43" 4K 60hz vs 27~32" 1440p G-sync 165hz?

I already own this monitor, a 4K LG 43ud79-B - a great 43" computer monitor with 4K (minus color). Specs are here:

However, I mainly play FPS games (focusing on using BFV as the standard), and am wondering if I would see more benefit from a 27~32" Gsync monitor? I'm looking at something around $500-$800 USD. Winner so far looks like this LG 32GK850G:

Would I miss the larger display? I had a 1600P 30 inch and the size increase was nice with 4K, but I've never gamed on a g-sync setup before and not sure how much more noticeable a higher refresh rate would feel. I generally want a better gaming experience, and I want better colors (I'm not impressed with my current solution).

Also, if someone has a better Gsync recommendation in that price range with 27~32 inches, LMK.

Or let's say F' it and just keep both, and just switch when I need a change of pace!

You'll definitely notice the difference in FPS. As far as Gsync goes, it's nothing too game changer if you're rig can pull the monitors refresh rate. You'll mainly see the benefit due to higher FPS. If you don't mind color accuracy save yourself some cash and get the Dell TN Gsync 144hz monitor.

Thanks for the feedback. I do occasionally do photoshop (I'm talking very occasionally - game on the system more), so I would rather have the better color accuracy. As for Gsync, is SLI and Gsync still an issue? I remember reading a while back that was a thing, and since I do have SLI 1080 TI, that would be a limiting factor.

Not that I've noticed. I'm running 1080tis sli as well with Gsync working fine. In that case the two monitors I would suggest looking into is the Asus pg279q and dells UW 1440p 120hz monitor (you can get these at a steal of $700-800)

I found a Asus pg279q local for $650 at Fry's, but was hesitant on getting it since the design was a few years older. Apparently the reviews I keep reading for it, even in 2018, recommend this bad boy. Looks like I may have found the winner. Thanks for the help. Anything I should be aware of?

If you're buying second hand spend no more than $500, they drop in price around $600, $500 at times. eBay always has monthly coupons taking up to 10 percent off anything. Wait for that is my suggestion.

Have you heard anything on the PG279QZ? It's apparently with an IPS panel, same specs, and it's only $599. I may just take a chance and do the review myself, as that's a much better price.

Yeah, the website even shows identical specs and marketing. There's probably some minuscule difference internally to make it more cost-effective. I decided to go with the original version. Ordered it off Fry's, and picking it up from the store when I wake up at 1pm hahaha. I figured this was the best route, as I've never gamed on a higher refresh monitor and if I decide to take it back, there's no restocking fee and 30 day returns. Seemed like the best option. I did the exact thing when I tried an ultra-wide. Took it back a week later because the experience was not to my liking.

I mean.. a lot of games are locked to 30 or 60. Even on pc.... and then there are consoles. Playing God of War is the better, the bigger the screen is + 4k.
I would say - for a single player gamer, 60fps is just fine. Even 30 is fine really with controller. But for competitive play? nah, go high refresh rate. Ofc there are screens which can do both but they cost a kidney

Early adopter posts on reddit show that the panel is likely a refresh to improve quality control. The original was plagued with issues that this one supposedly corrects. Might want to consider going with the new panel if you have issues with the panel from Frys.

I used to belong to the "why not both?" camp. Was running a 4K 55" Samsung originally, then purchased an alienware 25" Gsync at 240Hz because I was doing some FPS gaming. I got pulled into the high refresh because of how crisp everything looked when everything was moving while gaming on my Alienware 17 which has a 120Hz screen.

I actually packed up the 240Hz screen after I stopped playing Destiny 2 competitive PvP stuff and went back to enjoying the big screen. It's for a couple of reasons. When running 4K on the 2080ti, I get more resolution so, when that 4K is running at a perfect 60fps, I still get that crispyness in movement. Also, I enjoy a mix of different content beyond gaming, so I missed having a big screen to watch movies on, etc.

I guess, my opinion is it depends on how much of what you do with your screen. If you only use the computer for FPS gaming and play competitively, then without a doubt do get a high refresh screen. But if you have a decent GPU that can drive 4K smoothly, and enjoy a variety of content, movies, TVs, etc. along with gaming then stick with the big screen. https://hardforum.com/posts/1043991175/

I was in the same boat. Was using a 43" 4k TV as a monitor. The size was fun but not really practical for me. I died more often in game and desktop use I was too close to the big screen.

Got a steal on an LG 32" 1440p 144hz over black Friday and I love it. The difference between 60 and 144 is quite large and worth it.

For me 32" is the sweet spot. I previously had a 27" IPS who was nice but I wouldn't want to go back to that size.

I'm looking at buying one of those as well. Newegg had it at $530 after Thanksgiving and Amazon had it at $486 about a week before that, so I'm (somewhat) patiently waiting for it to drop into the low-$500s again.

I bit the bullet on the 32GK850G. Hope to unpack it tonight. After being on IPS screens forever, I pray it lives up to the hype. With my luck, the 30"+ 144Hz 4k will be announced tomorrow.

I have a Sony 43x720e and an Acer XB271HU, I've swapped between these over the last 12 months, I really like the 4k and 43inch size, very immersive and the picture quality on the Sony is better than the Acer. But 60hz is a detriment if you play online competitively, I notice a big drop in KD ratio and my ability to track targets using the larger 4k screen, the 144hz Gsync is amazing for online gaming. I also use consoles on this display so again the Sony wins out here again, it's really just online shooters where I find the 144hz beneficial, but I play many other games that are designed around 30/60hz.

It's just a shame we have no large 4k 144hz options out there. I have been looking at the 32 LG but I've used IPS for so long now, I don't know if the VA smearing will annoy me. It will be interesting to see how you find it coming from the 43" LG.

Well, today I bit the bullet and got the Asus PG279Q.

Pros:
Holy hell, 165hz gaming is butter smooth!! Its like going from a traditional hard drive to an SSD for the first time. I can't believe I've been missing out on this. Gaming is just much more responsive; heck, I can see the difference scrolling with a web browser. Setting up the 165 overclock was pretty easy.

The colors compared to the LG 43UD79-B seem much richer. Had to do a little tweaking (and may need to do more if I decide to keep the monitor, which I'll get to).

Neutral:
It's only 2K. The extra screen real estate was nice on the 4K, but 2K at this size screen looks very clean.

Cons:
This monitor is so much smaller than my 43 inch. It's a big difference. Very occasionally I liked getting on Netflix/Hulu while in bed, and this is going to be a big adjustment since the viewing angles are not as good as the 43". The fix is just to get off my ass and go on the couch, and watch on the 65".

Backlight bleed. Damn, is this thing bad in the upper right-hand corner. It's really only noticeable on black screens, but when its there, you can see it (attached picture for reference). If I flex the bezel a bit, it goes away, so I'm wondering if its something that I can fix. This may be the deciding factor if I'm going to keep it or not.



Overall, I'm ecstatic about 165hz. I'm going to play around with it for a few days, switch back to the 4K, see which gives a better experience, then go from there. Thanks everyone for all the help. And hopefully this post helps someone else out with a similar dilemma.

Judging by the usual posts out there I must have won the "AUO AHVA Lottery" twice because my pg279q and nixeus are both great: no pixel problems, no BLB and the minimal background glow is even without edge flares. Buttery smoothness is great, the nix having similar overdrive control to standard gsync is nice, really should have put that in the FS2 spec.

With both bought during recent deals the Gsync vs Freesync tax is about $150, although the asus does have a decidedly nicer adjustable stand vs the nix "premium" and feels more solid overall.

Yeah, 166Hz was a game changer for me, after playing at 4K60 for a while. I don't think I can go back for PC games (I still use the 4K TV for PS4 Pro, and that's acceptable).
