Obscure games that you loved

I actually was going to joke how that sounds like a porno, but... sounds like I I would've been pretty damn close to being right! lmao

My life is complete.

Lastly,
Motor City Online - Made by EA and was technically a Need for Speed MMO long before the NFS - World MMO came to be... was not modern at all, it was retro... it was muscle cars and street rods!! It wasn't a traditional MMO though, where you run around. It was more of a big chatroom game hub, themed around a Car Hop drive in restaurant, where you'd find people to race on a certain track. Thing is, this wasn't just racing... It was like an RPG of sorts where you BUILT your car up similar to Gran Turismo. You'd start with like $3000, then have to buy a junker starter car. Really wouldn't have enough money to upgrade so, you'd hit the drag strip and cut your teeth. Win some races, earn some money, now you could hit up the parts store. However, there was also an "eBay" in the game (like WoW's auction house) to buy and sell higher end parts. You could customize your car with whatever engine you wanted, too, didn't matter. Wanted a Ford Y-Block in a damn AMC AMX? Do it! Put a MoPAR 440 in an old 32 Ford Coupe. And it used real brand names, with real parts, and real vehicles from the 70s and earlier. Weiand Superchargers, Holley carburetors, Hooker Headers, Offenhauser Intakes, AMC Javelin, Dodge Charger, Chevy Impala! It was a simple game... but for people who loved vintage automotives, racing, and turning wrenches... It was epic! It died long ago, but thanks to that recent law to let people revive old abandoned games that required servers, I heard fans were trying to revive it with a community server.

Thanks for this thread. It was a good trip down memory lane for me. :)

I miss MCO so much.

That is a game, if any, that they should bring back. It was the best.

What's a shame is that game would be nearly perfect for smart phones these days.

After MCO had its "sunset" I got into Earth & Beyond. It too was pretty darn good. You can actually still play it. Some people have some servers up, but it just isn't the same without all of the people.

Syndicate. loved it

My favorite fighting game of all time was Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side on the Sega CD.
It was pretty obscure (like most Sega CD games), and most people don't realize that it was an actual sequel to Eternal Champions and not a remake or "champion edition" style upgrade.
I put in a scary amount of time figuring out how to do all of the stage kills and how to unlock all of the hidden characters. I had touch of death combos down pat with half the cast.

I got a chance to play it again last year and I still surprisingly remember how to play pretty well.

You own a copy? That's awesome.

I rented it on Genesis at least 4-5 times.

I watched a youtube video of it recently and apparently the CD version has wayyyyyy more gore..

My parents gave away all of my games to a friend of mine who collects old systems. He still has my old copy and my Sega CD for that matter.
The CD version has more gore, 2x as many characters, real combos (chains, buffers, and juggles), multiple fatalities, and its just a better game all the way around. The Genesis one was basically all about just fundamentals and bait/counter moves. This one added a pretty nice combo system and a lot more moves for each character.
It still holds up pretty well. Better than most fighting games from that era. We played it for an hour or two before my buddy conceded that I remember way more about how to play it than he did.

There was supposed to be a 3rd game released for the Saturn, but it got shelved when Sega shifted the development team to other projects. One of the devs posted that they never got very far before it was halted.

No One Can Stop Mr. Domino

I'm the master of weird PS1 games but this one is a real gem!

You basically line up dominoes ala Domino Rally, which then set off events like Mouse Trap.

Tale of the Sun

This one was wayyyy ahead of it's time.

You were a caveman and slowly gathered Mammoth bones to build...... a "tail" to reach the Sun.

Skullmonkeys on the PS1 was a weird one

Tokyo jungle is another one where you play as animals in a post apocalyptic world and try to make your way up the animal kingdom

I had soooo much fun playing MCO. It really was a gem of its time that was overlooked by many.

I played a ton of what is mentioned, especially the old pc games that I grew up on. Here is one of my favorites from 1997.

These games were so cool! I wasn't into the tank(ish) controls, so I watched my brother play these instead. :D Very entertaining. Love the rabbit lady that says "Stop doing that, you're going to get ashes everywhere!!" when you mess around in her fireplace. :D

I'm dating myself here, but I really liked Chasm: the Rift.....a fairly forgotten Doom/Quake clone.

Stratosphere: Conquest of the Skies. Would love an up to date recreation.. One of my comments on the game was used in an advertisement :)

Ha! Forgot all about this game. I did some of the hardware compatibility testing for it. I had a lot of fun with it.

Does "Master of Monsters" count as obscure, or just forgotten? I was obsessed with that game for a long time.

Turns out, after taking to Battle for Wesnoth much later on, I find out Wesnoth took most of its inspiration from MoM. Not surprising.

WTF? That game is called Little Big Adventure.

That could be based on locale. Like Another World and Out of this World.

I had the original Delphine releases, and do remember Little Big Adventure being part of at least one of the titles. There was Twinsen's Odyssey and Twinsen's Adventure.

Was my first online multiplayer experience, addon maps and painting your car, and the cd could be played like a music disc in a cd player.

Someone mentioned Motor City Online, I got to do the beta test but was unable to play the game when it came out and when I was finally able to play the game, they announced the end of its servers.

I remember seeing that game at a local music/video store back when they used to rent out PC games. Never tried it but I remember it being one of the first non-sprite-based FPS games I'd ever seen.

I mentioned MCO, and was also in the Beta :D Sorry to hear you didn't get to play it after that though. Twas genuinely a fun game.

hah I didn't know there was an Interstate '82. I knew of '76 from my PC Gamer subscription, also having played the demo of it since they came with Demo CDs (bet I still have a few kicking around somewhere lol)

Most games that came on CDs back in the day, which had game music that needed the CD, were CD-Audio and playable that way. I believe Quake 1 was the game that I personally discovered this with. Which only the first track was really musical and worth listening to. (While I'm biased, as I love NIN, I still say Reznor knocked the sounds and ambient music out of the park for Q1, so I was sad that it didn't pan out with Doom 3 since I felt the leaked demo with Reznor's preliminary work sounded better than the final game)

Quake 2 and one of the two Mission Packs were also playable, and I liked listening to the Quake 2 CD. That, the one Mission Pack that worked, and Quake 3's music were by Sonic Mayhem (Q3 in part, someone else made the other half). I think my HDD that had those all ripped and part of my music library went tits-up though... or is IDE and potentially one of the few I didn't bother checking what was on it with my SATA-IDE adapter. Kinda miss those tunes, now that I wax nostalgic about it! lol (FYI the Q3 music wasn't CD-Audio, they were audio files stored in the .pk3 archives since there were so many tracks)

Die By the Sword
Hunter Hunted
Deadlock
RUNE
Betrayal and Krondor
Shadow of Yserbius
Fate of Twinion
Soldier of Fortune

I remember buying this game a while back thinking I'd check it out. Somehow 3 hours instantly disappeared. A really great game

I watched a few gameplay vids of this a while back..

The moment I realized what I was looking at:
