Have been having a bit of fun here, just building a simple Threadripper box for my new personal workstation. Will be upgrading cooling in a bit. Have not really done any tweaking at all yet. Spent the morning getting all my normal workflow moved over to the new box. Have not touched stock fan profiles either.

What took you so long to join us in Ryzenland, Kyle? Even I took your dare to "Man Up and Just Do It!" during the Ryzen pre-launch (in which I got my Ryzen R7 1700 rig)... No regrets.

The bottom card looks like the MSI Aero M.2 PCIe riser card.
Yep. Got a single 500GB in it now, two more 1TB NVME should be here tomorrow with a couple of new spinners.

with a pair of PCIe cables attached to it?
It has a 6pin PCIe on it, I guess for the fan. The cables on this PSU are not very adaptable, need to do some custom work.

Been waiting for my moment to jump. Going to go run some laps through Hunt Showdown and see how it feels.

The MSI Seahawk RTX 2080 looks pretty sturdy too. Never heard it play Hunt.

Max temp leveled off at 74C at 451 seconds into the round. Card was already heatsoaked before starting, but did have some idle time and cooled off quickly.

With all those cooling lines in there, it reminds me of when Neo woke up in the Matrix and started pulling all those cords out of himself.

That M.2 riser card looks interesting.

Looks like best Hand OC is going to hammer out to around 2040MHz on the GPU.

Not as exciting, but 7000MHz to 8000MHz is very nice.

So ended up with north of 2GHz on GPU and 8000MHz on VRAM.

And this is inside a case with a Threadripper 2950X as well.

with a pair of PCIe cables attached to it?
Yes. Some people say that this is due to PCIe power limits.
PEG slot is specified to 75 W max.
M.2 is specified to 25 W.

So fully loading the 4 M.2 sockets + the fan would exceed PCIe limits. MSI could of course have used a Molex connector or something, but a 6-pin PCIe connector is fine too.

I just pulled the card out and put two new drives in it and took the heatsink and fan off. The fan was too loud anyway. I seriously doubt those will get too hot there anyway.

Changed cases this evening...needed more airflow under the desk. Have not figured out how to ditch the RGB yet....

Hi Kyle,

What mouse are you using on this machine. Looks pretty cool!

Finally got this Thermaltake GT 20 dialed in. I specifically bought it for the two 200mm fans up front. I looked high and low for a bottom intake case like my old Silverstone that had two 180mm intakes at the bottom that turns the motherboard 90 degrees so the IO panels are on top. Nothing like that and support for two rads of any size. The case has great airflow.

Using the MSI Sea Hawk for game testing, I was getting 24C air temp at the 24-pin connector on the board, with 34C intake right in front of the Sea Hawk AIO, with 47C exhaust under full load of 2070MHz. The 39C you see in the Flir below is the back wall that the Sea Hawk AIO is exhausting directly into.

Still have a bit of cable managment to do, but I will likely be going full custom loop here in the future so I am not too worried about it. On the MSI Xpander-Aero 4-way M.2 to PCIe card, I pulled the huge heatsink and fan. It simply was too loud with a high pitched tone. I think the card is a bit of overkill anyway.

One thing that did put me off is that this case is spec'd for EATX boards, but when using those, you almost totally cover the cable pass-throughs. If I wanted to use the 360 rad mount that exhausts out the side, I would have to get a custom made 24-pin cable to fit through the pass-through.

The back buttoned up fairly well with not a lot of effort. Still could do a lot better job here if I took some time. That Thermaltake fan controller, that you have to use if you want to go with all white (or whatever color, or no color) lights, has a lot of wiring attached to it and requires a Molex pinned lead as well.

IMG_20181223_140147.jpg

I still have the plastic covering on the panels on the sides as well. Still not done taking those on and off yet.

IMG_20181223_142032.jpg

One design element of the case, I looked at incorrectly when buying it. The USB "front" connections come out of the side, so I have to pull the case out a bit more from under the desk than I would like, but this does give the Sea Hawk AIO a bit more room to breath in the back. Also, the orientation of the USB ports does not allow me to use my flash card stick for pulling video off cameras. I bought another that allows me to use it.

IMG_20181223_140237.jpg IMG_20181221_161422.jpg

There were a few issues with the case. It seems at the factory, the top glass panel was torqued too tightly on one corner, and it broke the mount around the threaded insert. Got with Thermaltake support, they are sending a new top panel, which is super easy to change as it just snaps off. Also, one of the 200mm fan connectors was covered in some sort of graphite-ish grease that made a mess, but cleaned up surprising easily.

Overall, my primary concern was getting cool air into the case, which the GT 20 seems to accomplish in spades! A few hoops to jump through, but nothing that you can't work out with a bit of planning changes or a dremel tool. (Did not want to start cutting yet in case I wanted to return it to Microcenter.)

As for drives, I ended up using sixe NVME drives. Three down on the X399 Creation and three down on the MSI Xpander card. I put in two 4TB spinners that are mirrored for archive local backup.

It looks like it shares a similar design root with the F51 Suppressor I picked up not long ago, except I wanted the drive cages + a place for optical BR burner. Mostly happy with it, except no PSU shroud available so I might have to make something with plexi later.

I love my 2950x and my 2600x and my 200ge

They all have thier merits. 2950x sucks on power but is a monster CPU.

2600x is a wonderful gaming and general use CPU and very capable as a main use desktop chip with some compute power in a small package.

200ge .. 2 actually fast cores but super low cache and locked clocks. Makes an absolute monster pfsense routing processor. I have my pfsense machine idling at 38 watts avg. The whole machine. And its passively cooled using the 2600x heatsink slapped on top.

So I'm glad Kyle is digging his 2950x and I know exactly why.

I doubt he would have any issues with it this early on. As well that is the revised version made after Enermax got bombarded with hundreds of RMAs due to failing coolers.

Thats a very nice build. Any issues with that Enermax AIO?
This is my second one. I have another that has been in a system for over a year now. I am going to put the 360 version in the build however and two it out for a while for comparison. Can't hit TDP with the 240.

He should be able to turn off or control the RGB effects. Taking wire cutters to it is probably not necessary.

yea I really hate all this RGB shit that alot of the PC components have today. I personally like very little light in my case.....Shit I just turned 40 I think im just old and cranky now at all this new aged shit laugh.
