goddamit

Status update: I bought Oculus Rift DK1

So now I will have DK1, DK2 and CV1. Hopefully CV2 "sooner than later" ;)

I use a vive live box as its powered and then I can use a 15' hdmi extension cord. Without that i could not even use a 6' hdmi extension cord without a black screen.

Use active 15' usb 3.0 extensions as well.

I still have my dk1 but haven't figured out a use for it...

I finally did the Oculus survey they sent however long ago and when I got to the part where they asked me if I knew about the Rift S I said yes I was aware of it the next question was if I planned to buy one and I said no. The survey ended and I never got to tell them it was because they didn't add a damn thing of interest to it and I don't wanna pay for a sidegrade.

that's probably why they didn't call it "Rift 2", they understand it's not a big enough upgrade
